The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) criticized Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for their inefficient tackling of waterlogging in several areas and disruption of daily life in Mumbai, following heavy rains on Monday. The BJP too lashed out at the civic officials, blaming them for being unprepared to handle such situations.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and MLA Aaditya Thackeray slammed the BMC and Shinde stating that the BMC was unprepared for the rains and lacked accountability due to delayed civic body elections over the past two years.

“A terribly incompetent illegal CM, running a regime that isn’t answerable to Mumbai. Despite having all the capabilities like dewatering pumps, pumping stations, rain water holding tanks, contour surveys… today we woke up to being disrupted by rains. All they could give us is photo ops from the disaster management room. Ward officers are mini municipal commissioners, and they need to be appointed. I have said this before, and repeating it. They don’t know how to make Mumbai run, on such days,” Aaditya said in a post on social media platform X.

Lok Sabha MP and chief of Mumbai Congress Varsha Gaikwad also criticized the state government stating that it had failed the city.

“Today the first big rains have caused havoc in Mumbai. All the claims made by this Maha-corrupt, contractor-friendly government have proven to be false yet again. This government and its officials are shameless liars! … Today we saw many roads turn into mini-rivers and peak-hour traffic paralysed, owing to flooding in many areas. Due to waterlogging on the railway tracks, all the three rail lines were impacted,” Gaikwad said in a tweet on X.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Nana Patole added, “The government’s incompetence has been exposed by the very first rains. The Chief Minister cannot blame the weather for his failures. Mumbai wouldn’t be paralyzed if actual work had been done.”

Patole criticized the lack of coordination between municipal and railway authorities, attributing the flooding to corruption and mismanagement.

BJP MLA Ashish Shelar blamed BMC officials for Mumbai’s condition and alleged misappropriation of funds. “Citizens are suffering due to the ongoing rains in Mumbai. Water has accumulated in many places. That has affected the traffic. BMC officials are responsible for all these issues. The contractors have not cleaned the drains properly and have stolen money of the BMC. The laxity of the Sena UBT during its tenure of 25 years is also responsible for all this,” Shelar said.

In response to the criticism, CM Shinde urged not to politicize the issue and laid stress on efforts to assist citizens during the crisis.
