Steward requests/Global permissions/2011-02

Hi! I am an active sysop on sr wiki for three years, so I'm familiar with using this function. A few months ago I became a member of the SWMT team. Sometimes more and sometimes less I monitor small wikis (using IRC), revert vandalism and nonsense and mark articles for speedy deletion. I think I'm experienced enough and I certainly wouldn't abuse the trust. I read global rollbackers policy and I am fully aware that I shouldn't use rollback function for questionable edits or revert war. So, I would like to request GR permission because it would greatly facilitate my work. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. I am participating on huggle project and I would like to get global confirmed status so I could test huggle for all projects I was also asked for assistance on many wikis where I can't help as I do not have rollback so I can't start huggle or some pages are protected so I can't update them (config).

• Support. If I understand correctly Huggle needs rollback to function, so you'd need either GR or local rights in every project where you need to test it. • Comment I've created an opt-in wikiset (stewards-only) from this page and put into it all the wikis that currently uses Huggle. If there's a real need to have autoconfirmed status on those projects we can create a global group for the huggle developers limited by that wikiset so that the rights only applies on those wikis. I'm throwing myself to the lions :) I'm sure most of you have seen me around (mostly last year) fighting vandalism, and helping different stewards by reporting, etc. I am sure global rollback would help me, and even encourage me to help much more to the Wikimedia wikis by combating cross-wiki vandalism. I am an experienced patroller, that recurrently visits IRC channels such as #cvn-sw, and patrol some by irc.wikimedia.org. It's not a big deal, but I'd love you to support. Thank you! These requests were long ago, and I'm sure people here know that I have been combating cross-wiki vandalism (not so much currently... but I do) for long. And the block on es.wikipedia treats a matter that has since been resolved (in my opinion), but still don't let me take an opportunity to come back. I think I am able to help lots, and have enough patience to solve problems. Anyway, if it is worth something, I am mostly involved on English Wikinews (where I have been an administrator since October) and on English Wikipedia. Cheers. • Oppose - i have to agree with Seb az86556 here. You should not be blocked on any wikis if you are seeking global permissions, especially one as large as es. Additionally, in response to Magister Mathematicae's comment, the process is not set up that way. There was no consensus to start handing out global permissions on a temporary basis. Either the user has the trust to have the global tools, or they do not. Walking the fine line of giving people global rights on a "probationary" status seems like a bad idea. • Comment In response to Seb az86556, I would like to state that I personally spoke to es.wikipedia last year with a view to having Diego unblocked there, but it seems that despite everywhere else he was blocked unblocking him and finding he is actually a damn good editor when he sets his mind to it, es.wp seem intent on shutting their doors, ignoring everyone else's findings and telling him to vamoose. I still don't understand what their problem is, but if I recall, I spoke to Magister Mathematicæ about it round the time I posted the request. It seems that some places just want to see the bad side of a person, and ignore the fact that he actually has good qualities, can behave himself, and work like fury when he needs to. It's their loss. I am an active wikipedians in zhwiki. I have been granted patroller & rollbacker on zhwp, sysop on zhwn, autopatroller & rollbacker on yuewp and autopatroller on metawiki. I have work for the fundrasier work for 2010 and WP10 local wiki work for zhwp & yuewp in 2011 January. I also work for transcript work on commons. I even work on the beta wikiversity project for zh. Totally, 32345 contributions can be found in 26 projects using global contributions tools from toolserver, and you may see I have little contributions in small wikis.

I have join the #cvn-sw & #cvn-zh-scan on freenode IRC. I have read the "global rollbackers policy" and I am fully aware that rollbacker should not use rollback function if the edit is a questionable edits or revert war.

I've been dealing with crosswiki vandalism more actively since about two months ago. Most of them from #cvn-sw on IRC. I revert clear vandalisms or mark them to deletion and report it. In the beggining, I started watching the more experienced users' work or asking them any doubt I had. A non-local user should always interfere as little as possible on any wiki and my actions in this kind of vandalism combat is to undo clear vandalisms, nonsense, "asdf", offensive text or other similar actions. I believe I have enough experience to judge what is a blatant vandalism and what is not. I invite everyone to check my edits and give me a feedback.
My homewiki is pt.wiki, where my contributions are related with vandalism combat. I have also decided to participate of other wikis to see how they work on this area and have some experience at en.wiki, es.wiki and simple.wiki. Acting as a local rollbacker is not exactly the same that reverting crosswiki vandalism, but working on wikis with different languages and procedures helped me to understand that sometimes an edit only appears to be vandalism but it is not. I will follow this request and answer any question you might have. If I don't get the flag, it will be at least a good opportunity to improve my edits after hearing other's comments. I am currently an administrator for the English Wikipedia and also the Commons. I used to have admin rights on the Chechen and Kurdish Wikipedias for the maintenance of the sites and for image work. I am requesting global sysop rights in order to work on images at the smaller Wikis, which will involve deletion mostly. In order to help with the deployment of 1.17, in my sweep accross wikis, it would be very helpful if I can finetune these right away without waiting for days for to make an adjustment and then another set of days for the next adjustments (not everything can go in 1 edit). Being able to update the scripts myself will greatly speed up the process. In most cases only a single edit is needed as scripts can be ran from the console and whenever everything is fully tested the edit to the actual MediaWiki-page will be made. However in about as many cases the current scripts (which may or may not be broken) will interfer with whatever I emulate from the Console, so additional edits will be needed.

During the first window/wave the wikis involved are mostly English-speaking and have atleast a few users experienced users with CSS/JavaScript that are also sysop. However, especially next week when the smaller wikis switch, lots of wikis may not have this luxury. My plan is to get a list the most common problems by investiging and fixing the wikis from the first wave and then mostly applying and adjusting these fixes to other wikis.

I would like global IPBE because I use Tor to edit to keep my anonymity. I usually edit small wikis and already have IPBE on enwiki, so I'm good for enwiki but on the other wikis I am unable to edit because the MediaWiki system automatically identifies my IP (which isn't actually mine) as a tor exit node (which it is), could you mind adding the IPBE flag? Why not find some alternative like an unblocked proxy to edit globally, instead of this? Or even better, just using your normal IP and trusting checkusers to not abuse their tools? Ajraddatz (Talk) 05:02, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

It is not for Wikipedia actually, but for just internet usage in general. TBH I find other proxies a little harder to use and Tor just lets me surf as I normally would with Firefox. --Addihockey10 22:28, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

• Support - No reason not to trust an otherwise OK user requesting extra anonymity. We have always liberally granted IPBE for privacy purposes just like this.
