Extrapolation from GEL technical recommendations

Required

  • External links must be accompanied by the GEL Iconography external link icon

Recommended

  • Blind users should be warned of this context change by including some visually hidden text reading "leave BBC site" or similar

Implied

  • The text for blind users should come before the link's unique text content.
  • The external link icon should be removed from the accessibility tree

Suggested ACT expectations

  • External links must be accompanied by the GEL Iconography external link icon
  • The external link icon must be hidden from screen readers and other assistive technologies.
  • The external link icon must be included in the keyboard tab order as a separate tab stop to the link
  • Visually hidden text warning of the context change should be included in the link text. This should be "leave BBC site" or similar.
  • The visually hidden text should come before the link's unique text content
