As Net Zero Week draws to an end, we’d like to share a bit about the efforts #Aberdeen is making towards net zero and becoming a more sustainable city 💚
In Aberdeen, there's a huge effort being made by many different people and organisations coming together to create a greener city for us all. As a smart and sustainable city, Aberdeen continues to work alongside local partners and the community to ensure the future of the city has sustainability, liveability and economic success.
As a city at the heart of the energy sector, the energy transition is a vital priority for Aberdeen. Using skills, knowledge, and experience as a world-leader in energy, the city is investing in net zero technology, building low carbon infrastructure and reskilling and upskilling to support a just transition to net zero with support from organisations such as Energy Transition Zone Ltd & Net Zero Technology Centre.
Our venues are also leading the way for change. Aberdeen’s largest conference and events venue P&J Live, the most sustainable venue in the UK of its type, have recently launched a new multi-faceted sustainability strategy, with the aim of achieving net zero carbons emissions by 2050.
Aberdeen Science Centre are working with our future generations to encourage an early interest in STEM subjects, new technologies and innovation to continue the journey towards net zero.
We’re also proudly the UK’s leading hydrogen city, with Aberdeen boasting 85 hydrogen powered vehicles, including the world's first hydrogen double-decker bus. These vehicles are powered by our publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling stations, and our fleet of hydrogen vehicles is ever growing.
Our City Council have also promised net zero corporate emissions by 2045 at the latest, and have developed a Smart City strategy and action plan that has six key themes, these are:
✅ Smart Public Sector
✅ Smart Technology
✅ Smart Mobility
✅ Smart Digital Skills
✅ Smart Tourism
✅ Smart Living
With continued growth and support, our city can proceed valiantly with our efforts to become net zero. This cannot happen without people and actions, which is why we’re so proud of the efforts being made by the many groups of motivated individuals pushing for a more sustainable city.
