Recent changes
- The wikis that have Growth features deployed have been part of A/B testing since deployment, in which some newcomers did not receive the new features. Now, all of the newcomers on 21 of the smallest of those wikis will be receiving the features. [1]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In 2017, the provided jQuery library was upgraded from version 1 to 3, with a compatibility layer. The migration will soon finish, to make the site load faster for everyone. If you maintain a gadget or user script, check if you have any JQMIGRATE errors and fix them, or they will break. [2][3]
- Last year, the Portuguese Wikipedia community embarked on an experiment to make log-in compulsory for editing. The impact report of this trial is ready. Moving forward, the Anti-Harassment Tools team is looking for projects that are willing to experiment with restricting IP editing on their wiki for a short-term experiment. Learn more.

The 2022 Community Wishlist Survey will happen in January
Hello everyone,
We hope all of you are as well and safe as possible during these trying times! We wanted to share some news about a change to the Community Wishlist Survey 2022. We would like to hear your opinions as well.
Summary:
We will be running the Community Wishlist Survey 2022 in January 2022. We need more time to work on the 2021 wishes. We also need time to prepare some changes to the Wishlist 2022. In the meantime, you can use a dedicated sandbox to leave early ideas for the 2022 wishes.
Proposing and wish-fulfillment will happen during the same year
In the past, the Community Tech team has run the Community Wishlist Survey for the following year in November of the prior year. For example, we ran the Wishlist for 2021 in November 2020. That worked well a few years ago. At that time, we used to start working on the Wishlist soon after the results of the voting were published.
However, in 2021, there was a delay between the voting and the time when we could start working on the new wishes. Until July 2021, we were working on wishes from the Wishlist for 2020.
We hope having the Wishlist 2022 in January 2022 will be more intuitive. This will also give us time to fulfill more wishes from the 2021 Wishlist.
Encouraging wider participation from historically excluded communities
We are thinking how to make the Wishlist easier to participate in. We want to support more translations, and encourage under-resourced communities to be more active. We would like to have some time to make these changes.
A new space to talk to us about priorities and wishes not granted yet
We will have gone 365 days without a Wishlist. We encourage you to approach us. We hope to hear from you in the talk page, but we also hope to see you at our bi-monthly Talk to Us meetings! These will be hosted at two different times friendly to time zones around the globe.
We will begin our first meeting September 15th at 23:00 UTC. More details about the agenda and format coming soon!
Brainstorm and draft proposals before the proposal phase
If you have early ideas for wishes, you can use the new Community Wishlist Survey sandbox. This way, you will not forget about these before January 2022. You will be able to come back and refine your ideas. Remember, edits in the sandbox don't count as wishes!
Feedback
- What should we do to improve the Wishlist pages?
- How would you like to use our new sandbox?
- What, if any, risks do you foresee in our decision to change the date of the Wishlist 2022?
- What will help more people participate in the Wishlist 2022?
Answer on the talk page (in any language you prefer) or at our Talk to Us meetings.
Results for the 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2021 Board election. The Elections Committee has reviewed the votes of the 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election, organized to select four new trustees. A record 6,873 people from across 214 projects cast their valid votes. The following four candidates received the most support:
- Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight
- Victoria Doronina
- Dariusz Jemielniak
- Lorenzo Losa
While these candidates have been ranked through the community vote, they are not yet appointed to the Board of Trustees. They still need to pass a successful background check and meet the qualifications outlined in the Bylaws. The Board has set a tentative date to appoint new trustees at the end of this month.

