Ivanhoe East is an affluent residential suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 10 km north-east from Melbourne's central business district. Its Local Government Area is the City of Banyule. In the 12 month period to November 2010 Ivanhoe East reported a median house price of A$1.4 million[3] and based on the 2006 Census, had a population of 3,784.

History

Ivanhoe East Post Office opened on 1 November 1939.[4]

Today

Lower Heidelberg Road is considered to be the suburb's centre, which hosts a strip of retail stores. Although only a small area, Ivanhoe East has its own church, newsagent, fruit store, butcher, milkbar, supermarket, bakery and community bank. It also boasts a range of specialty stores such as Austral piano world [1] and "So Swish" a locally renowned gift shop [2].

Two primary schools are located in the Ivanhoe East area: Ivanhoe East Primary School (a.k.a. I.E.P.S.), a public school, and Mother Of God Primary School(a.k.a. MOG), a Catholic school. The two schools are located side-by-side on Wilfred Road, just south of Lower Heidelberg Road.

Data - Ivanhoe East is the most tightly held residential housing market in Australia, with residents holding on to their properties for an average of 16 years, compared with overall greater Melbourne and Sydney hold periods of 9.6 years and 8 years respectively.
