Alert issued across northeast as Remal set to make landfall today

Guwahati: The northeast is bracing for the impact of cyclone Remal, which is expected to make landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Bangladesh's Khepupara on Sunday midnight. The weather system is likely to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to various parts of the northeast.
The IMD has issued a warning of "squally wind speed reaching 50kmph to 60kmph gusting to 70kmph likely over Mizoram, Tripura and south Manipur on Sunday and Monday and wind at 40kmph to 50kmph gusting to 60kmph likely over south Assam and Meghalaya on Monday."
In addition to the strong winds, the Met department has predicted light to moderate rainfall in most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Mizoram, Tripura and south Manipur on Sunday. Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura are expected to get a similar pattern of rainfall on Monday and Tuesday.
The department has also cautioned about the possibility of isolated extremely heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya on Monday and Tuesday, in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday, and in Mizoram and Tripura on Monday.

According to the IMD statement, the depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal moved nearly north-northeastwards and intensified into a deep depression over the same region on Saturday morning. Subsequently, it moved nearly northwards, setting the stage for the impending cyclone and its potential impact on the northeast region.
For Sunday, the IMD has issued a "be prepared" (yellow) alert for Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland and "take action" (red) warning for Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland. A yellow alert has been issued in Arunachal Pradesh for Monday.

For Tuesday, the 'take action" warning is only for Assam and Meghalaya. The other parts of the region have been put on yellow alert.

On Wednesday, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland have been advised to "watch" (yellow alert) while Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have been asked to "be prepared".
