On the first day when the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) took effect replacing the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively, the Bengaluru city police registered 39 cases.
The new laws came into force on Monday. According to data shared by the police, most cases under them were registered in the Whitefield division (nine), followed by the southeast (six), west (five), south and east (four each), northeast (three), north and central (two each) divisions. Four cases were registered by the traffic police.
B Dayananda, Commissioner of Police, said on Tuesday said there were seven cases registered under the BNSS and that the rest were under the BNS.
Till 9.30 pm on Monday, 80 FIRs were registered under the three new laws across Karnataka.
Home Minister G Parameshwara said that if the new laws applied only to Karnataka, the state government would have asked for them to be rescinded. But as they apply to the entire country, lakhs of cases will be registered and rejecting them will become complicated, he explained.
âThe personnel have been trained and they will learn. It may take a couple of monthsâŚ,â he added.