Proposal: discontinue Tech News to this board
I propose to delete the Tech News here without archiving it and also support the unsubscription of this to this board. It is overwhelming this board with frequency and amount of content. It is also not on-topic, as this is a Wikisource general discussion board.
This board is one of hundreds of targets for these news announcements, so people have other options for getting news. Mostly two kinds of users are at this board: experienced Wikimedia editors who know how to access news elsewhere, and less experienced Wikimedia editors who are not looking for archives of news updates.
Support Bluerasberry (talk) 20:32, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- Comment, Why not just have separate places for these news? Tech News contains things like announcements of server switches and technical features that can be beneficial for Wikisource, an example of a better alternative to deleting would be creating something like "Wikisource:Scriptorium/Announcements" which is linked prominently above and only contains this month's (or only six months or a year, depending on how much news / automated messages are actually placed here) announcements and newsletters, while the main Scriptorium could then be exclusively used for community discussions and urgent announcements (exclusively related to Wikisource) free from all the clutter. Note: I am not a frequent contributor here, I just read this website. -- Donald Trung/徵國單 (討論 🀄) (方孔錢 💴) 12:46, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
I would say No. It should be found by the users. What we can do is to archive the tech news more frequently, might be in a special archive like Tech Archive or something like this. -jkb- (talk) 17:59, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
Once more: what shall we do wit this? Both alternatives are possible. -jkb- (talk) 21:42, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
Advice for multilingual text - Popul Vul - Mayan language
I have this text in various forms including scanned images and digital text.
The original text is in both en:Kʼicheʼ language and Spanish, but I may also have access to translations with Wikimedia compatible copyright.
Here are my questions:
- Which language version Wikisource is the right place for central management of this? The original publication contains the full text in K'iche and Spanish.
- Can someone point me to a good example of a text in Wikisource which also has translations? I want to see how Wikisource links translations of texts across languages.
- K'iche script is unique and has an ISO code. Can anyone tell me if Wikisource can already handle text in that script?
- If K'iche is not already set up...
- How complicated is it to import an ISO code?
- Can I start engaging with the text before setting up the script, or is there some reason why I should sort the script import in Wikisource first?
- Can someone else check to confirm that this text is either not already in Wikisource, or otherwise, confirm that I can just start playing around with an upload?
- I found es:Popol Vuh but I am not sure which version of text this is or what the source is.
Thanks. Please no one put too much effort into answering these questions. I am still exploring options, and just want casual thoughts at this time. Bluerasberry (talk) 20:47, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- It is not common here, but we have Hail Mary here for example. -jkb- (talk) 09:39, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, that is helpful. Bluerasberry (talk) 16:24, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- my pleasure :-) -jkb- (talk) 16:34, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, that is helpful. Bluerasberry (talk) 16:24, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- As far as I know, MediaWiki can handle any Unicode text, so adding text in K'iche script should be no problem as long as it uses Unicode (but what else would it use in 2021?). This doesn’t ensure that readers will be able to read it, though, but it depends on fonts installed on their computers, for which you/we can only add advice. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 17:26, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
Call for Candidates for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee ending 14 September 2021
Movement Strategy announces the Call for Candidates for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee. The Call opens August 2, 2021 and closes September 14, 2021.
The Committee is expected to represent diversity in the Movement. Diversity includes gender, language, geography, and experience. This comprises participation in projects, affiliates, and the Wikimedia Foundation.
English fluency is not required to become a member. If needed, translation and interpretation support is provided. Members will receive an allowance to offset participation costs. It is US$100 every two months.
We are looking for people who have some of the following skills:
- Know how to write collaboratively. (demonstrated experience is a plus)
- Are ready to find compromises.
- Focus on inclusion and diversity.
- Have knowledge of community consultations.
- Have intercultural communication experience.
- Have governance or organization experience in non-profits or communities.
- Have experience negotiating with different parties.
The Committee is expected to start with 15 people. If there are 20 or more candidates, a mixed election and selection process will happen. If there are 19 or fewer candidates, then the process of selection without election takes place.
Will you help move Wikimedia forward in this important role? Submit your candidacy here. Please contact strategy2030 wikimedia.org with questions.
Server switch
Read this message in another language • Please help translate to your language
The Wikimedia Foundation tests the switch between its first and secondary data centers. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster. To make sure everything is working, the Wikimedia Technology department needs to do a planned test. This test will show if they can reliably switch from one data centre to the other. It requires many teams to prepare for the test and to be available to fix any unexpected problems.
They will switch all traffic back to the primary data center on Tuesday, 14 September 2021.
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.
- You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Tuesday, 14 September 2021. The test will start at 14:00 UTC (07:00 PDT, 10:00 EDT, 15:00 WEST/BST, 16:00 CEST, 19:30 IST, 23:00 JST, and in New Zealand at 02:00 NZST on Wednesday, 15 September).
- If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.
Other effects:
- Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
- We expect the code deployments to happen as any other week. However, some case-by-case code freezes could punctually happen if the operation require them afterwards.

