New version of the AddPrefix gadget

Hello, everyone!

For the past few weeks, I have been working on a replacement of the old AddPrefix gadget that was a bit faulty. The new gadget, which is now enabled by default for everyone, works quite differently.

The new gadget will remove prefixes when you start editing, and it will then add prefixes when you save the page. This will happen for templates, links and categories. This way, editing in the Incubator should be as similar to editing a normal wiki as possible.

It should work in all wikitext modes, including the 2017 wikitext editor ("wikitext in Visual Editor"), and most importantly, on the mobile site. If you notice any problems with it, please report them here, and I will try to fix them as soon as possible. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:33, 6 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

This is beautiful! I love the way this new gadget works. Thank you.--Samatics (talk) 13:03, 9 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Truly a happy coincidence that its development was underway when I encountered the previous version's bugs. :) -Vipz (talk) 06:42, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please exempt redirect pages from being added to the category and also add a list of exempt pages like Wp/enm/Wikipaedia:Sandbox. -🇺🇦Slava🇺🇦Ukraini🇺🇦Heroyam🇺🇦Slava🇺🇦(talk)🇺🇦 12:29, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Slava Ukraini Heroyam Slava 123: Redirect pages should now be exempted from categorization. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby:, thank you very much! -🇺🇦Slava🇺🇦Ukraini🇺🇦Heroyam🇺🇦Slava🇺🇦(talk)🇺🇦 14:39, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please exempt categories from being automatically added to the main category. I don't want all categories to automatically become part of . And if possible, make this gadget not mandatory. It does not help me at all. --PastelKos (talk) 09:12, 14 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

@PastelKos:, it can be disabled in Special:Preferences in gadgets tab. -🇺🇦Slava🇺🇦Ukraini🇺🇦Heroyam🇺🇦Slava🇺🇦(talk)🇺🇦 09:33, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
@PastelKos: I have now made it so that only articles are automatically added to the root category. Note, however, that the root category will not exist at all when the wiki is imported to a proper domain, so one should not rely on it for a category tree. It is more of a maintenance category for the Incubator itself. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby: Can automatic categorization to the root category be disabled? I prefer having all content categorized into their specific categories. -Vipz (talk) 19:30, 2 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Vipz: It is important to many (most?) projects because that's the way number of articles are counted like : Count the number of pages in that category. So ideally all content pages for a test wiki should be in the root category. The root category is not carried over when a wiki is imported, so it is really just an Incubator maintenance category of sorts. I am looking into the possibility of adding it automatically in the Wikimedia Incubator extension, however, instead of it having to be added (semi-)manually to each page. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:03, 2 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello, how to create a link to an other incubator wiki? Exemple at Wp/rmc/Šerutňi_sera link to Fiňiko kalo čhib (Kaalengo tšimb).--Adehertogh (talk) 13:53, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

You just did it. —Justin (koavf)TCM 15:29, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Koavf, take a look on the page Wp/rmc/Šerutňi_sera, the link Fiňiko kalo čhib (Kaalengo tšimb) is red because of the automatic add of the prefix Wp/rmc/ before the prefix Wp/rmf. --Adehertogh (talk) 16:48, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Did you see Help:FAQ#How_to_link_to_prefixed_pages?? Do you have the AddPrefix extension enabled? —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:54, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Works without addprefix extension. But if anyone else makes a change on the pages i'll be back...--Adehertogh (talk) 19:09, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Adehertogh, Koavf: There was a check for this so that you could link to almost all pages from other test wikis without a prefix being added, but it did not work if you just linked to the info page ("Wp/xyz"). This should be fixed now. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby: could you exempt templates? It is crucial to be able to preview templates without having to fix the link everytime you start editing. -Vipz (talk) 18:39, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Vipz: How do you mean? The gadget will add the prefix when you click the "preview" or "view changes" buttons as well as "publish", if that's what you mean. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:02, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby: It appears to not be the case when the "Show previews without reloading the page" setting is turned on, which I have. Templates do show if I have that setting turned off, but I prefer otherwise. -Vipz (talk) 21:20, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Vipz: I think I have made the gadget work with that feature now, please test. (You may need to do Ctrl+F5 if it is not working right away.) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 23:41, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby: Yep, works now! Thanks, and good job once again, this is a great tool. -Vipz (talk) 23:43, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ficou legal a nova versão do gadget que remove prefixos ao editar e adiciona automaticamente ao mostrar a previsão, por exemplo. Assim fica mais fácil traduzir livros da Bíblia nos Wikcionários.
Leonardo José Raimundo (talk) 03:20, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

