Mumbai police Friday received around 70 complaints of lost mobile phones and a case was registered over theft of purse as fans showed up in large numbers to participate in the victory parade of the Indian cricket team that returned after the T20 World Cup.
According to police, over 60 complaints were received by the personnel at the police station as another four complaints were lodged online. “We are still trying to figure out the number of people who have lost their phones because complainants are still approaching us,” said an officer.
A case of theft was registered at Marine Drive after a woman approached the police alleging that her purse, consisting of valuables and a mobile phone, was stolen in the crowd. “As it was heavily crowded, we have also managed to reunite about 25 children with their families and we have also returned mobile phones of several people who had lost in the crowd,” an officer added.

The Mumbai Air Pollution Mitigation Plan (MAPMP), released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in March 2023, had identified dust arising from construction and demolition activity, road dust and open burning of solid waste as the top three contributors to the city’s worsening air quality. However, the BMC earmarked almost 80 per cent of the air quality management fund provided by Central government’s Fifteenth finance Commission (FFC) for acquiring electric buses.
Other areas such as solid waste management and road dust mitigation received much lesser share of the FFC fund provided to the urban local bodies across states.

Shiv Sena leader arrested for ‘helping’ son in BMW hit-and-run case
The Worli Police arrested a local Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leader and his driver after his car, driven by his son, allegedly mowed down a woman.
The BMW car owned by Rajesh Shah, a leader of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) from Palghar, rammed into a two-wheeler on which the woman was travelling and dragged her on the bonnet for nearly two kilometres before flinging her on the road, in Mumbai on Sunday morning, police said.
Rajesh and his driver Rajrishi Bidawat were arrested for ‘helping’ the former’s son Mihir Shah after he allegedly mowed down the woman, identified as Kaveri Nakhwa (45), a resident of Worli Koliwada. Mihir is absconding.
One injured in tree collapse incident
One person was injured after a tree collapsed on him in Ghatkopar East, making it the fourth such incident in Mumbai within a week. Portions of the road and footpath were also damaged in the incident, officials said.
Brijesh Kumar (55), who was injured, was taken to Rajawadi Hospital from where he was discharged after treatment.
Earlier two persons lost their lives in two different tree collapse incidents in Worli (BDD Chawl) and Parel on July 1 and 2, respectively. Two vehicles were damaged in another incident in Dadar on July 5.
NDRF rescues 49 people stranded in resort amid rains in Thane, 16 villagers in Palghar
The National Disaster Response Force rescued 49 people from a water-logged resort in Maharashtra's Thane and 16 villagers in Palghar amid heavy rains, officials said.
A team from the NDRF used boats and life jackets to rescue people stranded at the resort due to flooding in the Shahpur area, an official said.
Similarly, 16 villagers were rescued by the NDRF and firefighters in Palghar district in the afternoon, a district official said.
Shiv Sena leader, his driver detained for inquiry after BMW drags woman to death
Shiv Sena party leader and owner of the BMW Rajesh Shah and the driver Rajrishi Rajendrasingh Bisawat, have been detained by inquiry, hours after the luxury car rammed into the bike of a couple in Worli, dragging the woman on the bonnet of the car for 100 metres leading to her death.
Earlier, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had said the law is equal for everyone and its implementation will not be different in the accident.
Woman who lost her life in Mumbai hit-and-run case identified
The woman, who lost her life after a speedy BMW car dashed into the two-wheeler of a couple in Worli early Sunday, has been identified as Kaveri Nakhwa (45), a resident of Worli Koliwada.
She was heading back along with her husband to sell fish after procuring it from Sassoon dock.
The car hit the couple’s scooter following which they lost balance and landed on the bonnet of the vehicle. The husband quickly jumped off but Kaveri couldn’t. On panicking, the car continued to drive, dragging Kaveri on the bonnet for around 100 metres before flinging her on the road, the police sources said.
Although the locals rushed her to the Nair Hospital, the doctors pronounced her dead.
Speeding BMW rams into bike in Worli, drags woman for 100 metres to death
A speeding BMW car rammed into the bike of a couple in Worli on Sunday, dragging the woman on the bonnet of the car for 100 metres leading to her death and injuring her husband.
The police said that they are on the lookout for the accused.
This comes on the backdrop of a hit-and-run case involving a Porsche in Pune, where a 17-year-old minor had hit a motorcycle and killed two people.
Mumbai's water stock increases by 4% margin owing to heavy rainfall
Owing to heavy rains Saturday night, Mumbai's water stock increased by a 4% margin - the highest this season.
At present, the water level in all the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai stand at 14.52 per cent. Earlier on Saturday, the water stock stood at 10.8 per cent.
Nightlong rain leaves roads waterlogged, showers to continue through the day
Several roads in Mumbai are waterlogged after heavy rainfall continued to lash the city through Saturday night. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), 24 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Santacruz observatory till this morning, while the coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 61 mm.
According to the IMD, the city will likely witness generally cloudy skies and moderate rainfall today. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 33 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Data furnished by the automatic weather system (AWS) of BMC showed that 47.51 mm of rains were recorded in the island city, followed by 36.23 mm in eastern suburbs and 19.6 mm in western suburbs.
Maharashtra CM Shinde blames low voter turnout, '400 Plus' win assumption for NDA's loss in the state during Lok Sabha polls
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the NDA's loss in the recent Lok Sabha elections in the state was due to many "loyal voters being away on vacation" during the voting period. They assumed the saffron alliance would easily win over 400 seats, he said.
At a rally in Mumbai, BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis agreed with Shinde. He said the NDA leaders did not pay enough attention to the false information spread by the opposition during the campaign.