Working with other websites (an online library of religious texts)
While I frequent Wikisource as a reader I don't edit here, so I am quite curious if there are any efforts to reach out to entire websites to import them. While researching religion in South Vietnam I recently found a website called Sacret-Texts.com, they seem to know a lot about US copyright and try to make sure that as much as possible on their website is in the public domain. This website seems like "a perfect match" for Wikisource, is it already being used as a source? Is it useful or do the actual texts need to be available and not just online transcriptions? --Donald Trung (talk) 12:41, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
- I'm afraid you must ask at the vietnamese Wikisource. Cheers, -jkb- (talk) 17:05, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
- These are all in English though. -- Donald Trung/徵國單 (討論 🀄) (方孔錢 💴) 07:58, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Donald Trung: English texts should go to English Wikisource. Here is primarily a place for texts without their own linguistic domain (or free in US, but not free in the country of origin if not accepted in their linguistic domain). Ankry (talk) 17:07, 7 November 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- 45 new Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. [4]
- A majority of Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. The Growth team has published an FAQ page about the features. This translatable FAQ covers the description of the features, how to use them, how to change the configuration, and more.
Problems
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 14 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. [5]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 September. It will be on all wikis from 16 September (calendar).
- Starting this week, Wikipedia in Italian will receive weekly software updates on Wednesdays. It used to receive the updates on Thursdays. Due to this change, bugs will be noticed and fixed sooner. [6]
- You can add language links in the sidebar in the new Vector skin again. You do this by connecting the page to a Wikidata item. The new Vector skin has moved the language links but the new language selector cannot add language links yet. [7]
- The syntax highlight tool marks up code with different colours. It now can highlight 23 new code languages. Additionally,
golang
can now be used as an alias for the Go programming language, and a specialoutput
mode has been added to show a program's output. [8][9]

Asking for delete
The book I currently working Index:ရွှေဘုံနိဒါန်း.pdf is same as ရွှေဘုံနိဒါန်း. Can I make a request to delete ရွှေဘုံနိဒါန်း ? P0rnytail (talk) 15:00, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- @P0rnytail: Why would we? The goal of proofreading is to eventually transclude the proofread text in the main namespace; the Index and Page namespaces are behind-the-scenes stuff. Instead of deleting, just overwrite the content with the <pages/> tag transcluding the proofread text when you’re done with the proofreading. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:41, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- So, I should move my text to that page after completed. Is that right? If so, what is the role of PDF file on WikiCommons? Should I request to delete that after all the previous stuff done? P0rnytail (talk) 16:48, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- No, you should transclude it with the wikicode
<pages index="ရွှေဘုံနိဒါန်း.pdf" from="3" to="119" />
(assuming that Page:ရွှေဘုံနိဒါန်း.pdf/3 is the first and Page:ရွှေဘုံနိဒါန်း.pdf/119 is the last page containing actual content); obviously this requires that you don’t request deleting any content. There are two purposes of uploading PDFs to Commons: first, it helps the digitization of the book (people without access to a physical copy can help, and you can more easily work in smaller chunks, e.g. digitize one page at a time); second, they serve as a source, anyone can check if the Wikisource text matches the original work. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 18:40, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