On the Indonesian Wikinews Main Page, links that started with Wikinews: or Wikiberita: did not get the proper prefixes. Probably, these are reserved words (Wikinews redirected to the English Wikinews). Could we do / Does it worth doing something about this? - Xbspiro (talk) 21:43, 2 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Xbspiro You can freely move it. And yes, the right one is "Wikiberita" . Veracious (talk) 02:33, 14 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Jon Harald Søby: the gadget has been having the same old issues for a while now (removing prefixes upon review and submit), and not just me, but everyone on the Wy/hbs project. Are you aware why and can it be fixed again? -Vipz (talk) 18:23, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Vipz: Not aware of this, no. Could you give me some examples and/or diffs? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 18:38, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby: Special:Diff/5693585, Special:Diff/5623359, Special:Diff/5690669, Special:Diff/5689426... -Vipz (talk) 18:45, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Vipz: Thanks! Will look into fixing it. Generally, dealing with namespaces like and interwiki links (like "meta:") is quite difficult (because there is no sure way in Javascript to know what is a namespace name and what is an interwiki prefix)… I have made some custom exceptions for common terms, and will add Wikivodič to that list so it is fixed for you at least, but it could re-appear for other project names, so I will try to think of a better long-term solution. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 18:50, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Vipz: Should be fixed now – you may need to hard refresh (Ctrl+F5 for me, but it varies by OS/browser) for it to work, or just wait up to an hour or so.
@Xbspiro: This should also fix the issue you mention for the Indonesian Wikinews above. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 19:43, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I admit that I should have probably reported this earlier. -Vipz (talk) 19:48, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby: can you also allow the custom namespace name "Pomoć"? It translates to "Help". -Vipz (talk) 02:12, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Vipz: Done Jon Harald Søby (talk) 02:15, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hey, @Jon Harald Søby, we've got another issue. ^-^' The gadget wrongly adds prefixes to signatures, on talk pages of these "custom namespaces". Noticed it happening today on Talk:Wy/hbs/Wikivodič:Čarobnjak za stvaranje članaka. Thank you so much on quick responses and fixes, your gadget is appreciated! -Vipz (talk) 22:59, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Vipz: Oops, that should not have happened, haha. Should be fixed now. Again, thanks for reporting, it's hard to find all these things by myself. 😊 Jon Harald Søby (talk) 00:02, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Jon Harald Søby, the add prefix gadget will correctly remove the prefix of the template: but does not write it back went recording the edits. --Adehertogh (talk) 12:56, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Adehertogh: Are you sure it removes them? It doesn't for me. And it is not supposed to remove or add any prefixes in the template (or module) namespace, because code for templates and modules can be quite complex. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:37, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Adehertogh: Sorry, I misunderstood you before, but when re-reading the thread now while archiving the Community Portal, I understood what you meant (that when it is transcluded on a page, doesn't get its prefix added back. I have made a fix for that in the gadget now. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:51, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

About Incubator language section’s font

Is there a way to change font in the whole Incubator’s language section? E.g. I want to change font in every article of Narym Selkup Incubator to Noto Sans (it has wider support of extended cyrillic script). What should I do? Is there a way to change general font or should I do it manually every time in every article? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kaarkemhveel (discussioncontribs) 19:35, 8 January 2023 (UTC).Reply

@Kaarkemhveel, Adding custom font css code to your test project's common.css will work what you want to change. As an example, wp/rki use Noto Sans Myanmar as a default font for their project by using a code in MediaWiki:Wp/rki/Common.css NinjaStrikers «» 16:43, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh, thank you, I’ll try it soon! Kaarkemhveel (talk) 11:38, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Should i create this file in MediaWiki? How can i use this code in wp/sel later? Kaarkemhveel (talk) 13:42, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
You can post the code you want to MediaWiki talk:Wp/sel/Common.css, and then notify an admin either here or on Incubator:Administrators' noticeboard, and we can add it to the correct page. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:37, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Okay, another question then: what part from rki/Common.css example is actually necessary for font changing? lines 1-43? Kaarkemhveel (talk) 11:18, 17 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Kaarkemhveel: I have added the necessary CSS to MediaWiki:Wp/sel/Common.css now. Note that we are unfortunately not allowed (by policy) to use external web fonts, so we can't load the font for those who don't already have it installed; but with this change, everyone who has the font installed will see the page with Noto Sans. If there are any other back-up fonts that are better to use than the defaults, please let me know, and I can add them as well. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 22:31, 17 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Documentation of Template:Test_wiki

