Maharashtra Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Being one of the states that will go under polling in multiple phases during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Maharatra concluded their 2024 Lok Sabha elections after phase 5 polling on Monday, May 20, 2024. Maharastra recorded a total of 56.89 per cent voter turnout in their final phase, which was their lowest, as the state in their first four phases recorded a total of 63.71, 62.71, 61.44 per cent, and 59.64 per cent, respectively. Maharastra’s numbers were even lower than the national average of 62.20 per cent during phase 5. After all, the 48 constituencies of the state have completed their polling for the 18th Lok Sabha elections; Maharastra had a total overall voter turnout percentage of 60.87 per cent, which is lower than their 2019 numbers of 61.02 per cent. The final results for all the seats will be announced on June 4, as per ECI guidelines.
Maharashtra bears home the second highest number of Lok Sabha seats, which is 48, behind only Uttar Pradesh, which has 80. The state is known for its strong sense of loyalty towards local issues and unpredictability during elections.
Maharashtra is one of those states where registering a landslide victory is a rare occurrence, and with the second highest number of seats in their account, it becomes an important state as it has the potential to decide the winner of any Lok Sabha Elections in clutch situations. Along with multiple state-level parties, Maharashtra is also a stronghold to some of the big National Parties such as BJP, NCP and Congress.
The 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in Maharashtra are scheduled to take place from April 19 to May 20 in five different phases.
Phase 1: Date of polling- April 19
Phase 2: Date of polling- April 26
Phase 3: Date of polling- May 7
Phase 4: Date of polling- May 13
Phase 5: Date of polling- May 20
Although Maharashtra is home to the second highest number of Lok Sabha seats with 48, the elections are generally concluded in the first half of the elections in only four to five phases, and once again ECI has decided to continue the trend in 2024 as the state is all set to open their polling booths on five occasions, i.e., in five phases.
The state of Maharashtra is divided into 48 Lok Sabha constituencies, out of which five seats are reserved for SC candidates, four are reserved for ST candidates and 39 seats are unreserved. In the 2019 elections, BJP won 23 seats, while Shiv Sena registered victory on 18 seats. The two parties were in alliance during the elections, but parted ways later on.
The Uddhav Thackrey-led Shiv Sena fought side by side with BJP in NDA, against Ajit Pawar-led NCP and INC in the 2019 elections, but in a bizarre turn of events, BJP will be going to have support from both Shiv Sena and NCP, while still going up against both of the parties, as the two parties are now bifurcated into two different parties. Shiv Sena is divided into Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde), while NCP is divided into NCP (Ajit Pwaar) and NCP (Sharad Pawar). While the newly formed Shiv Sena and NCP will be a part of NDA alliance, the other Shiv Sena and NCP, will be a part of I.N.D.I.A alliance.
