From Rizz to Gyatt to SMH. Slang is a huge part of the way #genz and #genalpha communicate online. We've compiled a slang dictionary to help #parents and #teachers decode the forbidden language of youth. Kids online safety is a serious topic, communication between kids and parents is key, but that didn't stop us from having a bit of fun with the task of creating a comprehensive dictionary. We've also created a fun little questionnaire to help parents and grandparents (grown ups) test their knowledge. Link in first comment.

Should social media platforms come with warning labels? If you think otherwise comment below. ⚠️ The recent recommendation by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy to include warning labels on social media platforms highlights a growing concern about the negative impact of social media on the mental health of teenagers. 😨 This suggestion follows an increasing body of research indicating a significant decline in mental health among U.S. teens, often linked to social media usage. ☝️ CONTEXT Rising Mental Health Concerns! There has been a notable rise in mental health issues among teenagers in the United States over the past decade. Reports indicate increases in depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts among teens, which some experts attribute to the pervasive use of social media. Research Findings! Various studies have found correlations between heavy social media use and negative mental health outcomes. These include disrupted sleep patterns, exposure to cyberbullying, unrealistic comparisons to others, and increased feelings of isolation. Policy Responses! In response to these concerns, there have been calls for greater regulation and oversight of social media platforms. The idea of adding warning labels is akin to health warnings on cigarette packs, meant to inform users of potential risks associated with usage. ✍️ SURGEON GENERAL’s RECCOMENDATIONS Dr. Vivek Murthy's recommendation aims to increase awareness about the potential mental health risks of social media. This move is part of a broader effort to promote mental well-being and ensure that young people and their parents are more informed about the possible negative impacts of excessive social media use. 🏃 CHALLENGES AND IMPLICATIONS Implementation! Adding warning labels to social media platforms would require cooperation from tech companies. This may face resistance due to concerns about user engagement and advertising revenue. Effectiveness! The effectiveness of such labels in changing behavior is uncertain. While warning labels on tobacco products have had some impact, it remains to be seen if similar measures on social media would significantly alter usage patterns among teens. Broader Strategies! This recommendation is likely to be part of a larger strategy to address teen mental health, including promoting digital literacy, encouraging healthy online habits, and providing better access to mental health resources. 💬 CONCLUSION The suggestion to include Surgeon General’s warnings on social media platforms reflects a growing recognition of the serious impact these platforms can have on teen mental health. While the implementation and effectiveness of such a measure are still subjects of debate, it represents a proactive step towards addressing an urgent public health issue. As this conversation evolves, it will be crucial to consider a multi-faceted approach that includes education, regulation, and support to effectively support the mental well-being of young people.

🔈 Utah has launched a second lawsuit against TikTok, accusing the popular social media platform of knowingly operating "in part like a virtual strip club" and facilitating the sexual exploitation of young users. The lawsuit focuses on TikTok Live, a feature that allows users to livestream videos of themselves while viewers can send them money. 👏 Good to see steps being taken to protect social media users, especially young people by local governments. How do you feel about TikTok? Full story here: https://lnkd.in/gy9jv7ye