The content of Incubator:Policy/Test wiki info page, which documents the usage of Template:Test wiki, should be merged into that template page (or a "/doc" subpage, if those are used on this wiki), since it makes little sense to document a template on a totally different page. - dcljr (talk) 00:37, 2 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

[Time passes…] This would require someone with sufficient edit rights to do it. I can't do it myself. @Jon Harald Søby: pinging you as an editor of both this page and the template in question. Would you agree that a merge and redirect is appropriate here? (Note, BTW, that the template's documentation currently contains the raw wikicode "wiki info page" instead of a usable wikilink, which presumably is what was intended. This should be fixed.) - dcljr (talk) 08:50, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Dcljr: I am not too sure how to approach this actually. Incubator:Policy/Test wiki info page is a translatable page, so if we move that to the /doc subpage, the translations wouldn't be easily available for those who need them (the <languages /> tag would apply to the page it is transcluded on, and test wiki naturally has no translations in that sense.
I created a proper documentation subpage for the template now, with a prominent button to the page in the Incubator namespace. I'm not super happy with that solution, so if you or anyone else have any suggestions for improvements, that would be very welcome. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:27, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Wow… I see that most (nonlocalized) templates here have no documentation at all. That seems… unfortunate. - dcljr (talk) 14:17, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

What code should I use in .css file to change headers’ font?

We have MediaWiki:Wp/sel/Common.css with further code in it:

#mw-content-text { font-family: "Noto Sans";}

It changes overall font, but header remains the same. What should I add? Kaarkemhveel (talk) 15:03, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

If you only want to change the headers, you can add:
h1 {font-family: "Noto Sans";}
h2 {font-family: "Noto Sans";}
h3 {font-family: "Noto Sans";}
h4 {font-family: "Noto Sans";}
h5 {font-family: "Noto Sans";}
h6 {font-family: "Noto Sans";}
There are more elegant solutions and ones that will change all text, but this will accomplish having all levels of headers be in Noto Sans. —Justin (koavf)TCM 00:49, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Well, default font doesn't support extended Cyrillic, so I guess would be nice to have all headers in the same font. Or do you mean something different than that? Kaarkemhveel (talk) 08:33, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Unable to create Wp/cnr/ page

Hello!

I'm trying to add more pages to Montenegrin Wikipedia, but I'm getting an error: "You are trying to create a page without a valid ISO 639-1 or -3 code..." (screenshot added)

Montenegrin language has a valid ISO 639-3 code, check here or here. Also, there are already 1,968 articles with wp/cnr prefix.

I've been able to edit existing pages, but not to add a new one.

On the cnr talk page, I can see other users were unable to create new pages, this has been happening for at least a year.

I already asked the same thing on the Administrators' noticeboard (on 4. Feb) but I got no answer.

Can you please help or point me to someone who can?

Thanks! Millodarka (talk)

Moving the kfb work to nit iso code- for Kolami wikipedia

Hello,

Kolami wikipedia is started about months ago and we are working on content generation. We see there is a need to change the url from wp/kfb to wp/nit as the southeastern Kolami has iso code nit.

Link to the southeastern Kolami wikipedia [1]

Thank you Nskjnv (talk) 07:27, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Another comment: kfb is written in the Devanagari script, and nit is written in the Telugu script. All the content in this Incubator is in the Telugu script, so the move request makes sense to me. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:08, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Creating pages with existing wiki prefix?

This question is highly hypothetical, but I noticed that when you try to create a page such as Wp/en/Main Page, the error message MediaWiki:Wminc-error-wiki-exists is displayed, but doesn't state that administrators can create it. Can administrators create such pages, or is it blocked by the system for everyone? Cmnpt (talk) 02:36, 5 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

I don't know for sure, but looking at the source code, it looks like it can be edited by users with editinterface rights. Sysop and interface-admin have an editinterface in the incubator. Syunsyunminmin (talk) 05:00, 5 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Importing wiki from Miraheze

Hello. I'd like to ask one thing. Is there some way to import a wiki from Miraheze into a test wiki on Incubator? If so, what kind of changes would need to be done before requesting such an import? Is it possible to also import user accounts or do the previous contributors to such wiki have to register on Wikimedia sites if they didn't do it yet?

