Delhi Police files FIR against TMC MP Mahua Moitra over ‘derogatory’ post on NCW chief

Moitra has been booked under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) that pertains to work, gesture or act intending to outrage modesty of woman, said DCP (PRO) Suman Nalwa.

The IFSO unit of Delhi Police Sunday registered an FIR against Krishnanagar TMC MP Mahua Moitra over her remarks against National Commission of Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma.

Moitra has been booked under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) that pertains to work, gesture or act intending to outrage modesty of woman, said DCP (PRO) Suman Nalwa.

Earlier, NCW had taken suo motu cognizance of Moitra’s remarks and sought an FIR against her. On July 4, Moitra posted a video on X showing Sharma arriving at the site of stampede in Hathras, which was later deleted.

The post showed a man holding an umbrella and walking behind Sharma.

“An FIR should be registered against Moitra and a detailed action report should be communicated to the Commission within 3 days,” the NCW said in a post on X.

In its complaint, the NCW had stated, “… the crude remarks made by Moitra, are extremely outrageous and a sheer violation of a women’s right to live with dignity.”

Responding to NCW’s post, Moitra wrote: “Come on Delhi Police please take action immediately on suo motu orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in next 3 days to make a quick arrest. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella .”