- MediaWiki had a feature that would highlight local links to short articles in a different style. Each user could pick the size at which "stubs" would be highlighted. This feature was very bad for performance, and following a consultation, has been removed. [10]
- A technical change was made to the MonoBook skin to allow for easier maintenance and upkeep. This has resulted in some minor changes to HTML that make MonoBook's HTML consistent with other skins. Efforts have been made to minimize the impact on editors, but please ping Jon (WMF) on wiki or in phabricator if any problems are reported.
Problems
- There was a problem with search last week. Many search requests did not work for 2 hours because of an accidental restart of the search servers. [11]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 September. It will be on all wikis from 23 September (calendar).
- The meta=proofreadpage API has changed. The
piprop
parameter has been renamed toprpiprop
. API users should update their code to avoid unrecognized parameter warnings. Pywikibot users should upgrade to 6.6.0. [12]
Future changes
- The Reply tool will be deployed to the remaining wikis in the coming weeks. It is currently part of "Discussion tools" in Beta features at most wikis. You will be able to turn it off in Editing Preferences. [13]
- The previously announced change to how you obtain tokens from the API has been delayed to September 21 because of an incompatibility with Pywikibot. Bot operators using Pywikibot can follow T291202 for progress on a fix, and should plan to upgrade to 6.6.1 when it is released.

Movement Charter Drafting Committee - Community Elections to take place October 11 - 24
Dear fellow Wikimedians,
This is an update from the Movement Charter process. We have closed the call for candidates on September 14 for the Drafting Committee and now have a pool of candidates with diverse backgrounds to choose from. As the number of candidates is quite large and thus informing yourself about them might be a bit more complicated, we want to try something different this time: an “Election Compass", more about it in this page.
The 15 member committee will be selected with a 3-step process:
- Election process for project communities to elect 7 members of the committee.
- Selection process for affiliates to select 6 members of the committee.
- Wikimedia Foundation process to appoint 2 members of the committee.
- Communities elect 7 members
- This announcement is related to the community elections, which will take place in a time period of 2 weeks from October 11 to October 24. We look forward to a wide participation across the communities to create the committee to curate the writing of the Movement Charter. The Election Results will be published on November 1.
- Affiliates select 6 members
- Parallel to the election process, all affiliates asked to contribute as well: All affiliates were divided into eight geographic and one ‘thematic’ region (check the list), and each region chooses one person who will act as a selector for that region. These 9 selectors will come together to select 6 of the committee (from the same pool of candidates). The selection results will be published on November 1.
- Wikimedia Foundation appoints 2 members
- Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation will appoint two members to the committee by November 1.
All three processes will be concluded by November 1, 2021, so that the Movement Charter Drafting Committee can start working by then.
For the full context of the Movement Charter, its role, as well the process for its creation, please have a look at Meta. You can also contact us at any time on Telegram or via email (wikimedia2030@wikimedia.org).

Author Pages
Can anybody provide me with a list of "template" etc pages I need to download / translate in order to create "Author Pages" to Cy-Wikisource, at the moment I'm using the "category pages" to include author details, which is where the author line in transclusion pages goes. But I would prefer dedicated pages, but can't work out how to create them or link to them to them AlwynapHuw (talk) 02:09, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- iOS 15 has a new function called Private Relay (Apple website). This can hide the user's IP when they use Safari browser. This is like using a VPN in that we see another IP address instead. It is opt-in and only for those who pay extra for iCloud. It will come to Safari users on OSX later. There is a technical discussion about what this means for the Wikimedia wikis.
Problems
- Some gadgets and user-scripts add items to the portlets (article tools) part of the skin. A recent change to the HTML may have made those links a different font-size. This can be fixed by adding the CSS class
.vector-menu-dropdown-noicon
. [14]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 September. It will be on all wikis from 30 September (calendar).
- The GettingStarted extension was built in 2013, and provides an onboarding process for new account holders in a few versions of Wikipedia. However, the recently developed Growth features provide a better onboarding experience. Since the vast majority of Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features, GettingStarted will be deactivated starting on 4 October. [15]
- A small number of users will not be able to connect to the Wikimedia wikis after 30 September. This is because an old root certificate will no longer work. They will also have problems with many other websites. Users who have updated their software in the last five years are unlikely to have problems. Users in Europe, Africa and Asia are less likely to have immediate problems even if their software is too old. You can read more.
- You can receive notifications when someone leaves a comment on user talk page or mentions you in a talk page comment. Clicking the notification link will now bring you to the comment and highlight it. Previously, doing so brought you to the top of the section that contained the comment. You can find more information in T282029.
Future changes
- The Reply tool will be deployed to the remaining wikis in the coming weeks. It is currently part of "Discussion tools" in Beta features at most wikis. You will be able to turn it off in Editing Preferences. See the list of wikis. [16]