This is the reason why I'm asking this question: There's a currently unofficial Interslavic language version of Wikipedia that is hosted on Miraheze (https://isv.miraheze.org/). The reason why is that the ISO 639-3 code for Interslavic (isv) is still not approved by the ISL international organization (still pending review since 2019). But I am quite optimistic and I think that it could be reviewed and approved soon. It is proposed as an artificially constructed macro-language, and there is very good reasoning why it would be a good idea to approve this language. Being a native Slavic speaker (my mother tongue is Czech), I can understand Interslavic without any obstructions. It turns out it is actually really understood by all Slavic nations. If that is approved, a test wiki could be under Wp/isv. In case of an import from Miraheze, the wiki would first have to be exported. I suppose there would have to be some necessary changes done to it, like moving pages into the test wiki subpages, and of course changing the project pages namespace so it fits the target project name (in this case Wikipedia, which may be called Vikipedija in Interslavic). After necessary changes, it should be possible to request an import, and link to the database export for importer to download. I am not the owner of the Interslavic wiki hosted on Miraheze, and nor am I asking on behalf of the owner. I ask as I am genuinely curious about it, and may actually relay any information you provide me here to the community. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 13:56, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

In short, yes, as you can export pages from MediaWiki wikis and then import them to others. It may be a little cumbersome, there may be licensing issues, etc., but it can be done on a technical level. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:57, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Cool. Then it should be possible. Interslavic wiki uses compatible license (I even guess the same one), so it should be possible in legal terms as well. The only thing that might be problematic is renaming every page and replacing all of the internal wikilinks with renamed versions, so it can be imported into the test wiki. Or I guess importers have a tool for this? Anyway, thank you for your reply. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 06:38, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and about the users: I suppose previous contributors would need to register again on Wikimedia sites if they didn't yet in order to continue contributing (well, technically they could still contribute anonymously, but it's better to have an account), is that correct? — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 06:59, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Importers would be able to do that and admins, for sure. It would not be possible for standard editors. Re: attribution, users would not have to have an account here (tho, of course, that's nice and especially so if their account names are the same): the edit histories will have attribution for whoever originally edited it on Miraheze. —Justin (koavf)TCM 09:54, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's neat. Thank you. ☺ — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 10:26, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
We can technically import the wiki here, that should be no problem. However, I would wait a while before doing so. At the moment the language is not eligible at all (due to not having an ISO 639-3 code), and even when it does, it is still not automatically eligible; the most relevant portion of the m:Language proposal policy is elegibility point #4.
Besides, we (the language committee) have in rare occasions accepted new wikis without them actually having been in the Incubator; the most recent example is the Western Armenian Wikipedia, which was started as a project within the Armenian Wikipedia. So since Interslavic already has this existing wiki on Miraheze, I think it would be better and easier for its community to stay there rather than migrating to the Wikimedia Incubator. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:50, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I agree. I'm not however trying to agitate on behalf of the community, I'm just a messenger at this point. It's not my idea to migrate to Wikimedia, that was expressed by multiple people within the community as well. Plus I've already read the proposal policy, and the only thing that doesn't meet the requirements is the lack of the valid ISO code. Interslavic is used outside of online community, it's actually used in hotels with a high traction of Slavic tourists, and it does have literature outside of wiki space. And it's growing. The only thing that currently is missing is the valid ISO code. That's the only thing that prevents the community to create an official language version of Wikipedia. And about the import, it's around 2000 pages in total to be imported at this point, so I'm not sure if that's the scale that would allow the wiki to be imported, but I've seen a language proposal for Toki Pona Wikipedia, and they also have an existing wiki on an external wikifarm. They do have a valid ISO code tho. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 14:41, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Can I set multiple languages for multiple wikis I want to contribute to?

Hello. I mainly edit Czech Wikivoyage now, but it is possible that in the future I might actually contribute to an Interslavic Wikipedia (that doesn't exist yet, see above). It's a completely different language, but is it possible to actually set up multiple languages to contribute to? If so, how do I do that? Do I separate them by comma, or by a space? — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 14:07, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Doesn't seem so. It looks like I'll have to set a default wiki now, until there might be a possibility to save multiple. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 14:11, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
You can only select one wiki as your test wiki, but that doesn't stop you from contributing to test wikis in other languages. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:18, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I discovered that. Thank you anyway, for confirming. My main language is Czech, but I'm going to start learn Interslavic, so I can contribute to the Interslavic Wikipedia in the future, and contribute to the community. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 08:37, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

How do I get started on a proposal?

