Four persons, including a couple, were arrested on Sunday for allegedly smuggling 927 gram of gold dust worth Rs 64.89 lakh by spraying it on trolley bags to evade security checks at the Surat International Airport.
According to the Surat Police Special Operations Group (SOG), from Surat, the couple went to Dubai, where their accomplice handed them gold in liquid form. The accused allegedly smuggled the gold by mixing it with chemicals and spraying it on rexine and rubber sheets of trolley bags to evade security checks at the airport.
Acting on a tip-off, SOG officers tracked a car that arrived near a hotel in Surat. “As a couple alighted from the car, two youths arrived and took their trolley bags. Soon after, the police stopped them. When the bags were checked, they were found to be empty,” said an officer.
Following this, the officers tore the rexine of the trolley bags and found a black material and with the help of a fire gun and chemicals, gold dust particles were discovered.
Surat SOG Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajdeep Nakum said, “The couple landed at Surat airport from Dubai on Saturday evening and went home. On Sunday, they attempted to handover the gold to Abdul Samad Bemat and were caught.”
“The smugglers used aqua regia chemical to hide the gold dust, which cannot be detected during screening at the airport. During interrogation, the couple said that the gold was sent by Shehzad Shah, a resident of Mangrol who is at present in Dubai. We have seized their passports,” he added.
The accused have been booked for cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
