A joint CPI(M)-Congress delegation on Sunday requested State Election Commission officials in Agartala to allow candidates to submit nomination papers online in the upcoming three-tier panchayat polls in Tripura.
The delegation was headed by veteran CPI(M) leader Pabitra Kar and state Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha.
Kar and Saha alleged that BJP-affiliated groups threaten Opposition leaders to prevail in the elections. “The ruling party is apprehending a loss due to anti-incumbency sentiments in the state. We submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commission to allow submission of nomination through the online mode,” said an Opposition leader.
The joint delegation visit came just a day after Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former minister Sudip Roy Barman said the grand old party’s grassroots-level leaders would decide on the alliance with the Left Front in the panchayat polls.
Meanwhile, State Election Commissioner S Chaudhuri on Sunday said Tripura is likely to go for panchayat elections at the end of July or the first week of August. The polls would be held across 6,370 gram panchayats, 423 seats in 35 panchayat samitis, and 116 seats in eight zilla parishads.