I want to attempt to make a Proto Indo European Wikipedia. I believe there have been many failed attempts at this, and I'm not sure why they failed. I don't think I will necessarily be that much more successful but I want to try making some articles to start. How can I do that?Immanuelle (talk) 14:49, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure if Proto Indo European is a valid language. It sounds like a proto-language, which generally isn't allowed to have its own language version of Wikipedia or any other WM project. Proto-languages also are not eligible for a valid ISO code, which is one of the reasons why they can't be accepted. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it a proto-language? I guess you might want to check Meta for the details. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 18:42, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

See m:LangCom for our current requirements. Plainly put, a simple project would not be accepted today. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:44, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
You're probably more likely to get the Japanese Wikipedia community to accept that kind of content on their wiki (e.g., a new namespace or subpages in the main namespace, or whatever). And I'm not syaing it's likely that they will accept it, just that it's less unlikely than getting a whole new wiki. Another possibility would be to start a wikibook along those lines in the Japanese Wikibooks. Not sure what the conventions are over there, as far as what would and wouldn't be allowed. In any case, you can ask about this on one or both of those wikis and see what people say. - dcljr (talk) 22:46, 29 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Request protection for all landing pages

I just reverted some vandalism that had been up at Wp/nlv for a year and a half (!). I think these overview pages for projects should have at least indefinite protection that restricts edits to autoconfirmed users. There's probably no need to edit these pages at all, but certainly no need for IPs to come along and mangle them for years. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:03, 30 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

It would be a bit tedious (and, I think, also exaggerated) to go and protect all info pages. But maybe we can have an abusefilter that at least logs all edits to them, to keep an easier overview. --MF-W {a, b} 21:21, 30 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
FWIW, I think I agree with Justin on this one. Can page protection not be done with a bot? Alternatively, perhaps an admin who can see which of those pages are not currently "watched" would be willing to "watch" them (but I suppose that might be even more tedious to accomplish). - dcljr (talk) 10:14, 2 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
In order to prevent destruction of not only existing info pages but also info pages that will be created in the future, I think it is better to disallow or warn by abuse-filter rather than protecting them one by one. Syunsyunminmin (talk) 10:25, 2 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Just so long as established users can still make minor corrections when necessary… - dcljr (talk) 16:25, 3 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
We can set the abuse-filter to be editable by autoconfirmed users. Syunsyunminmin (talk) 16:28, 3 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
However, this filter is not intended for serious vandalism (like Copyvio), so tagging alone might be enough. After a while, we will review the tagged edits and if those are mostly non-constructive edits, we will be able to promote the filter action from tagging to disallow. Syunsyunminmin (talk) 16:38, 3 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
For the start I have created Special:AbuseFilter/33 to log info-page edits. --MF-W {a, b} 10:36, 2 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

How to make templates

Hi!

I am currently doing projects for Betawi Wikipedia. I tried to make a template page, e.g., Instrument infobox. I copied to a page with a prefix Template, and then I copied this

Template:Infobox instrument

But, it shows only like that, and even in a preview, it appears only like that, not the box. What should I do?

Besides, what are the templates I should make for our incubating language? Thanks. Bangrapip (talk) 09:56, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Bangrapip: Hi and welcome!
The reason it just shows up as a red link is because that template doesn't exist yet for the Betawi Wikipedia; it would be located at Template:Wp/bew/Infobox instrument. However, adding infobox templates can be very difficult (especially if you try to copy them from a large language like English). For a project that is just starting, like the Betawi Wikipedia, I would instead recommend that you use the Databox template. We have detailed instructions for how to add that and use it in your wiki here: Incubator:Wikidata/Databox. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:40, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your answer. I'll try to learn the link.
By the way, what makes it difficult to copy template from a large language to a new language? I mean, what does a new page need to be in order to be able to take the templates from such a large language? What are the requirements?
Thank you. Bangrapip (talk) 12:42, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that one template in big language Wikipedias is not usually just one template. It is one template which uses several other templates, and each of those templates in turn can use several other templates, as well as modules. To use the concrete example of en:Template:Infobox instrument, you would actually have to import ten different templates/modules to use that one template – and that's a mild example. Another example, en:Template:Infobox officeholder (used for politicians), would require you to import approximately 110 different templates and modules! And many templates also add categories automatically depending on lots of factors; for the example I checked just now, that one "infobox officeholder" template in the English Wikipedia automitacally added 67 different categories. So importing it is really not feasible for test wikis in the Incubator. We really really need global templatesJon Harald Søby (talk) 18:37, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia tamazight (wp/zgh/

