When Nita Ambani shared the story behind naming twins Isha and Akash: ‘Mukesh was flying over the mountains…’

During the chat, Nita also went down memory lane about how it was her late father-in-law Dhirubhai Ambani who spotted her and tried to play the "matchmaker".

We do not need to introduce you to Isha Ambani and her brother Akash. But did you know how they got their names? Even we did not until we came across a 2009 clip of Nita Ambani talking about the birth of her twin children with ace designers Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla.

Recalling how it was her husband and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani who named them, she said: “I was in the US and he (Mukesh) had returned to India. But on landing, he got a call asking him to get back to the States. So, he, mummy (Kokilaben) and Dr Firoza got on the flight — which is where the pilot announced the news of the arrival of the children — a boy and a girl. All of them were so excited.”

Adding, Nita said that when they met for the first time as parents, they “were deciding the names: What do you name baby boy Ambani and baby girl Ambani?” Nita said on The First Ladies show. That’s when Mukesh Ambani came up with the names. “Mukesh was flying over the mountains when he got the news that we had a baby girl — so, she was named Isha — which means Goddess of the mountains. And because they were in the sky — Akash,” she continued.

During the chat, Nita also went down memory lane about how it was her late father-in-law Dhirubhai Ambani who spotted her and tried to play the “matchmaker“.

“My father-in-law saw me at a dance performance at Mumbai’s Birla Matoshri Sabhaghar. After I got home, I received a phone call that said, ‘I am Dhirubhai Ambani.’ I replied, ‘wrong number’ and put down the phone. The phone rang again and he repeated, ‘I am Dhirubhai Ambani. May I talk to Nita?’ To this I said, ‘If you are Dhirubhai Ambani, I am Elizabeth Taylor’ and put down the phone again,” she narrated.

Festive offer

Continuing, she said that her father — who was at home that day — sensed that something was brewing. “So, when the phone rang, he picked it up. He went a little pale. He said, Nita, pick up the phone and talk — and talk nicely and politely because it is Dhirubhai Ambani. I picked it up and said, Jai Shri Krishna. He (Dhirubhai) said, I am inviting you to my office. I was completely stunned,” shared Nita.

On being asked how and what she was feeling at that time, she said, in their 20s, one isn’t scared about too many things. “I wanted to know what a big man like him would want to meet a 20-year-old girl for. So, when I went to meet him in the office, after the initial pleasant exchanges, he asked me if I would like to meet his son Mukesh. I didn’t know what to say. I think pappa (Dhirubhai) was playing the matchmaker,” shared Nita in the interview.

The next day, Mukesh and Nita met at Usha Kiran — the then residence of the Ambanis, and the rest, as they say, is history.
