Kėdainiai minaret

Kėdainiai minaret is the only one free-standing minaret in Lithuania. It's located in the city Kėdainiai, at the city park, between Kėdainiai train station and the Dotnuvėlė River.

Kėdainiai minaret is built at 1880 by the Russian general Eduard Totleben who was an owner of Kėdainiai manor. He built this minaret as a memorial for Russian-Turkish war where he fought. Local legend says that he built this building also for his Turkish lover[1] [2].

Kėdainiai minaret is typical Ottoman architecture building. It's needle-toped, 25 meters high and has a balcony which can be reached by interior stairs. There are two plaques at its wall. One is written in Ottoman and says about beautiful palace built by Ottoman sultan, another plaque has an Arabic inscription from sura Al-Baqara, it's verse 255 āyatu-l-kursī which says Who is there can intercede In His presence except As he permitteth?.

The minaret is a local architecture monument.
