The first-ever successful kidney transplant operation in Tripura was carried out at the state-run Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala on Monday.
Addressing media persons at the hospital after the five-hour-long operation, Dr Sankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent, GBP Hospital, said, “We have successfully transplanted a kidney donated by the patient’s mother. We signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Manipur’s Shija Hospitals a few days ago. On its basis, the kidney transplantation was done successfully under their mentorship.”
“There are many legal aspects related to such a surgery. We completed all required procedures step by step. The most important thing is that it has to be done under someone or some hospital’s mentorship. So, we started looking for a mentor in the Northeast region and selected Shija Hospitals and Research Institute in Manipur. They agreed to help us on technical grounds,” added Chakraborty.
The patient, 20, along with his parents met CM Dr Manik Saha during his ‘Mukhyamantri Samipeshu’ program, after which the hospital was asked to take the required steps.
The treatment was done free of cost, said Chakraborty.
Dr Gulliver Potsangbam, a nephrologist from Shija Hospitals, who led the operation team, said, “Shija has completed 114 kidney transplants so far. The operation was successful.”
