a great idea to check your preferred gender if you so desire. This is
the survey that gives us the gender gap percentage in Wikipedia. I'd
love to see if the dial has moved at all since the past two years (where
it's virtually been approximately 9% over all languages).

Hi all,
we have just launched the Foundation's 2012 editor survey; with
invitations to participate being shown to logged-in users on Wikipedia
and Commons.
A few quick facts about the survey (for more refer to
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_Editor_Survey_2012
):
* This is the third survey of editors as envisaged in the Foundation's
2010-15 strategic plan "in order to take the pulse of the community
and identify pressing issues or concerns", after the April 2011 and
December 2011 surveys.
* The first main purpose of this survey is to continue the work of the
2011 studies (conducted by Mani Pande and Ayush Khanna), with a focus
on tracking changes since last year and identifying trends.
Which is why many questions are being repeated from last time.
* The second emphasis in this instance of the survey is to measure the
satisfaction of the editing community with the work of the Wikimedia
Foundation.
* This is the first editor survey that includes a non-Wikipedia
project (Commons, for the questions that are non Wikipedia-specific).
* Thanks to everyone who commented on the draft questionnaire after we
solicited feedback on this list and in and IRC office hour, as well as
to those who commented about the last survey. We made several changes
based on the feedback, and tried to reply to all concerns.
* Also many thanks to all volunteer translators who reviewed or
contributed translations; the questionnaire is available in 14
languages (Italian, Polish and Portuguese will launch a bit later).
* As with the previous two surveys, the results will be published in
the following forms: A "topline" report detailing the percentage of
responses for each question, a series of posts on
https://blog.wikimedia.org analyzing the results, and a data set
consisting of anonymized responses which others can use to do their
own analyses. This time we will also aim to produce language-specific
topline reports (an approach we already tested for Chinese with the
data from the December 2011 survey).

The mood was high and the conversation passed in waves across the table
when I entered an airy conference room at the Solidarity House in
Stockholm, Sweden. A group of people was participating in the "Writing

which took place on Wednesday, October 16. That day I learned that on
the Swedish Wikipedia <https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Huvudsida>,
there are four men for every woman who are portrayed at Wikipedia. While
this gap is slowly decreasing, it takes a lot of work to change it.

As I expanded an article that another woman on the other side of the
table just created in Swedish--about Yahoo!'s president Marissa
Mayer--my brain creaked with effort, in a good way. Then I felt it: the
wings of history, and when the article was updated, I was so proud!
Despite its small mistakes, I was reassured by the the understanding
that someone else will take over, perhaps more experienced than me, and
expand the article! That's the beauty of Wikipedia.
Among the many discussions we had as we edited, as a gender expert I was
particularly interested in questions of the use of the Swedish terms
"masculine" and "feminine." In the English Wikipedia article for Mayer,
it says she was Google's "first female engineer." How should I best
translate that? In Swedish, we don't have the perfect word for "female;"
in Swedish "hona" refers to animals. So should I translate it as "A
woman and an engineer?" or "Feminine engineer?" Is it even important to
have this debate? Would anyone write "the first male engineer" for
Google's first employed engineer? Of course not. It is historically
significant when the first woman enters a previously male-dominated area
-- and there's the context!
In the categories for Wikipedia articles, it seems that the Swedish
Wikipedia has solved the problem well: you can search for people by
category:women <http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategori:Kvinnor> or
category:men <http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategori:M%C3%A4n>. In
English, "Mathematician <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematician>" is
generally about the mathematician, and there is a special subcategory on
"Women in mathematics." Not at all an optimal solution where women are
anomalous and a subcategory of the implied main category: men.
As for the article in question, I strongly opposed the use of the
Swedish "feminine" as an alternative to the English "female." I sought
advice in the Wikipedia style guide that evening, and I turned the whole
article upside down and felt very proud when I came up with a nifty
solution: "the first engineer who was also not a man." This made me
wonder how Wikipedians had written about men earlier. Do men get their
personal life pointed out in their stories? Does anyone have the honor
of being named as the "first man" in a given field? If you search for
this in the Swedish Wikipedia, the result is striking. Over 800 hits

the phrase the "first woman" and a paltry 24 hits

When men are the first to do something, is it not notable or
interesting? Or the areas where women were first, are these the ones
worth noting?
Our notions of gender and norms are extremely difficult to see without
an outside perspective. Does Wikipedia's accuracy suffer from the skewed
gender distribution among its editors? There are many men who are
editing; do they realize that they and society are more familiar with a
canon consisting of men and therefore are unreflective about the gender
dimension? Do they think about their motivations for selecting what
items they translate, create or expand?
I think it's good that we focus on the Wikipedia gender gap and try to
improve it with initiatives like the events organized around Ada
Lovelace Day. They increase awareness among Wikipedia editors of their
own gender blindness related to what is important on Wikipedia. Our
event was a success in numbers: we created or expanded over 20 articles;
and I have now made myself a user name. It was also important because it
encouraged interesting and instructive discussions.
For example, on the talk page about our project

Wikipedia, someone argued that it is problematic to say that women are
"underrepresented," that more men have meant something to the world's
history and that Wikipedia should be "gender neutral." Clearly uneven
historical narratives do not mean that women are less important to
history, nor should Wikipedians be comfortable with this situation. We
need to be a modern and knowledgeable group of contributors!
Alas, the morning after the event, I saw that the sentence that I
edited, "the first engineer who was not also not a man" was changed back
to "feminine engineer." I immediately felt the desire to argue my case,
which you can follow on the talk page of the Marissa Mayer
<http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marissa_Mayer> article. We debated the
issue and made further edits, finally coming up with a pretty good
solution: "In 1999, Mayer was first woman to gain employment as an
engineer at Google."
I suppose only by continuing to edit and debate these issues will we
decrease the gender gap on Wikipedia.

