    Elvis

theres a moment where austin butler as elvis puts on a record of an elvis song- i cant remember which - and my partner, who was half-watching, asked me why on earth they did that. "oh well," i said generously, "it's diagetic, he's putting a record on in the scene, so it makes sense it isnt elvis' recording."

    "that's kacey musgrave," they said.

    The Boss Baby

i dont know how to describe the relationship i have to The Boss Baby. i love bad animated films (see my list) and my favorite time to watch them is on a plane ride. something about the slight discomfort and tiny, tinny screen experience really elevates it.

Boss Baby is a terrible movie. it did make me cry. it has an absolutely baffling spin off series that cant decide if its audience is children or retired reaganites. there's something here…

at some point "enjoying the minions" became a core part of my identity and now loved ones frequently gift me minions memorabilia. i dont actually hate it.

here's the thing: theyre weird funny little yellow guys designed to Make Money. theyre awful. boomers love them. something about that really works for me. banana

aronofsky is definitely a problematic fave for me 🤷

i loved the staging of this movie- the set, the cinematic choices. what i didnt love is the length- the back 30 minutes felt unnecessary and took away from the poignancy. it just gets sort of sloppy at the end, which is a shame because i love the absurdist escalation of it all.

    ★★★

my brother and i stumbled upon immortal ad vitam in high school & have rewatched it together once every couple of years since. the quantic dream Touch™️ in the computer generated elements really adds a grotesque element to the surreality- in a way it works better than if the cgi was actually good, because it really sells the film's idea of disconnect from the natural in favor of augmented humanity.

that aside, what the fuck is even going on. we've got…