Recent changes
- A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them has been enabled for the following 10 wikis: mediawiki.org, the Italian, Catalan, Hebrew and Vietnamese Wikipedias, French Wikisource, and English Wikivoygage, Wikibooks, Wiktionary and Wikinews. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist on those wikis you can let the developers know.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 October. It will be on all wikis from 7 October (calendar).
- Some gadgets and bots that use the API to read the AbuseFilter log might break. The
hidden
property will no longer say an entry isimplicit
for unsuppressed log entries about suppressed edits. If your bot needs to know this, do a separate revision query. Additionally, the property will have the valuefalse
for visible entries; previously, it wasn't included in the response. [17] - A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them will be enabled for all production wikis. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist you can let the developers know.
Future changes
- You can soon get cross-wiki notifications in the iOS Wikipedia app. You can also get notifications as push notifications. More notification updates will follow in later versions. [18]
- The JavaScript variables
wgExtraSignatureNamespaces
,wgLegalTitleChars
, andwgIllegalFileChars
will soon be removed frommw.config
. These are not part of the "stable" variables available for use in wiki JavaScript. [19] - The JavaScript variables
wgCookiePrefix
,wgCookieDomain
,wgCookiePath
, andwgCookieExpiration
will soon be removed from mw.config. Scripts should instead usemw.cookie
from the "mediawiki.cookie" module. [20]

Remove main namespace from wgExtraSignatureNamespaces
I am planning to remove the main namespace from the wgExtraSignatureNamespaces configuration setting on this wiki. I think this will have very little impact, but letting you know just in case. For more context, see task T291630 (although I'm happy to reply here if you have any questions).
Currently, that configuration setting affects:
- Whether there is a "Signature and timestamp" button on the editing toolbar in that namespace
- Whether DiscussionTools's reply tool and new topic tool are available in that namespace
It was configured that way in 2014 for all "special" wikis (basically, anything other than the Wikimedia projects with multiple language versions), on the assumption that they often have discussions, including their "village pump" equivalent, in [main namespace]. This doesn't seem correct for this wiki. We're planning to use that config setting for future discussion-related features, and it would probably be unexpected if they showed up in the main namespace here.
Please let me know if there's any problem with this. Thanks. Matma Rex (talk) 18:36, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Proposal: discontinue Tech News to this board 2
New beginning, see above #Proposal: discontinue Tech News to this board. I'm like to change my mind. The different WMF staff, first of all Tech News etc., are really becoming "overwhelming this board with frequency and amount of content." It is not easy to get hier an answer and to discuss our problems. O propose to order WMF staff to something like "Wikisource:Scriptorium/Tech news" or better "Wikisource:Scriptorium/Announcements".
Let us discuss it, then we can reorder the announcements to the new place. Invited are all, and the users who started the first part above especiaslly - @Bluerasberry, Donald Trung:. Thanks, -jkb- (talk) 20:54, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reping
- I made the original proposal, and I see there are other counter proposals. Here are the options proposed as I understand them:
- Do nothing, status quo
- Discontinue tech news entirely
- Set up new board, send tech news there
- status quo for tech news coming to this board, but archive it separately to a new board
- I favor some change being made and still think the problem is serious enough to merit a response. This board should be a place for humans to have peer to peer interactions. Because these announcements are from outsiders rather than peers, and because they are off-topic for what humans on this board typically discuss, I feel that this board is not the place for those announcements. I support the messages going anywhere else where people can watch the board and access the messages as they like. It is not my intent to block access to the messages, but these are mass mailings and they do outnumber human posts which I see as much more valuable. Another aspect of solution that I want is something which is zero labor to maintain. If someone volunteers to keep up with archiving after a month then that might help, but I prefer a solution which does not require a human to commit to labor.
- Thoughts from others? Bluerasberry (talk) 21:12, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- It can be helpful messages, but I do see the problem of this page being cluttered up. Therefore, my preference goes out to a separate (sub)page for those messages to be posted on. --Ooswesthoesbes (talk) 17:47, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
- I doubt anyone would read the Tech News messages if they weren't here on at least linked here. Ankry (talk) 22:03, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Mobile IP editors are now able to receive warning notices indicating they have a talk page message on the mobile website (similar to the orange banners available on desktop). These notices will be displayed on every page outside of the main namespace and every time the user attempts to edit. The notice on desktop now has a slightly different colour. [25][26]
Changes later this week
- Wikidata will be read-only for a few minutes on 11 November. This will happen around 06:00 UTC. This is for database maintenance. [27]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In the future, unregistered editors will be given an identity that is not their IP address. This is for legal reasons. A new user right will let editors who need to know the IPs of unregistered accounts to fight vandalism, spam, and harassment, see the IP. You can read the suggestions for how that identity could work and discuss on the talk page.

