Discourses around the topic of migration, remittances, and development have been a matter of global interest for international organizations and even the national governments since the late 1900s. Research studies and definition of remittances have mostly focused on its economic value and ignored the socio-cultural values that are being sent by the migrants to their native countries. Moreover, the reports on remittances usually reflect the macroeconomic values and the developmental effects of those remittances are highly debatable. For a better understanding of what remittances are and how it affects the native country or the society, it is necessary to broaden its definition to include the socio-cultural and political characteristics of remittances, since it’s not just the economic resources that are sent by the migrants, but also skill sets, knowledge, behaviour, practices, and much more. Furthermore, the central focus of studying remittances has usually been towards the migrants and their act of sending remittances.

India has a long history of global migration, and it has been since 2008 that India has been the top recipient of remittance receiving countries as per the World Bank and KNOMAD reports. Taking the above-mentioned points into consideration, this research aims at filling the gaps in terms of defining remittances, understanding the debates around the developmental effects of remittances, and specifically studying the effects of remittances at a micro-level perspective, through the case study of the Swaminarayan Mandir Vasna Sanstha (SMVS) community. The research work focuses on understanding how the flow of remittances are affected and influenced by the community from the native country, and eventually the effects it has in the area and amongst its community members locally.

Keywords: remittances; migration; development; transnational community
