Welcome to Sunningwell CE Primary School

Sunningwell is a lovely, small rural school in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside close to the city of Oxford and the town of Abingdon. We are proud of our connections to the local community, including the church of St Leonard’s in the village and Dalton Barracks.

In January 2019 Ofsted noted that ‘Pupils enjoy learning at Sunningwell. They appreciate the many opportunities offered by the broad and balanced curriculum (and that they) thrive in many areas of the curriculum, such as drama, music and physical education (PE). Pupils … like school because of the teachers and the lessons.’ It also noted that ‘Pupils demonstrate high levels of empathy, kindness and respect for each other, staff and visitors’. At the end of KS2 children have regularly performed above national averages in reading writing and maths.

The staff at Sunningwell are dedicated, knowledgeable, caring and enthusiastic ensuring that teaching and learning are of the highest quality and fun! We are well supported by our parents and an active governing body who ‘bring a breadth of expertise, commitment and enthusiasm to their roles’ Ofsted Jan 2019.

We have a well-equipped playground and wildlife areas including a pond and a wooded spinney which are the focus of many science and outdoor lessons. We are working with the Abingdon Area Archaeological and Historical Society to excavate the footings of a Tudor cottage in our Spinney and have enjoyed association with Heritage Opera and Opera Anywhere.

Sports provision is an important part of the school’s curriculum. The school has held the Sainsbury’s Platinum Mark for School Games since 2017. We have a number of very active sports teams and encourage all of our children to participate in a wide range of sports. After school clubs run every day including sports, art and IT.

I would urge prospective parents to visit the school and to read our Ofsted report which can be found under ‘Key Information’.
