Apple has started developing its major software updates for 2025, including iOS 19 for iPhones, according to a recent report. This comes just weeks after Apple announced iOS 18 at its annual developer conference.
Mark Gurman shared this information in his Power On newsletter. He says Apple has "formally begun work" on next year's operating systems, even though this year's updates haven't been released to the public yet.
The codenames for these future updates are:
- iOS 19: "Luck"
- macOS 16: "Cheer"
- watchOS 12: "Nepali"
- visionOS 3: "Discovery"
Gurman explains that this early start is normal for Apple.
The company needs to develop software to test next year's devices, which are already being worked on.
While it's too soon to know what new features these updates will bring, Gurman mentions that Apple's AI technology, called Apple Intelligence, might come to the Vision Pro headset next year. This could be part of the visionOS 3 update.
The report also notes that current Apple software in development, like iOS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia, will be released to the public this fall. Beta versions for developers to test are already available.
