Latvia will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 and will select their entry through a national selection, consisting of a web selection, two semi-finals and a final, organised by the Latvian broadcaster LTV.

Eirodziesma 2012

LTV officially opened the submissions period for their national selection Eirodziesma on 1 September 2011. Artists could send up to two songs until 14 October 2011. On 15 October, it was announced that LTV had received a total of 71 songs.[1]

The selection will feature a number of changes in its 2012 running. An internet voting window will take place from 20 October-1 November 2011 on their website, where the names of the performers will not be visible. According to LTV, this is to prevent the public from focusing on the names behind the entries too much.[2]

The final decision will lie in the hands of a seven-member panel which will decide upon the 20 entries to qualify for the semi-finals. The entries and authors will be revealed at a press conference on 8 November 2011, while the performers will be announced on 1 December 2011. The singers will then undergo a live audition, where they will be assessed by the panel. The experts reserve the right to either approve or reject the proposals.[3]

The televised stage of Eirodziesma will consist of two semi-finals, to be aired on 7 and 14 January 2012, featuring 10 songs each. Five songs from each show will proceed to the final, being selected through public voting and televoting at a 50/50 split. The same voting rule will apply in the final, scheduled for 18 February 2012 in Ventspils.[4]
