Abatable is thrilled to announce that we have partnered with the Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 to enable the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 to invest in a lasting climate legacy and a positive future for climate, nature and people. 🥇 Paris 2024 has been busy planning the greenest Olympic Games in history. Alongside direct sustainability interventions close to the action in Paris – which are set to reduce emissions 50% compared to previous Olympics – the Games are also investing in carbon credits as part of their Climate Solidarity strategy to support additional climate action. Through our partnership with Paris 2024 we sourced and vetted six high-quality climate action projects to expand the Games’ global impact. This saw us leverage our end-to-end carbon market solutions to review and assess hundreds of carbon credit project proposals to identify those that met Paris 2024’s stringent quality criteria. We then structured and delivered an innovative carbon offtake strategy to provide certainty for the Games and financial support for the project development partners. Through Abatable, Paris 2024 is supporting climate action across Guatemala, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Paris 2024 has purchased 1.3 million carbon credits from projects that collectively protect more than 400,000 hectares of threatened forest, conserve habitats for 45 threatened species, provide access to clean energy in 200,000 households, and distribute more than 600,000 clean cooking stoves. In addition to tackling greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, the Paris 2024 portfolio is supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals by protecting nature and biodiversity, expanding clean energy access, promoting gender equality, improving health, and empowering local communities to be drivers of change. Did you know that the most frequently cited reason for not acting on Scope 3 emissions in agriculture and food supply chains was the fact that there is no clear business case for climate-friendly agricultural products? 🛫 The surplus of CORSIA-eligible carbon credits is expected to become negative by 2030 in the absence of new supplies coming online, according to new Abatable analysis. The aviation sector contributes around 3% to global emissions today. As a hard-to-abate sector, direct low-carbon technological solutions including the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and electrification are being developed to reduce this impact, but they will take time to proliferate due to current cost and technological barriers. In the interim, to address emissions the International Civil Aviation Organization in 2016 adopted the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, or CORSIA, to address the projected growth of the sector’s emissions from a 2019 baseline. Under the scheme, any growth in aviation emissions from 85% of 2019 levels needs to be mitigated. CORSIA officially entered its first phase in January this year following a pilot period from 2021 to 2023. Phase 1, which only applies to states that have volunteered to take part, runs from 2024 to 2026, with the mandatory Phase 2 of the scheme starting in 2027. To comply with CORSIA, airlines can purchase SAF, increase fleet efficiency, or purchase CORSIA-eligible carbon credits. Under current market conditions, and in the absence of new credit supplies coming online, Abatable’s forecasts indicate that demand for CORSIA credits will outstrip supply in Phase 2 of the scheme somewhere between 2029 and 2030. Under a conservative scenario modelled by Abatable, CORSIA demand does not surpass 100mn credits until after 2034, however the supply of CORSIA-eligible credits peaks in 2025 and the cumulative supply is only able to meet demand until 2029. Under this scenario, without new projects emerging to generate credits, demand during Phase 2 becomes 14 times larger than supply.
