#ABDC moves on at 116 Pall Mall with another huge day across the #AUKUS spectrum! Damian Parmenter CBE, one of the busiest and most important UK Ministry of Defence advisors, spoke to the department’s AUKUS approach. Alison Petchell, currently based in Washington, spoke to the structure and work of CASG, and what 2.0 looks like. We had a lively discussion around the recently announced UK Government Strategic Defence Review. Next, Tim Cahill shared insights from Lockheed Martin, with background into his important portfolio of missiles and fire control. He highlighted the work of Lockheed Martin in supply chains and joint venturing in both the UK and Australia. Matt Opie, a new face at the top of Defence SA gave great context into how South Australia’s naval building history sets up the state for SSN AUKUS. Matthew Theoharous broke a family holiday in Greece to deliver a strong address on the sheer size of the investment required, and the importance of collaborating and engaging early in contracts. Then, Ian Courtney touched on Australia’s huge sustainment requirement needed to host Virginias, and in future, SSN AUKUS. There was a neat segue into the follow up session on procurement and supply chains, and we were honoured to have the rich political leadership experience of John Spellar MP (soon to be Lord Spellar), who spoke passionately about the importance of building and nurturing supply chains from the SME level up. Jeremy Coghlan, coming into the very important industry supply chain role – spoke to the fragility of supply chains and what the Australian Government is working to do about it. Brian Connell gave a very useful talk on the parallels in non-military supply chains. Liz McKinney-Bennett chaired the panel discussion, delving into what is a proper understanding of risk. Shifting tack, the Catalyst then turned to a zinger of a session in ‘Meeting the Mission.’ Kicking off was Frank Clifford with a fascinating talk challenging the thinking around risk – risk which cuts across government, industry and potentially the war fighter on ground. We need to unlock and align risk benefit criteria to allow - not stifle - innovation. Gary Stewart brought in the hugely important test, evaluation and certification task - so important to Australia given that much of the capability we are developing, the nation’s not done before. He stressed the importance of integrating testing assurance throughout the lifecycle. Then, Dina Kakaras gave an exciting keynote on the work of the MOD’s Commercial X, which is working to disrupt procurement and taking emerging innovation into the field. The panel discussion with Peter Griffiths underlined the shift needed to be fit for purpose with new demands to keep up with enemy threat.