Hi, we have been working on wikipedia tamazight (wp/zgh) for a long time and I would like to know the status of this project, can it be approved soon --Lhoussine AIT TAYFST (talk) 13:47, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Lhoussine AIT TAYFST: Hi! We mainly look at these statistics to determine whether a wiki is active enough. I usually suggest approval after there have been around 3–4 months of consecutive activity from at least 4–5 users. So I would say that if you keep the current activity up, we can start the approval process in 1–2 months. Keep up the good work! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:35, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Miraheze down the tubes -- what about the things that were moved there?

On June 15, Miraheze's board made an announcement that the site will be shutting down in August (Aug 31 is the last day they will be up). I notice that some wikis from the Incubator were moved to Miraheze (for example Wp/enm, and presumably everything with MovedtoIncPlus2 on it. What is the strat on this? JPxG (talk) 06:36, 21 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

First, it appears that they may not be disappearing--who knows? Secondly, we cannot control their content or policies. So if that site disappears and the content is gone, it's not obvious that we should absorb its content and community: it was moved there for a reason. For those who want to continue working on those projects and are concerned about the site disappearing, I recommend trying to migrate to Wikia, which I don't think will disappear soon. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:27, 21 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that for Fandom (Wikia later renamed to this name), is their Special:Import still working? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 05:11, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Near as I can tell. I'm an admin on a wiki there and Special:Import at least displays, tho I haven't tried uploading anything. —Justin (koavf)TCM 12:03, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf Another problem that I don't trust Fandom is based on Minecraft department (sic?), Per PCGamesN, there are concerns about extra advertisements unrelated to community, and some ads look like auto-inserted via wikitexts, too-shiny yellow navigation bars and pop-ups, anonymous users can't view history of files, can't download original files instead of thumbnails, and lower-and-lower bandwiths when editing, etc. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:09, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

{|class="mobile-only" is not working

On the page Template:Wn/bn/Main page header/খেলাঘর, I am currently testing some new changes for the main page header of Bengali Wikinews. However, I have encountered an issue with the code. Specifically, the "wikitable" class "mobile-only" (line 17) is not functioning as intended. This means that even in desktop view, the mobile-only part is still visible. I need assistance in figuring out how to prevent the mobile version from appearing on desktop or finding an alternative solution. Need help. Asked42 (talk) 16:29, 22 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. What was the reference for the "mobile-only" class? Syunsyunminmin (talk) 17:01, 22 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

" Script error: No such module" problem.

Hello currently, i'm facing a 'missing module' problem like at here despite already being created for a long time. Did i miss something? Thank you. Veracious (talk) 04:25, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

The solution to redirect Module:Wy/id/Linkphone to Module:Wy/id/LinkPhone maybe won't work because their data models are different: one is just standard wikitext, just like this page and the other is marked as Scribunto module. If you change the data model, that may fix it. If you delete the wikitext one and move the Scribunto model to it, that may also fix it. —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:21, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf Hmm, ok. How to change the data model? Veracious (talk) 06:52, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
If you are an admin, you can go to the page, view "Page information", and then change "Page content model". If you are not, then you can't. At the very least, you can copy/paste so that the two names have the same content, but that is a stopgap fix. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:55, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Find a way to limit Incubator:Featured wikis entries

Really, I'm not sure whether this is a good place to ask about concerns about this Incubator: namespace page that is a part of Incubator's mainpage itself.