See User talk:-jkb-#ping ping :-), abuse filter 14, Meta CU request, regards -jkb- (talk) 18:02, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
Own Checkuser on Oldwikisource - a proposal
See pls the previous topic #Mensusa accounts and the links to the abuse filter and the CU request at meta. Such request is quite simple (I was CU at Wikilivres for some time) but it costs the stewards a lot of time I guess. Something like this happens here not very often, but however, I think we could have our own checkuser. As far as I know there must be at least two persons (just to control each other, in some projects three etc.), might be we can vote for three. I can gladly apply for it as I know the CU procedure, but that's a matter of choice if we want it. Info: As far as I know, all check users at WMF must announce and confirm their real life identity. 1) do you think we can arrange this and 2) has somebody the interest to apply for it? -jkb- (talk) 20:09, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
- Please carefully read m:CheckUser_policy#Access_to_CheckUser that any wiki must have >= 2 CheckUsers or zero. Thus do not vote until getting at least 2 qualified candidates.--Jusjih (talk) 05:31, 2 December 2021 (UTC) (former CheckUser on English Wikiquote and former steward with no more interest in CheckUser)
- I think, we are discussing on whether we need not about candidates at this point. Ankry (talk) 16:37, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Regardless of policy, I do not think that checkuser tools would be helpful here. If an account was not created or it has made no action after creating, there is no logged action for a checkuser. Stewards may do checks in loginwiki, but see no job for a checkuser here. Ankry (talk) 16:37, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
Pragmatically - I don't think you could get the needed 25 support votes in a timeframe that would be acceptable to stewards. --Rschen7754 22:22, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
Oh "see no job for a checkuser here" - ehm? See #Mensusa accounts, see [talk:-jkb-#Mensusa_2], see abuse log 14 and CU meta (rejected by Urbanec, wo has some problems with cs.wiki/cs.Source and people from there, my experience). -jkb- (talk) 21:12, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- Voting for new CheckUsers does not have a definite time frame. Yet getting 25 supports seems hard here.--Jusjih (talk) 06:06, 3 January 2022 (UTC) (admin on 13 wikis, too busy)
Where can I find nepali language community to talk on wikisource?
Please redirect me to there.—unsigned comment by Kushal Dev Wiki (talk) 14 November 2021 13:50.
- I'm afraid there is no one. But try to find some similar languages on Category:Languages or Category:Babel or Category:Main Pages; however there exist the nepali main page where you could fine the authors who were editing it. -jkb- (talk) 13:13, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- But I'm not sure if they still edit here, might be in this case you should try to reach them on their wikipedias. -jkb- (talk) 13:27, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
Why different languages have different kind of domains?
English wikisource opens in different format than nepali. While opening nepali wikisource, it is redirected from somewhere else. How to turn nepali wikisource into standard subdomain? —unsigned comment by Kushal Dev Wiki (talk) 14 November 2021 13:55.
- @Kushal Dev Wiki: A language domain can be created if it gathers enoth active contributors. According to this page you need at least 5 active controbutors editing the project each month. Ankry (talk) 02:14, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

