Escape the Night is an American reality television series created, hosted, produced, and owned by Joey Graceffa that was first broadcast on June 22, 2016, on YouTube Premium.[1][2] The series follows fantasy plots based on horror and murder mystery aesthetics. The fourth season was released on July 11, 2019.[3] The series was produced by Brian Graden Media.[4] As of September 4, 2019, 40 episodes of Escape the Night have aired, including seven specials, concluding the fourth season. It was the longest-running series on YouTube Premium until 2020, when Graceffa announced that he would be selling the series to a different network for its fifth season.[5][6] On November 2, 2023 official Escape the Night social medias and Graceffa announced “Escape The Night: The Movie” to be funded.

Premise

The series follows The Savant (Joey Graceffa) as he finds himself in an estate in a past era, where he invites a number of guests to a party and requires them to act and dress as various personas from that era. Once there, they are isolated from the outside world, and tasked with surviving the night and escaping the estate. To achieve this, the guests team up with him to participate in challenges and escape room puzzles, competing with each other to escape from the historical era by solving and completing the challenges. At the end of each episode, two guests are voted into a challenge to compete against each other, where the losing guest is eliminated via a fictional death until one or more guests ultimately win and are sent back to the modern world.

Production

Conception

When YouTube Premium launched in October 2015, Graceffa's show was one of ten exclusive original series scheduled to debut in 2016, and was still an untitled project.[7][8] The series was set to be produced by Brian Graden Media, and began filming in a house near Valencia, California.[4][9] Graceffa said that the show was inspired by an episode of television show Lizzie McGuire themed around a murder mystery, and was also closely related to the 1985 film Clue.[10][9] Graden called the show "a hybrid between scripted mystery and reality elimination show".[4]

Distribution

The series debuted on June 22, 2016, with two episodes going live.[11] The premiere episode had 11.3 million views and 1.1 billion social impressions.[12] The show was renewed for a second season in October 2016, and was scheduled to debut on June 22, 2017.[13][14] In May 2018, Graceffa confirmed there would be a third season, which debuted on June 21, 2018.[15][16] The fourth season, which made it the longest running original series on YouTube, premiered on July 11, 2019.[3] The first episode of season 4 premiered simultaneously at VidCon during a panel conference with Graceffa, and was also available to watch for free on YouTube.[17]

Escape the Night: Escape Room

The Escape the Night: Escape Room was an immersive escape room centered around the fourth season of Escape the Night. The escape room was a limited event exclusively in Beverly Hills, California, that ran from August 9, 2019, to August 27, 2019. The escape room had multiple rooms to venture through, with surprise guest appearances from Graceffa, Jack O'Connor (Mortimer), and Eva Augustina Sinotte (The Sorceress).[18]

Board game

In June 2020, Graceffa announced via vlog that due to COVID-19's impact on Hollywood and television, Season 5 was postponed indefinitely, but teased a new interactive fan version. Fans of the show signed up to an email list in order to receive updates about the new project.[19][20] In July 2020, a Kickstarter campaign was started to fund a board game based on the series; its goal of $30,000 was achieved in just 3 hours. It was formally announced the next day.[21]

End on YouTube Premium, possible fifth season, and potential spinoff

In June 2020, it was confirmed that YouTube Premium had declined to renew the show for a fifth season, possibly canceling its longest running original series.[5][6] In June 2021, Graceffa stated in a vlog that YouTube will no longer fund and distribute further seasons of the series, but has stated that he has full ownership of the intellectual property, and is currently pitching the series for another season under a different network, and developing a potential spinoff.[22] In October 2023, Graceffa released a teaser for a potential fifth season or a project on the newly rebranded Escape The Night social media platforms.[23] In November 2023, Graceffa announced a movie for Escape The Night along with a promotional trailer.

A spy is caught, but Joey and his friends learn that the real treachery is among them. They also learn the location of the next artifact, but at a cost.

Challenge: After a rigged vote caused it impossible for Teala to be voted in, Nikita and Roi were forced to join after failing a different challenge. They have to complete separate mosaics with snake innards.

Died: Roi Fabito was poisoned and bitten by the Snake Woman.

