Master of Science in Actuarial Science

This degree program is offered by the UT Dallas Actuarial Program — a Center of Actuarial Excellence designated by the Society of Actuaries.

  • Its innovative curriculum, including traditional actuarial courses and two advanced actuarial courses, is tailored to prepare students for seven preliminary actuarial examinations administered by the Society of Actuaries. Additionally, students who have not yet completed the courses required for Validation of Educational Experience (VEE) credits in Accounting and Finance, Economics, and Mathematical Statistics have the opportunity to do so.
  • Limited financial support in the form of scholarships and awards is provided. Additional scholarships are available for US citizens and permanent residents.
  • Our students have a strong record of starting full-time jobs right after graduation.
  • NSM Career Success Center is available to support professional development and experiential learning of students.  
  • This program has successfully helped many professionals change their careers smoothly in a timely fashion.
  • Eligible UT Dallas students pursuing BS in Actuarial Science can fast-track into this MS program and take up to 15 credit hours of MS courses to fulfill the BS degree requirements.
  • This program accepts Quick Admit applications from eligible UT Dallas graduates of qualifying BS programs.
  • GRE test score is not required for admission.

Placement

Most of our Actuarial Science MS graduates go on to work in industry, including some for large companies such as AIG and Travelers. Additionally, some choose to continue in academia for further graduate studies. A sample of recent full-time job placements in the industry is provided below.

Summer Internship

Actuarial science students are encouraged to do internships and participate in networking events. UT Dallas offers many tools to students to help them find internships and jobs, including a dedicated NSM Career Success Center that can help with resumé building and interviewing skills. 

Our actuarial program has developed a close working relationship with insurance companies and consulting firms in the southwest over the years. Actuarial career events at UT Dallas provide a great platform for students to network with actuaries, and help secure internships and entry-level jobs. Furthermore, our risk management/actuarial science fraternity, Gamma Iota Sigma (Beta Phi Chapter), sponsors an employer/student mixer in the fall semester. Dallas is a major hub for insurance companies and actuarial consulting firms. UT Dallas’ location is a tremendous advantage for students. Financial Support

NSM McDermott MS Admission Fellowship is offered to support highly qualified MS students. This fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis at the time of admission. All applicants are automatically considered for this fellowship, and a separate application is not required. Nonresidents of the State of Texas who receive this fellowship are also eligible to be considered for a Competitive Scholarship Waiver. This waiver enables them to pay tuition at the resident rate, but its granting is not assured.
