The Mumbai police investigating the BMW hit-and-run case have learnt that the accused Mihir Shah visited a bar in Juhu along with his four friends hours before the accident and paid a bill of about Rs 18,730 at around 1 am Sunday.

Mihir, who allegedly mowed down a 45-year-old woman in Worli while driving a BMW car at around 5.45 am, was suspected to have consumed alcohol at Global Tapas Bar, according to the police. Son of Rajesh Shah, a senior leader of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Mihir is absconding, and the police have issued a lookout circular against against him.

A police officer involved in the probe revealed that they recovered the bill and CCTV footage of the bar that will help them seek Mihir’s conviction in the case. The officer said Mihir went to Borivali to drop off his friends after leaving the bar.

The officer said, “Now that the accused has managed to escape, it will be difficult for us to prove that he has consumed alcohol through his blood samples. We will use other evidence that we have collected.”

The victim, identified as Kaveri Nakhwa, was killed when the speeding BMW car owned by the Shinde Sena leader rammed into a two-wheeler on which she was travelling and dragged her on the bonnet for nearly two kilometres before flinging her on the road. A resident of Worli Koliwada, she was heading back with her husband, Pradeep Nakhwa, 50, to sell fish bought from Crawford market. Pradeep was injured in the accident.

Festive offer

“We have learnt that Mihir and his driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, came to Marine Drive for a joy ride, and while returning, he insisted on driving and subsequently rammed into a two-wheeler on the Dr Annie Basant Road in Worli,” said an officer.

The accused then allegedly took the Sea Link to reach Bandra. At the Kalanagar area, the accused dropped the driver, abandoned the car and fled, according to the police.

Rajesh Shah and Bidawat were arrested late on Sunday under the charges of destroying the evidence. “Rajesh and the driver helped Mihir escape while we suspect that they also tried to change or remove the number plate and stickers of the vehicle with an intention to change its identity. They were to be produced before a court on Monday afternoon,” said an officer.