A dead body is tossed from the balcony, giving a clue about the third artifact. The YouTubers form two hunting parties, but the team that fails to recover the missing pieces must face off against the Man with No Name.

Challenge: Teala Dunn and Rosanna Pansino were voted into the challenge where they had to use tiles hidden in the smoke to spell out a monster's name without the monster catching them outside of the circle.

Died: Teala Dunn was strangled and gassed by the Man With No Name.

A strong man is in town and the YouTubers must prove who amongst them is strongest. Joey reveals the dark secret he’s desperately been trying to keep. As his friends turn on him, they must also try to claim the fourth artefact.

Challenge: Manny Mua and Matthew Patrick were voted to take part in strong man competition against each other in front of everyone else.

Died: Matthew Patrick was beaten to death by the Strong Man.
266"Twin Dolls"July 18, 2018 (2018-07-18)

The doll maker’s puppets come to life, chasing Joey and his friends. The only way the YouTubers can cleanse the new artifact is by uncovering the mysterious Maiden of Madness and locking someone inside her.

Challenge: To vote and then personally sacrifice one of their friends in the Maiden of Madness.

Died: Colleen Ballinger was trapped inside the Maiden of Madness and then impaled by the other guests.
277"Funhouse"July 25, 2018 (2018-07-25)

The Funhouse is open for business. Bloody business. The YouTubers must survive its twisted rooms. Just when they think they’ve mastered all its tricks, the Funhouse has one final twist that leaves them all turning on each other.

Challenge: Whichever two people, Rosanna Pansino and Safiya Nygaard, escaped the funhouse had to vote for two people to be locked in a death battle. They voted for Manny Mua and Nikita Dragun respectively, who were then informed. However, a rule unbeknownst to anyone was in fact whoever voted for the winner in the round would be killed instead.

Died: Safiya Nygaard was stabbed and gutted by Willie's fishhook.

Revived: Matthew Patrick was revived by Joey Graceffa and Safiya Nygaard using the Harp of Lazarus.
288"Wicked Witches"August 1, 2018 (2018-08-01)

The Wicked Witches have been cursing the people of Everlock, and the YouTubers are next. The remaining few must quickly undo the curses in order to cleanse the seventh artifact… or so they think.

Challenge: Everyone who was cursed during the episode had to take part in timed course involving climbing, downing drinks, puzzles more, with whoever finished last to be killed.

Died: Rosanna Pansino was stabbed by three witches on an alter.
299"Control Issues"August 8, 2018 (2018-08-08)

The Carnival Master’s daughter turns one YouTuber against the others. As friends fight friends, the daughter’s flesh-eating pet demon must be slain if the YouTubers want to cleanse the final artifact.

Challenge: Nikita Dragun and Manny Mua were voted into a challenge where they had to burst balloons whilst in straightjackets, eight of which contains keys to open boxes one of which contains instructions for a winner. Unbeknownst to either, the correct box contained a gun instructing the winner to shoot the other or themselves.

Died: Manny Mua was shot six times by Nikita Dragun.
3010"The Carnival Master"August 15, 2018 (2018-08-15)

The YouTubers make their way into the Carnival Master’s lair only to find things are not as they once thought. With the undead chasing them, Joey and the last two survivors race across town facing their final challenges before sunrise.

His mission takes a dark turn when he discovers there’s no way home. The group learns they must recover nine Jeweled Keys to open the Collector’s mysterious vault if they have any hope of survival.

A pharaoh is wrongfully murdered and awakened from the dead by the YouTubers. They must find his killer and venture into the Sands of Egypt if they want to recover the first Jeweled Key.

Challenge: Tana Mongeau and Justine Ezarik were voted to take part in a challenge where they needed to get a sceptre to control a mummy.

Died: Justine Ezarik was strangled whilst fighting a mummy after convincing Tana Mongeau to sacrifice her.
333"A Deal With a Demon"July 17, 2019 (2019-07-17)

The YouTubers enter the Indian exhibit and face off against the bird man of legend, Garuda. He traded his soul for gold and soon the YouTubers will do the same. They are forced to make a deal with a demon goddess if they want to claim the next key.

