For centuries, Kerala has been renowned for its rich tradition of Ayurvedic medicine and natural remedies. Among the many treasured natural products to emerge from this ancient wellness system is Neelibringadi hair oil — a potent, fragrant concoction crafted from a meticulously balanced blend of herbs, flowers, and botanicals.

Revered for its nourishing properties, this oil has been traditionally passed down through generations of Keralite families. But in recent years, Neelibringadi oil has captured the attention of those looking for natural solutions to hair fall, sparking curiosity about its ability to stimulate hair growth and strengthen strands from root to tip.

Key ingredients in Neelibringadi hair oil, and how do they contribute to promoting hair growth

Dr Swetha Sridhar, consultant dermatologist and assistant professor at Lady Curzon and Bowring Hospitals, says, “Neelibringadi hair oil is an Ayurvedic formulation renowned for its blend of natural ingredients, each contributing uniquely to hair health.”

The primary components include:

Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera Linn): This base oil is known for its ability to reduce protein loss in hair, which helps prevent breakage and dryness, promoting stronger and healthier hair.

Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria): Known for its natural dye properties, indigo also supports hair growth and reduces hair fall by balancing the Kapha and Vata doshas.

Festive offer

False Daisy (Eclipta alba Hassk): Often called Bhringaraja, this herb is acclaimed for enhancing hair strength, adding shine, and promoting faster hair growth.

Amla (Emblica officinalis): Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, amla strengthens hair roots, prevents premature greying, and reduces split ends.

Goat Milk (Aja Kshira), Buffalo Milk (Mahishi Kshira), and Cow Milk (Gou Kshira): These milks nourish the scalp and hair, improving overall hair texture and health.

Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn): Known as Yasti Madhu, it helps in combating scalp infections and soothing the scalp.

The effectiveness of Neelibringadi hair oil in stimulating hair growth

While there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence and traditional ayurvedic endorsements supporting the effectiveness of Neelibringadi oil, rigorous scientific studies specifically focused on this formulation are limited, agrees Dr Shridhar.

“However, the individual ingredients have been studied for their benefits. For example, studies have shown that Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba) can stimulate hair growth and reduce hair loss, and coconut oil is well-documented for its protective properties against hair damage,” she explains.

Potential side effects or risks associated with using Neelibringadi hair oil

Neelibringadi hair oil is generally safe for most people, according to Dr Shridhar, but some potential side effects include:

Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may be allergic to specific ingredients in the oil, such as coconut oil or herbs like indigo or liquorice.

Scalp Irritation: For those with sensitive skin, the potent ingredients might cause irritation or redness.

Oily Scalp: Excessive use can lead to an overly oily scalp, which might necessitate more frequent washing.

It is always advisable to do a patch test before using the oil extensively, and consulting with a healthcare provider, especially if you have a known sensitivity to any of the ingredients, can help mitigate risks.
