That’s our own Alison Phillips, PBP co-founder, onstage at the Collision Conference yesterday in Toronto. Alison joined such fellow speakers as Geoffrey Hinton (regarded as the godfather of AI), the mayor of Toronto Olivia Chow, and Connie Loizos, editor in chief of TechCrunch. Collision Conf has quickly become one of the world’s largest tech conferences, and we are thrilled that Alison was asked to speak about PBP’s efforts to digitize the global community of sustainable makers.

The future of wholesale is Powered by People.
About us
Powered by People is a B2B wholesale platform that seamlessly connects makers in 46 countries with buyers in North America & beyond through secure transactions. We want to make ethical, sustainable and social-impact buying easy and risk free. The Creative Manufacturing and Handmade sector is one of the fastest growing global industries, yet it is slowed by communications and digital shortcomings. PBP solves this problem by providing a curated digital marketplace for buyers and makers to conduct business. The benefits are multiple. Buyers are able to customize and purchase products from a highly functional platform on flexible payment terms, leaving the international communication, payment and logistics to us. Makers—from Ghana to India to Guatemala—are able to massively expand their customer base simply by uploading their wares to the Powered by People site. And both makers and buyers can virtually track the manufacturing process every step of the way through our innovative PBP Produce tool. With team members in America, Canada, Kenya, India and Mexico, PBP connects all the dots, providing financing for the makers, facilitating orders and identifying the emerging trends that buyers want on their shelves. And it is the makers, perhaps, who stand to gain the most. When their small businesses thrive, they provide not just for themselves, but their employees, families and communities.

You’ve probably heard us mention, on more than a few occasions, that our wholesale marketplace boasts more than 700 makers from 70+ countries. But have you ever wondered where the majority of those makers come from? This map, lifted from the pages of PBP’s first Sustainability Report, provides some answers, country by country. Welcome to Powered by People (PBP)'s first sustainability report. It’s a work that has (quite literally) been years in the making. We started PBP in 2021 with a purpose—to provide a platform for authentic and meaningful products, and to help sustain those makers who create them. Sustainability is more than a goal, it’s what we do. And starting now, we are able to share with you our efforts, our goals, our successes and our challenges. Over the course of 37 pages, we delve into our PBP Verified program, we chronicle the growth of our makers, explore the difficulties of global shipping and logistics, grapple with our impact on climate, speak to our buyers and spotlight our philanthropic partners. We are particularly grateful to our partners at Equiception Business and Human Rights, a mission-driven ESG consulting group whose guidance and hard work have been invaluable to us and made this report possible. The remote community off the coast of Newfoundland relied on the fishing industry to sustain itself. But when overfishing crippled its way of life in the early 1990s, the Canadian government stepped in, putting plans in place to relocate the island’s 11 communities to mainland Canada. But Instead of driving locals away from Fogo, what if Fogo could attract visitors? That was the premise behind the Fogo Island Inn, a stunning 29-room structure, designed by Newfoundland-born architect Todd Saunders. The inn took eight years to construct and opened in 2013. It now serves as the hub for a network of mini-industries, all of which employ Fogo residents. The inn isn’t some mansion on the hill—it is the engine that drives the island’s evolving, connected community. To learn how Fogo survived—and now thrives—read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gvDh-fiJ
