In a recent interview, celebrity nutritionist Suman Agarwal, the founder of Mishtaa by Suman, known for making delicious healthy mithai, shared that Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt would repeatedly order nolin gud sandesh from her during her pregnancy. She further said that her customers, specifically during the lactation period, prefer to eat gond laddu.

Jaggery, also known as gud in Hindi, is a traditional sweetener made from sugarcane juice. Agarwal highlighted the benefits of consuming jaggery during this crucial period and that each of her recipes contains gud in some form.

Nutritional benefits of jaggery during pregnancy

According to Dr Vinutha G, co-founder and deputy medical director at Athreya Hospital, “Jaggery is a good source of iron, which is crucial during pregnancy for preventing anemia and ensuring healthy blood volume and oxygen supply to the fetus. It also contains magnesium, potassium, and vitamins that support muscle health and energy levels.”

Additionally, unlike refined sugar, she adds,  jaggery retains its minerals and vitamins due to less processing. It provides energy without the rapid blood sugar spikes associated with refined sugar, making it a healthier option for satisfying sweet cravings during pregnancy.

Jaggery can also promote better digestion and prevent constipation, a common issue in pregnancy, due to its dietary fibre content. Some believe it helps cleanse the liver by flushing out toxins, Dr Vinutha says, which could be beneficial during pregnancy for maintaining overall health.

Jaggery is still a form of sugar with a high caloric content, Dr Vinutha reminds, so it should be consumed in moderation, especially if there are concerns about excessive weight gain or gestational diabetes. “Pregnant women should ensure the jaggery they consume is from a clean, reputable source to avoid contaminants that could be harmful to maternal and fetal health,” she recommends.

Eating during pregnancy – A tailored approach

It’s crucial to recognise that dietary needs during pregnancy vary, Dr Vinutha suggests. Factors like pre-existing health conditions, nutritional deficiencies, and pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes play a significant role in determining what foods are best for each individual.

Pregnant women should consult with healthcare providers to develop a personalised nutrition plan. This plan should balance macronutrients and micronutrients to support fetal development and maternal health.

A balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is generally recommended. Incorporating jaggery or any specific food item should be considered within the context of the overall diet.

“While celebrities like Alia Bhatt may share their dietary choices during pregnancy, it’s essential to remember that what works for one person may not be suitable for another. Personal health conditions, dietary restrictions, and nutritional needs should guide dietary choices during pregnancy, not trends or celebrity endorsements,” she says.

While jaggery can offer certain nutritional benefits and be a healthier alternative to refined sugar during pregnancy, Dr Vinutha states, its consumption should be moderated. Pregnant women should focus on a balanced diet tailored to their specific health needs and consult with healthcare professionals for personalised advice.