For recent one year (maybe), some users (e.g. @Пан Хаунд, NikosLikomitros, Es Krim 5 juta Rasa:) "diligently" added too many entries to this page, lead it and Incubator Main Page explosively growthed. I don't know why such additions are benefit for us, this already break the normal formattion of main page. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:00, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Liuxinyu970226. Hello. You could see that after your warning in August I didn't add wikis to the table if it had already contained of 10 Wikipedias.
I also think that if the rule exists, we don't have to violate it.Пан Хаунд (talk) 06:34, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Are all the wikis listed actually active? Feel free to remove those who aren't. --MF-W {a, b} 09:10, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
That seems not easily work-able, even I removed some, there are still some other users diligently re-add them just based on their judges. Currently we consider projects that have at least 3 active users (neither bots, nor anonymous, and perhaps nor socks) in recent months, include this month (just by checking catanalysis tool) are "active projects waiting for approval (sic)". TBH, this looks like too very easy to satisfy to be useful, so I wonder that should the requirement for approval-able projects be better improved? So activities of these projects can be more convincing to everyone, to believe that they shall be approved, rather than questionable activities. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:01, 29 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226 Thank you for informing me on the discussion. I haven't added any wikis apart from Karakalpak this year; in the contrary one month ago I removed Adja Wikipedia which was inactive. I think that the rule should be that the project is active for two to three months in order to add it there. I haven't contributed in the explosive growth, but I have removed a few wikis, particularly the approved ones. NikosLikomitros (talk) 14:02, 29 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I totally agree with activity for at least 3 months, and should better be persistence activities. But stuck on 3 users may still lead negative interests for such activities, shouldn't this be upgraded to be 5 users? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 15:07, 29 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello. I only added Central Dusun Wikipedia based on the table of wikis highlighted that showed active status. I work with the community of the project personally, and the contributors expressed concerns that their efforts are not tangible or noticeable as the main page status is a significant motivator for them. I have no issue with the list of the main page increasing so long as the projects are considered active, and I consider it more of a positive result to see more active projects shown on the main page. It is very difficult to get communities to participate willingly without them seeing the results of their activeness, and the main page is what keeps them motivated. If the rule is upgraded to 5 active users per month for 3 months, I'm afraid their willingness to contribute might go down as many already find it hard to contribute for 3 months straight in the current rules for active status. Therefore, I don't see having a large list of active projects on the main page as a bad thing and prefer to keep it that way as a motivator to keep active. Ultron90 (talk) 03:30, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ultron90 There are too many cases where some projects are only having 3 active users in some random, non-persistence months (e.g. 3 in March, then down to one or two in April, May, and suddenly 3 or more in June...), are you really sure you're agreeing multiple adding and removing just based on one-month activity? And given the cases of Wp/mnc and Wp/ryu where both are having histories of "activities" by sock accounts, I would rather believe that there are still likely cases on the de facto listed projects, how can that problem be resolved just by adding them? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:38, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226 I wasn't implying that they should be added if they are only active for one month. I was saying that I support that if it is a project that is considered active (3 users for 3 months straight, the current rule), then it should be featured on the main page regardless of how many are in the list, to encourage continued activity. If it is just one month of activity, then it shouldn't be featured. I would prefer the featured list to be coded to be dynamic so it auto updates by itself based on the catanalysis data (I initially thought that this was how it gets featured), but I don't know how to do that. Regarding sock accounts, I think it is up to the Language Committee to investigate and determine if indeed the users are sock accounts once a complaint has been lodged. Even if the limits are increased, sock accounts can just be increased too. Ultron90 (talk) 05:07, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ultron90 Also, it's really a problem for main page being too long, since it can only lead more and more difficult on loading it, especially for mobile devices, as I've tried, the current mainpage already waste 1.25 G memories for loading, it won't be so before the Featured wikis list being explosively populated, just remember the comment code of that page:

CONTRIBUTORS: if your test wiki is active, you are allowed to add it to the appropriate section; but only up to 10 projects should be featured per column at the same time.

Where, still, Пан Хаунд is violating it. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:19, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Just set the page protection to "admins-only", so those "diligent" users won't bloat the list. Users may request a project to be featured (or removed) on the list via the talk page or through admin notice. Veracious (talk) 03:34, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226 It is unusual that adding some text causes such a high memory load on a page unless there is a glitch somewhere in the code. Maybe we need the mainpage to be recoded for better memory management? I personally have no problem loading the mainpage using mobile so I have no proper view on this loading issue. I hope other users or admins can give their view on this. Ultron90 (talk) 10:41, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

URL redirection broken in interwiki links

Hello, creating an interwiki link such voy:Brno on Czech Wikipedia correctly forms the URL https://cs.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Brno, but this URL redirects to the main page of Czech Wikivoyage in the Incubator, ie. https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wy/cs?goto=mainpage and from there further to the actual main page at , while it should correctly redirect to the actual article, i.e. the destination should be https://incubator.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wy/cs/Brno. I found this broken for other projects in Incubator too, e.g. Indonesian Wikivoyage.