Att skapa nya sidor eller uppdatera redan befintliga är ett jobb som
kräver mycket av en som person. Även om de som är där från den svenska
Wikipedia-organisationen håller modet uppe och påpekar att varje litet
steg har betydelse. Visst kan man göra små steg och vara nöjd med det,
men det kräver fortfarande en viss känsla för stil.
Du ska ha en känsla för språket, det där uppslagsverksspråket. Man
känner sig lite högtravande ibland, men jag förstår att det krävs för
att ha en viss kvalitet. Du ska också ha en känsla för
intressekonflikter, källkritik, prioriteringar och referensmaterial. Vad
är väsentligt i just denna kontext?
Min hjärna knakar av ansträngningen, på ett bra sätt. När jag sitter där
och utökar en artikel, som en annan kvinna på andra sidan bordet precis
introducerat på svenska, om Yahoo!:s VD Marissa Mayer, så känner jag
det: historiens vingslag fläktar till och när artikeln är uppdaterad så
är jag så stolt! Trots dess små fel och brister. Jag blir lugnad av de
mer erfarna: någon annan kommer att ta vid! Det är ju det som är det
fina med Wikipedia.
Men diskussionerna är många och en sak som jag som jämställdhetsexpert
fastnar vid är en diskussion om användningen av svenskans "manligt" och
"kvinnligt". På engelska står det "first female engineer" och hur
översätter man det bäst? Det svenska "hona" handlar ju om djurs
könstillhörighet. Kvinna och ingenjör? Kvinnlig ingenjör? Är det ens
väsentligt? Skulle det stå den "första manliga ingenjören" på Googles
första anställda ingenjör, underförstått man? Självklart inte. Det är
det historiskt väsentliga som har tyngd -- kontexten!
I "kategorier" verkar den svenska Wikipedia ha löst det bra: du kan söka
på personer utifrån kategori:kvinnor

mig att undra över hur man har skrivit om män, får deras personliga liv
plats i deras karriärer? Är det någon som får äran att bli benämnd som
den "första mannen"? Söker man på detta så är resultatet slående över
800 träffar på "första kvinnliga

Är männen aldrig först? Eller dokumenterar vi inte de områden där
kvinnorna var först?
Genus handlar om våra föreställningar om kön och normerna kring detta är
oerhört svåra att se utan ett utifrånperspektiv. Av denna anledning,
lider Wikipedia av sin i dagsläget sneda könsfördelning bland
redigerare? Det är betydligt fler män som redigerar, kanske reflekterar
de inte över att de och samhället är mer bekanta med en kanon bestående
av män? Låter man oreflekterat lusten styra vilka artiklar man
översätter, skapar eller utökar? Det är bra att sådana här initiativ tas
och att det tas just kring Ada Lovelace-dagen. Det ökar medvetenheten om
redigerarens egen könsblindhet inför vad som är viktigt att dokumentera
på Wikipedia. Kvällen blir en succé! I siffror blev resultatet över 20
nya artiklar eller utökade artiklar och förstås så har jag nu skapat mig
ett användarnamn också. Det var också en viktig tillställning för att
det uppmuntrade intressanta och nödvändiga samtal.
Diskussionen i Projekt:kvinnor

samma stund nedslående. Någon säger att det är problematiskt att säga
att kvinnor är "underrepresenterade". Man hänvisar till att Wikipedia
ska vara "könsneutralt" och att fler män har betytt någon för historien.
Självklart är inte en ojämn historieskrivning detsamma som att kvinnor
inte är lika viktiga som män ur ett historiskt perspektiv, inte heller
ska Wikipedia-redigerarna nöja sig med den analysen. Vi måste vara en så
pass modern och kunnig sammanslutning så att vi gemensamt kan acceptera
detta faktum -- och komplettera!
På morgonen efter ser jag att meningen jag redigerat med resultatet:
"ingenjör som inte också var man" är ändrad igen. Nu till "kvinnlig
ingenjör". Jag känner genast viljan att argumentera för saken, följ
gärna diskussionen på Marissa Mayer

och i skrivandets stund tycker jag att vi gemensamt kommit fram till en
ganska bra lösning: "1999 blev Mayer första kvinna att få anställning

redigeringar -- på så sätt kommer vi att minska könsglappet på Wikipedia.

In the parallel-issues department, here’s an interesting narrative in Slate by Rebecca Watson about the experiences of herself and other women with sexism offline and on in the skeptic/atheist community.

underrepresented community voice: feminist academics [...] and “it was
exasperating trying to change larger passages of often erroneous
information.” Compared to other academic profiles there was an abnormal
amount of information about her personal life. “There was poking at her
family background, with elements of anti-Semitism, and mention of her
mother, and her failed relationships, which just felt like woman-shaming to