Problems
- MediaWiki 1.38-wmf.11 was scheduled to be deployed on some wikis last week. The deployment was delayed because of unexpected problems.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 December. It will be on all wikis from 9 December (calendar).
- At all Wikipedias, a Mentor Dashboard is now available at
Special:MentorDashboard
. It allows registered mentors, who take care of newcomers' first steps, to monitor their assigned newcomers' activity. It is part of the Growth features. You can learn more about activating the mentor list on your wiki and about the mentor dashboard project. - The predecessor to the current MediaWiki Action API (which was created in 2008),
action=ajax
, will be removed this week. Any scripts or bots using it will need to switch to the corresponding API module. [30] - An old ResourceLoader module,
jquery.jStorage
, which was deprecated in 2016, will be removed this week. Any scripts or bots using it will need to switch tomediawiki.storage
instead. [31]

Recent changes
- There are now default short aliases for the "Project:" namespace on most wikis. E.g. On Wikibooks wikis,
[[WB:]]
will go to the local language default for the[[Project:]]
namespace. This change is intended to help the smaller communities have easy access to this feature. Additional local aliases can still be requested via the usual process. [32]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 December. It will be on all wikis from 16 December (calendar).

Pali using Thai script
At Thai Wikisource, we found a Pali Tripiṭaka written in Thai script, and according to the policy , we cannot proofread the text there, so I'm wondering if multilingual Wikisource accepts Pali works using Thai script? Here's one of the 45 books of the text. --Bebiezaza (talk) 02:14, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
And as it is published in Thailand, and the copyright had expired in Thailand, can we use our copyright expired law to proofread the text here? --Bebiezaza (talk) 02:21, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Bebiezaza This sounds like it can be hosted here at Multilingual Wikisource (see also Main_Page/Pāḷi): since they were published in up to 1930, and went in the Thai PD after 1930 + 50 = 1980, it was in the PD in its home country of Thailand in 1996. Therefore, it was not restored by URAA and it's in the public domain also in the US per {{PD-1996}}. Inductiveload (talk) 12:19, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
Requesting admin help - proofread transclusion
Transcluding proofread page to mainspace does not move the text out of the way of the page number, see สฺยามรฏฺฐสฺส_เตปิฏกํ/Volume_1/Chapter_1. What should happen is the text moves out of the way for the page number to not stack on top of the text, like as seen in en:The_Return_of_Tarzan/Chapter_2.
I think some other elements might need fixing too, but I have not noticed them yet (except {{nop}}). --Bebiezaza (talk) 14:42, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Zyephyrus, Ankry, Ooswesthoesbes : can you pls have a look at it? thx, -jkb- (talk) 16:04, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
- Probably we need some default CSS settings, but I am not familiar with them; I can only suggest a Mdiv>-based workaround at the moment. Ankry (talk) 16:13, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
- It seems like text highlighting when hovering on page number is also broken --Bebiezaza (talk) 17:40, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I am of no help here :( --Ooswesthoesbes (talk) 07:30, 19 December 2021 (UTC)
- Explicit page numbers like
[ ๒ ]
in สฺยามรฏฺฐสฺส_เตปิฏกํ/Volume_1/Chapter_1 are explicitly added to the wikitext of the page: pages like Page:สฺยามรฏฺฐสฺส_เตปิฏกํ_-_วินยปิฏเก_มหาวิภฺงคสฺส_ปฐโม_ภาโค.pdf/17. It's why they are not moved to the side because they are considered by ProofreadPage as content. - About
text highlighting when hovering on page number
, this feature is managed by a custom script/gadget in a lot of Wikisource but nothing has been added to the oldWikisource about it yet. Tpt (talk) 12:57, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 10 January 2022.
Recent changes
- Queries made by the DynamicPageList extension (
<DynamicPageList>
) are now only allowed to run for 10 seconds and error if they take longer. This is in response to multiple outages where long-running queries caused an outage on all wikis. [33]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
Future changes
- The developers of the Wikipedia iOS app are looking for testers who edit in multiple languages. You can read more and let them know if you are interested.
- The Wikimedia Cloud VPS hosts technical projects for the Wikimedia movement. Developers need to claim projects they use. This is because old and unused projects are removed once a year. Unclaimed projects can be shut down from February. [34]

