🌎 Estimates predict that 106 billion people have been born since the dawn of humanity. That means the 8.1 billion people alive today 👉 represent roughly 6% of all the people who have ever lived on our planet. 👥 As we mark #WorldPopulationDay, it's crucial to reflect on the impact of our growing global population on our planet's resources and ecosystems. In 2022, the world reached a population of 8 billion, and by 2050 📈 it's projected to reach 9.7 billion. This year, India 🇮🇳 has already surpassed China 🇨🇳 as the world's most populous country. The top three most populous countries now are India, China, and the United States 🇺🇸. Fast-growing regions like sub-Saharan Africa are driving much of this increase. Countries such as Nigeria, Congo, and Ethiopia will see significant growth, which underscores the urgent need for #sustainable solutions. Join us in celebrating World Population Day by reflecting on these impacts and considering how we can contribute to a sustainable future 🌱

✈️💨 Have you ever wondered what those trails in the sky are? These white lines, called #contrails, are left by airplanes and significantly impact the climate. They form when engine water vapor condenses and freezes into ice crystals While they may seem harmless, these trails trap heat in the atmosphere, contributing to global warming and altering #climate patterns. To address this, Estuaire, part of Satgana's portfolio, together with KPMG, developed the Contrail Opportunity Index, proposing alternative flight routes and optimized cruising altitudes to reduce contrail formation and mitigate climate impact. Some numbers: 👉 Contrails significantly contribute to #globalwarming, with just 2.9% of flights generating 80% of the total radiative forcing effect of contrails. This presents a huge opportunity for airlines to make substantial climate savings with minimal fuel penalties by rerouting only a small number of flights. 👉 The potential for climate benefit is enormous. Aviation CO2 emissions are at 868 MtCO2, with contrails contributing an additional 155 MtCO2e in global warming potential over 100 years (GWP100). By focusing on contrail reduction, airlines can achieve substantial environmental impact with strategic changes. So, what actions can we take now? 🔹Integrate contrail mitigation in flight dispatch logic 🔹Monitor contrails and emissions on a flight-by-flight basis 🔹Adjust flight schedules to avoid afternoon departures 🔹Use Sustainable Aviation Fuel for contrail-prone flights Want to learn more? “AI's transformative potential for sustainability and economic development in developing countries is immense.” We interviewed Kate Kallot who founded a company, Amini, to address the shortage of trustworthy, inexpensive environmental data for Africa. She stresses that although #AI offers the potential to drive unprecedented development and #sustainability, the concern that it might exacerbate inequalities is very real. Time magazine rated her one of the 100 most influential people in AI in 2023.