Challenge: Timothy DeLaGhetto and DeStorm Powers were voted to take part in the Gem Offering Challenge where they had to find jewels hidden around the Indian Exhibit.

Died: Timothy DeLaGhetto was beaten to death by Garuda after DeStorm sabotaged him.
344"A Wedding to Die For"July 24, 2019 (2019-07-24)

The Emperor of China needs an heir and a wife or the rebels will invade. The ladies are recruited to play dating games in hopes of becoming his “wife” and the men must escape the bonds of the dragon rebellion and uncover an ancient spear if they want to live.

Challenge: Alex Wassabi and DeStorm Powers were voted to play a game of human chess against one another.

Died: DeStorm Powers was stabbed by the Emperor's sword after sacrificing himself to save Alex Wassabi.
355"Dark Magic and a Twisted Fate"July 31, 2019 (2019-07-31)

Camelot has fallen to the Black Knight and the YouTubers must reclaim Excalibur if they want the next key. They recruit Merlin to uncover the secrets of Standing Stone and crown one of them King of Britannia.

Challenge: Tana Mongeau and Gabbie Hanna were voted to take part in the Knights Of Camelot challenge, in which they had to complete four geometry puzzles and drink a protection potion, with both being able to live. The protective circle would only last for five minutes.

Died: Tana Mongeau and Gabbie Hanna were impaled on a lance after both failing the four challenges, leading to Colleen Ballinger taking over and completing it.
366"The Maze of Terror"August 7, 2019 (2019-08-07)

The Gorgon returns to the museum and turns one member of the group to stone. The others enter the Minotaur’s maze to uncover an ancient artifact needed to claim the next key.

Challenge: Alex Wassabi and Colleen Ballinger were voted to take part in the maze challenge where they had to construct a statue of the Parthenon first.

Died: Colleen Ballinger was bludgeoned to death by the minotaur.
377"Be Careful What You Wish For"August 14, 2019 (2019-08-14)

A genie has been trapped in a lamp and the YouTubers must find a way to free him to get the next key. They will have to outfox Scheherazade and her many thieves if they want to find their way out of the Arabian exhibit.

Challenge: Joey Graceffa and Bretman Rock had to fill the gaps in a story with the worst voted story supposedly getting that person killed.
388"Cursed Treasure"August 21, 2019 (2019-08-21)

X marks the spot. The YouTubers uncover a treasure map with the location of the next key, but dangerous pirates are hot on their trail. They have to brave Pirates' Bay to find the missing pieces, but only the most pirate-worthy among them will avoid death in this exhibit.

Challenge: All remaining guests had to take part in a pirate assault course.

Died: Alex Wassabi was shot by the pirates.

Revived: Coleen Ballinger was brought back to life by the wish granted from the Genie.
399"Prehistoric Evil"August 28, 2019 (2019-08-28)

The YouTubers befriend a caveman who leads them into the prehistoric exhibit where they encounter the Cursed God once again. The YouTubers must open his monument while avoiding death by dinosaur.

Challenge: Rosanna Pansino and Bretman Rock had to take part in a scavenger hunt against dinosaurs to survive.

Died: Rosanna Pansino was eaten alive by dinosaurs.
4010"The Collector Returns"September 4, 2019 (2019-09-04)

The Collector returns to the museum with her most terrifying collection yet and unleashes it on the YouTubers. They must journey back through all the exhibits to find the artifacts needed to defeat her and in turn discover the source of all evil.

Died: Joey Graceffa was trapped inside Pandora's box after being hypnotized by it.

Escaped: Colleen Ballinger and Bretman Rock.

  1. ^ Matthew was beaten to death in episode 5 by the Strong Man, but was revived by the Harp of Lazarus in episode 7, after 2 Lazarus coins were found.
  2. ^ Since only Safiya and Rosanna escaped Willie's Funhouse, they were forced to vote two people that didn't make it out of the challenge. Safiya voted for Nikita, while Rosanna voted for Manny. Nikita won, but in a shocking turn of events, both Nikita and Manny were spared from the Funhouse, and discovered that the person who voted for the winner of the challenge will end up being killed instead. Subsequently, Willie finds and kills Safiya with a fishhook.