We would like to promote Wikivoyage in Wikipedia and the broken interwiki links along with a hardcoded sister project linking system that utilizes interwiki links prohibits us from effectively doing so. In the mean time, I read in FAQ that this should be possibly, which suggest that the current behavior is wrong:

You can specify a normal URL, and it will redirect to the page on Incubator (xyz.wikiproject.org/wiki/Page → incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wx/xyz/Page)

Is this a known problem? What can be done to have this fixed and make interwiki links redirect to the individual articles again? --Blahma (talk) 11:30, 10 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

(CRAZY INCUBATOR TRICK) How to put text under the Wikipedia logo on an incubator wiki!

DISCLAIMER: This trick only works properly on the "Vector Legacy" version. If you are using "Vector 2022" the logo will not look right.
Most versions of Wikipedia that you can find on the Incubator do not have words under their logos. However, if you go to the main page on the Chinook Jargon version of Wikipedia (and a couple other pages), you will see the following logo:
File:ChinookFakeLogo.png
In Chinook Jargon, the subtitle "Twax̣buk Kopa Wikilaiti" mostly serves as a placeholder, due to its unintentionally humorous implications, since "twax̣-buk kopa wik-ilaiti" technically means "the encyclopedia in a condition without slavery", giving obvious implications for all other encyclopedias. However, I couldn't think of a better translation, even after I searched for better words in a few Chinook dictionaries. But that's not the point.

Now for the cool part

In order to replicate this and put a similar logo in an incubating wiki that YOU edit, you must:

 • Take a screenshot of the blank, textless wiki logo that you see on the incubator.
 • Crop the screenshot so that it only has the logo in it. Make sure there's enough space for the text below. Do not resize the logo.
 • Add text underneath the wiki logo. (The Wikipedia logo text is in the Linux Libertine font, but I used Times New Roman.)
 • Upload the edited screenshot to Wikimedia Commons.
 • Click "edit source" on a page from your wiki and add the following bold text:

<div style="position: absolute; left: -201px; top: -145px; width: 10px; height: 28px> </div>

 • Replace "File:ChinookFakeLogo.png" with the file name of the image you just uploaded. (containing the correct file type and the "File:" prefix)
 • Click "publish changes" to save it. The text should be under the Wikipedia logo, but a second Wikipedia logo will likely be visible behind the first one. The logo that is behind the other one is your "fake logo."
 • To adjust the position of the fake logo underneath so that it is completely behind the real one, change the "px" values next to left: and top:
 • INCREASE the PX value for "left:" to move the logo RIGHT.
 • DECREASE the PX value for "left:" to move the logo LEFT.
 • INCREASE the PX value for "top:" to move the logo DOWN.
 • DECREASE the PX value for "top:" to move the logo UP.
 • Your fake logo will NOT be in the correct position on either source previews or non-source edits, so the only way to check if your logo is in the correct position is to click "Publish changes" every time you move the image.
 • Since both PX values will (probably) be negative, this could be even more confusing.

The position of the Wikipedia logo does not vary between pages, so you will be able to copy and paste your logo to ANY article, even if the article is on a different-language version of Wikimedia Incubator.
P.S. You will not be able to remove the Incubator egg from the top left corner of the logo, but it still is cool. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by POSSUM chowg (discussioncontribs).

Using a z-index, you can put lots of things above or below lots of things. E.g., I put a photo underneath the logo on my userpage at en.wp: w:en:User:Koavf. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:17, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Salar Vikipediyası

I have been making Salar additions from dictionary sources on Wiktionary for a while now. And it's only recently that I noticed that the Salar Wikipedia had an attempt and came to review it. But the situation on Salar Wikipedia is deplorable. Tons of words and suffixes that do not exist in Salar are written on the site as if they existed, as if this were the Salar language. By Salar, I thought we meant the language of the Salars in Xunhua Salar Autonomous District, but there is no such language here. With my experience in Salar, I will edit the pages written under the name Salar on the site and remove non-Salar words and replace them with Salar words. While doing this, you can check it with the references, as it will most likely be added to Wiktionary.

Hi, I have a question. I'm currently restarting this project from 10 years ago (2014). I'm maintaining the creation of articles about new words every day, at least 3 articles. So, when will this Wikitionary project be officially opened? Thanks! Như Gây Mê (talk) 09:09, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
