5 SOL students accused of causing damage worth Rs 2.5 L at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College

The college has also lodged a formal complaint in this regard in the Malviya Nagar Police Station for taking action under relevant laws.

A police complaint has been filed against five students of the School of Open Learning (SOL) for damaging the property at Delhi University’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, officials said on Tuesday. The complaint was filed after the college principal on Monday wrote to the chairperson of the School of Open Learning (SOL) and the Delhi Police regarding the alleged “incident of trespassing, threatening and wilful damage to the college classroom worth Rs 2.5 lakh.”

In his letter, Principal Arun Kumar Atree wrote, “On 30.06.2024…five students of School of Open Learning during examination entered C-3 classroom without permission and caused significant damage to our interactive panel in the said classroom. The act of vandalism has not only disrupted our educational activities but has also resulted in considerable financial loss and fear among the staff members”

“We have enclosed photographs of the damaged property, CCTV footage and other relevant documents of the incident.” the letter stated. The incident happened after a first-year SOL student of BA Pass programme was allegedly caught cheating with his mobile phone at his examination centre at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh College on June 26.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Atree further mentioned, “The accused came to our college to give an examination on June 26. While taking the examination, he was caught cheating with his mobile phone. The student came back to our college on June 30 and destroyed our interactive smart classroom panel. We have filed a complaint with the SOL and the Delhi Police. We have tried contacting the student but he is absconding and his phone is off.”

“He has also threatened the workers on our campus to not complain about their vandalism to the authorities,” Atree added.

Meanwhile, SOL chairperson Payal Mago said, “I have received the complaint today. We have taken a look at it and have forwarded it to our college’s disciplinary committee which will speak to the student and ask him why he/she caused this damage and produce a report in a maximum of 15 days.”

The college has also lodged a formal complaint in this regard in the Malviya Nagar Police Station for taking action under relevant laws.