Upcoming Call for Feedback about the Board of Trustees elections
- You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.
The Board of Trustees is preparing a call for feedback about the upcoming Board Elections, from January 7 - February 10, 2022.
While details will be finalized the week before the call, we have confirmed at least two questions that will be asked during this call for feedback:
- What is the best way to ensure fair representation of emerging communities among the Board?
- What involvement should candidates have during the election?
While additional questions may be added, the Movement Strategy and Governance team wants to provide time for community members and affiliates to consider and prepare ideas on the confirmed questions before the call opens. We apologize for not having a complete list of questions at this time. The list of questions should only grow by one or two questions. The intention is to not overwhelm the community with requests, but provide notice and welcome feedback on these important questions.
Do you want to help organize local conversation during this Call?
Contact the Movement Strategy and Governance team on Meta, on Telegram, or via email at msg wikimedia.org.
Reach out if you have any questions or concerns. The Movement Strategy and Governance team will be minimally staffed until January 3. Please excuse any delayed response during this time. We also recognize some community members and affiliates are offline during the December holidays. We apologize if our message has reached you while you are on holiday.
Best,
Movement Strategy and Governance--Civvi (WMF) (talk) 11:00, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

Community Wishlist Survey 2022
The Community Wishlist Survey 2022 is now open!
This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on 23 January, or comment on other proposals to help make them better. The communities will vote on the proposals between 28 January and 11 February.
The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 18:10, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes
- A
oauth_consumer
variable has been added to the AbuseFilter to enable identifying changes made by specific tools. [35] - Gadgets are now able to directly include JSON pages. This means some gadgets can now be configured by administrators without needing the interface administrator permission, such as with the Geonotice gadget. [36]
- Gadgets can now specify page actions on which they are available. For example,
|actions=edit,history
will load a gadget only while editing and on history pages. [37] - Gadgets can now be loaded on demand with the
withgadget
URL parameter. This can be used to replace an earlier snippet that typically looks likewithJS
orwithCSS
. [38] - At wikis where the Mentorship system is configured, you can now use the Action API to get a list of a mentor's mentees. [39]
- The heading on the main page can now be configured using MediaWiki:Mainpage-title-loggedin for logged-in users and MediaWiki:Mainpage-title for logged-out users. Any CSS that was previously used to hide the heading should be removed. [40] [41]
- Four special pages (and their API counterparts) now have a maximum database query execution time of 30 seconds. These special pages are: RecentChanges, Watchlist, Contributions, and Log. This change will help with site performance and stability. You can read more details about this change including some possible solutions if this affects your workflows. [42]
- The sticky header has been deployed for 50% of logged-in users on more than 10 wikis. This is part of the Desktop Improvements. See how to take part in the project.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 January. It will be on all wikis from 13 January (calendar).
Events
- Community Wishlist Survey 2022 begins. All contributors to the Wikimedia projects can propose for tools and platform improvements. The proposal phase takes place from 10 January 18:00 UTC to 23 January 18:00 UTC. Learn more.

Not sure if this is the right place
I'm working on a volume of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, and there's a part on page 956 that I just have no idea how to work with, namely those braces around the text. TheTechnician27 (talk) 21:19, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
- @TheTechnician27: A better place would be s:en:Wikisoruce:Scriptorium. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 01:39, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Call for Feedback about the Board of Trustees elections is now open
The Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections is now open and will close on 7 February 2022.
With this Call for Feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team is taking a different approach. This approach incorporates community feedback from 2021. Instead of leading with proposals, the Call is framed around key questions from the Board of Trustees. The key questions came from the feedback about the 2021 Board of Trustees election. The intention is to inspire collective conversation and collaborative proposal development about these key questions.
Best regards,
Movement Strategy and Governance
