Founded in 2020, H2 Green Steel (H2GS AB) was founded with the ambition to accelerate the decarbonization of industry using green hydrogen. Steel is our first industry vertical due to its technological and commercial maturity when it comes to CO2 reduction possibilities. Fast-forward to today and our first plant is under construction in Boden in northern Sweden. We’re on track to produce millions of tonnes of green steel annually.

    How tall will our steel mill be? The buildings where our melt shop will be located are now taking shape! The 65-meter-tall structure will feature a 105-meter-tall conveyor tower for transporting hot direct reduced iron directly to the melt shop. Here, the hot green iron will be combined with steel scrap and turned into molten steel before heading further along for casting, rolling, and downstream finishing. From iron ore to finished green steel, all in one place!

    Our green hydrogen facility is starting to take shape! Work is moving forward on our more-than-700 megawatt electrolyzer facility. Here, we will use green electricity and water to produce green hydrogen, enabling us to slash emissions from the steelmaking process. Located a short distance from the steel mill, our electrolyzer plant will not only be the largest in Europe, it will also be one of the biggest in the world!

    This spring we hosted several talented master's students, who did research on topics ranging from procurement to sustainability, electricity markets, and electrolyzer technology. They recently had the opportunity to present their findings. Our internship and master's thesis projects tackle real business needs, and the results go straight back into our organization.     Building the world's first green steel mill is no small feat, but with some €6.5 billion in funding, we're proving it’s possible! Our vision is becoming a reality, day by day, thanks to the great support we have from the community, our partners, investors and customers. It’s great to see increasing recognition of the urgent need for transformation in heavy industry. More industries are becoming our customers, and our investor base is growing stronger. Most recently, Demeter, among others, joined as an investor for our plant in Boden.     This is where the magic will happen! The first components of our direct reduction furnace shell have just landed! This delivery means we're one step closer to using green hydrogen to reduce iron ore to sponge iron. And this is just the start – more massive parts, around 600 tonnes in total, are on their way over the next few weeks. Piece by piece, these components will be integrated into our colossal 145-meter-high DRI tower, where the real magic happens! And why is that? Traditional steelmaking uses coal to remove the oxygen from iron ore, which releases huge amounts of greenhouse gases - that’s why the steel industry is one of the dirtiest industries in the world today. By replacing green hydrogen in the reduction process, we can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95%. These parts might not look like much now, but they’re the first step in flipping the script on the entire steel industry!

    From the Bronx to Boden! Marisa Pettersson grew up in the New York City borough of the Bronx before moving to Boden with her husband in 2012. As project coordinator at our construction site, Marisa’s work varies a lot – from coordinating site visits and meetings to supporting site services. “My husband is from Boden, actually. We met at Manhattan College, where we were both on the track team. That’s still a big part of our life – we are both still runners and my husband is president of the local athletics club. We have three kids, and we had to choose whether to raise the family in New York or Boden, so we picked Boden! In college I studied film and communications, and then went into event planning and production. When we came here, I got a job as a project coordinator for one of the big data center projects in Luleå before coming to H2 Green Steel. I like the work a lot. At the end of the day, it’s all about dealing with people. And I think I’m good at that. I love Boden. I love that it is small. And Sweden as a country is family-first. And Boden is like a big family. I love the town. It’s easy.”

    In 2022, Nils Olofsson was still a graduate student at Lund University in southern Sweden. For him, a master’s thesis at H2 Green Steel would be an opportunity to get his foot in the door at an exciting industrial startup. “I was studying renewable energy engineering and knew about Northvolt, of course. When I heard about H2 Green Steel through a Swedish podcast, I was instantly curious.” Writing his thesis about carbon emissions from H2 Green Steel’s construction site in Boden, Nils was impressed by the level of responsibility he was given. “It was great to be able to do something that matters and adds real value to the company,” he says.
