Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and sent India in to bat in their T20 World Cup Super Eight clash on Saturday. Victory for India would put them on the brink of the semi-finals while another loss for the Tigers would effectively rule them out of contention for the last-four.

India beat Afghanistan by 47 runs in their Super Eight opener in Bridgetown while Bangladesh lost to Australia by 28 runs in a rain-hit clash in Antigua.

India, the 2007 champions, named the same team that defeated Afghanistan on Thursday, when Suryakumar Yadav scored a second successive half-century.

For Bangladesh, seamer Taskin Ahmed is replaced by Jaker Ali as the team look to shore up a struggling batting line-up. India have won all four T20 World Cup clashes against their Asian rival and boast an overall 12-1 head-to-head record.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto wins toss, opts to field against India in Antigua

India will be aiming to end India's drought for an ICC trophy since 2013's Champions Trophy and also win their first T20 WC since 2007's inaugural edition in South Africa.

Ahead of the clash between India and Bangladesh in the Super 8s of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, former head coach of Men in Blue, Ravi Shastri heaped praise on star batter Suryakumar Yadav for his magnificent performance against Afghanistan in the previous match.

Suryakumar scored 53 runs from 28 balls at a strike rate of 189.29 against Afghanistan on Thursday. He slammed 5 fours and 3 sixes during his time on the crease. The right-handed batter's knock came to an end in the 17th over after Fazalhaq Farooqi removed him from the crease.

India are coming into this match after beating Afghanistan by 47 runs in their previous Super Eight match. On the other hand, Bangladesh conceded a 28-run defeat in their first Super Eight match of the marquee event.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has lauded wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant's maturity post his return to international cricket following a tragic car accident.

Pant made his return to competitive cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 earlier this year after recovering from multiple injuries sustained during a car crash in December 2022.

Pant's spectacular form in the season paved the way for his return to the Indian team for the T20 World Cup.

Pant has played cameo innings of 36 not out, 42, 18, and 20 in the showpiece tournament so far.

'I'm not happy. I would love it if he (Virat Kohli) gets going and scores more runs. But yeah, it is good when you are challenged at times. Virat Kohli has been “challenged” in the ongoing T20 World Cup but his lean run is allowing the less experienced players to step up and contribute to the team's cause, India batting coach Vikram Rathour said on Friday.

India outplayed Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval here on Thursday to make a perfect start to their Super 8s campaign.

However, Kohli was tested once again in the powerplay and ended up with a run-a-ball 24, his first double digit score in the tournament.

Expectations were after their pre-tournament series loss to USA, but they made it out of a difficult group.

Asked why the team is struggling in batting, Shanto said: "It is difficult to say why we are not able to play. I think everyone has the capability, people have played well in different places in the past. But I do not have an answer to why this is not happening. Everyone has the freedom to play their natural game and they will try to play as they want, but somehow it is not happening."

"The next two matches are important. There is a lot to gain from them. If we can win them, we will be in a better condition. We will play to win every match. Yes, there was big difference in the condition because last match there was a lot of spin and also seam but today the wicket looked flat... a very good wicket to bat and I think we didn't bat well, so I think that is the big difference, probably we should have targeted 160 to 170. I think as a player we had to adjust but we couldn't execute with that new ball, especially in the power play and we couldn't finish last five-six overs, so we lost too many wickets, so if it ended well, we could have scored a proper 160 or 170" -

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged that his batters have been underperforming in the T20 World Cup but promised better showings with the bat in their remaining Super Eights matches including the next one against India.

Bangladesh produced their best-ever showing at the T20 World Cup as they won three matches in the group stage to qualify for the Super Eights. But the Tigers were handed a 28-run DLS defeat by Australia in their opening Super Eight fixture. They take on India next.

India's sole aim in the Caribbean is to win the trophy and a solid performance against Bangladesh will be another step forward in that context. A tougher battle awaits against Australia on June 24.

Bangladesh, who have struggled with their batting throughout the tournament, find themselves in a must win situation after the loss to Australia.

The lack of power-hitters is hurting them and there is no quick fix to that problem. The under-performance of opener Litton Das and Tanzid Khan has also compounded Bangladesh's woes.

On the bowling front, India are expected to retain the combination having given the first opportunity of the tournament to crafty left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

The wickets in the Caribbean have provided enough help for the spinners, prompting India to play three at the Kensington Oval.

The combination is likely to continue here with Kuldeep retaining his place at the expense of Mohammed Siraj.

Top of that list would be the opening pair of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both of whom have got starts but have not been able to turn them into defining knocks. They have made a conscious effort to force the pace but have ended with minimal returns.

Another under-pressure team member is left-hander Shivam Dube, who was picked in the World Cup squad to hammer sixes in the middle and death overs.

However, the IPL form that helped him seal a World Cup berth has deserted him and he is yet to come to the party.

The southpaw did make an unbeaten 31 against the USA in a group league game but it was Suryakumar Yadav's effort that made the difference ultimately.

Another failure might force the team management to consider Sanju Samson in the middle order.

At the ongoing World Cup though, there is no doubt that India are as mighty a cricketing power to be a serious title contender.

With only a travel day separating their remaining two games, they would be hoping that the players, who have not performed as per expectations so far, deliver the goods.

Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels that India should strive to find the right balance in playing XI according to the conditions that would help them clinch victory.

During the group stage in the United States, India decided to go for three frontline pacers and two spinners.

But in the Super 8 stage against Afghanistan, Mohammed Siraj was dropped for Kuldeep Yadav to provide the service of an additional spinner. Hardik Pandya featured as the third pacer, while Shivam Dube provided another seamer option.

Manjrekar evaluated India's playing options, which feature a wide variety of players and feels that the team should go for the winning combination according to the surface.

The weather in North Sound region of Antigua on Saturday is expected to allow a full game in the 'Super 8s' match of the T20 World Cup betweeen India and Bangladesh, but interruptions because of a 'thunderstorm' can't be ruled out. India, who defeated Afghanistan in their first Group 1 match of the 'Super 8s' stage, are the overwhelming favourites to win but can't take the plucky Bangladesh side lightly.
