Google is reportedly working on AI-powered chatbots based on popular celebrities and popular YouTube influencers. It looks like the tech giant is ripping off a page from companies like Meta and startups like Character.ai, two services with similar offerings.

According to a recent report by The Information, Google’s upcoming chatbots will be powered by the in-house developed large language – Gemini. It goes on to say that the tech giant is trying to bring numerous celebrities and influencers on board and that it will also let users create their very own chatbots, a feature already available to Character.ai users.

However, it is still unclear which celebrities and influencers Google is planning to partner with. The report states that the project is led by a ten people team which also consists of Ryan Germick, an executive who works on the Google Doodles team. Rumour has it that the upcoming feature will be initially available as part of Google Labs.

For those not in the loop, Character.ai is a startup that lets users create their own AI-powered chatbots which can mimic popular celebrities. In November last year, Google was reportedly in talks with Character.ai to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the company.

Meta also launched a similar service last year that lets users talk to celebrities and influencers like Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, MrBeast and Dwayne Wade. However, these chatbots just assume the personalities of fictitious characters instead of bring based on the celebrity’s actual life.
