We recently presented a poster titled 'Navigating Genetics of Dementia in the Indian Subcontinent' at the Cell & Gene Therapy conference in Boston. Here is a short summary of the poster: ☛ Dementia affects over 55 million people globally, adding 10 million new cases each year and ranking as the seventh leading cause of death. ☛ In this study, we investigated the genetics of dementia through GWAS on both UK Biobank and Indian cohorts. ☛ A GWAS pipeline was developed using UK Biobank data to identify SNP associations primarily in European ancestry populations. ☛ Exploration of SNP associations in populations with complex genetic substructures, like South Asians, has been limited. To address this gap, we conducted an additional analysis on an Indian cohort. ☛ The analysis showcased population-specific genetic associations in the Indian cohort that are distinct from those in European populations. ☛ The well-known APOE and TOMM40 genes show a strong association with AD and dementia in the European cohort. We are grateful to the UK Biobank and NIMHANS, Bangalore Hospital for their invaluable data, making this research possible. We recently presented a talk at the AI for Drug Discovery Xchange! Here’s a short summary of the talk: ☛ Promise of ML Applications: Using biomarkers to classify therapy responders based on genomic variants shows great promise. ☛ Data Integration: Biomarker applications integrate genomics, transcriptomics, and other omics assays, and can be enhanced with pathology images or spatial transcriptomics. ☛ Efficient Data Management: ⅰ) Metadata Schema: Utilize relevant ontologies like UBERON for multispecies anatomy. ⅱ) Data Storage: Efficiently store data types such as Fastq files for omics data. ⅲ) Result Querying: Efficiently query results, such as cell type annotations from spatial transcriptomics. Strand is helping organizations overcome these challenges by providing AI-enabled ingestion, AI-enabled downstream tools, and software architecture solutioning.