Taking selfies on the move: Motorcycle slams into crash barrier; one dead, one injured
One person died and another lost both his legs after their motorcycle met with an accident while they were taking selfies on the move on Beed bypass road, a police official said on Saturday.
The incident happened on Friday afternoon and a video showing the rider and pillion smiling for selfies before the motorcycle rammed into the metal crash barrier of the road went viral on social media.
“Pillion Anirudh Kalkumbe (25) died, while rider Madhu Shelke lost both his legs. They were going to Tuljapur from Beed when the incident took place,” he said.
Exotic birds, monkeys smuggled from Thailand seized at Mumbai airport
The Customs has seized seven exotic birds and three monkeys, smuggled alive from Thailand, at the Mumbai airport and detained two passengers, officials said on Saturday.
The baggage of the two passengers who landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on Friday was searched on suspicion and seven flame bowerbirds, two cottontop tamarin monkeys and a marmoset monkey were found concealed inside, said a customs official.
The surviving birds and monkeys were handed over to the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) for treatment.
Maharashtra Congress seeks applications for assembly poll tickets; aspirants to pay Rs 10k to Rs 20k
The Congress on Saturday sought applications from those aspiring for tickets to contest the Maharashtra assembly polls, likely to be held in October-November.
In a statement, the state Congress unit said aspirants from the general category will be required to give Rs 20,000 to the party fund with the application, while women and those from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories will have to give Rs 10,000.
These forms will have to be submitted to the party's district units by August 10, it said.

A Mumbai court on Saturday denied interim protection from arrest to the owner of a Uttarakhand-based Ayurveda firm booked for allegedly creating and posting a deepfake video of actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Sessions judge V M Pathade denied interim protection from arrest to Abhijit Patil, who runs an Ayurveda firm in Rishikesh.
Bachchan registered a case with the cyber police in May after coming across several deepfake videos on social media, which showed him promoting products of Patil's company.
KEM Hospital issues notices to six staffers after video shows paper plates made of patient reports
The administration of the civic-run King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital has issued show-cause notices to six staffers after a video showed paper plates made out of patient reports, an official said on Saturday.
Talking to PTI, KEM Dean Dr Sangeeta Ravat clarified that the plates were not from reports of patients.
"They are not patient reports. They are old folders of CT scans given to scrap dealers for being repurposed. The only mistake was that these scrap papers were not shredded before being given away," Dr Ravat said.
8 held for stealing materials worth Rs 29 lakh from firm in Palghar
Eight persons were arrested on Saturday for allegedly breaking into the premises of a company and stealing materials worth Rs 29 lakh in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said.
The accused broke into a company in the Manichapada area of Nalla Sopara in the wee hours of July 3 and decamped with ready cables and raw copper material rolls worth Rs 29 lakh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Madan Ballal said.
The police have recovered the stolen materials, a truck, a motorcycle and mobile phones from the accused, he said.
The probe has revealed that two of the accused were history sheeters with cases of murder to their name, senior inspector Pramod Badakh said.
Mumbai’s rain deficit to continue with only moderate showers likely, lake levels touch 10%
Mumbai, which has been experiencing a shortage of rain, continued to receive minimal rainfall while neighbouring districts Thane and Raigad were issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rain on Saturday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that Mumbai may not receive the usual heavy rainfall typical of its monsoon season in the upcoming week.

Maharashtra opposition questions CM Shinde's cash reward for Indian cricket team
Opposition Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) have raised question marks over the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's announcement of prize money of Rs 11 crore to the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team, and alleged that by doing so, the government wants to pat itself on the back.
The opposition parties said that while they were proud of the cricketers' achievement, there was no need to give Rs 11 crore from the state coffers and asked the chief minister to pay the amount from his own pocket.

One injured in fire in hutments at an under-construction building in Khar
One person was injured after a fire broke out in the hutments housing workers at an under-construction building in Khar on Saturday morning. As per preliminary information, the fire in the huts was reported at 11.17 am at Khar East's Nirmal Nagar.
While the fire was confined to household articles as well as the electrical and wooden installations of nearly six huts, one person sustained burn injuries owing to the explosion of an LPG cylinder.
The victim has been identified as Abruddin Shaikh (25) and has been taken to the civic-run Kasturba hospital for treatment.
