The Better Business Act will transform the way we do business.

About us

The world needs business at its best - helping to fix urgent problems like climate change and inequality. The Better Business Act would transform the way Britain does business so that every single company takes ownership of its social and environmental impact. At a time when we face many urgent challenges, we want to change the law so that it is no longer an option for business to pursue profit at the expense of workers, communities and the environment. By amending Section 172 of the Companies Act, we will update the job description for company directors, making it their responsibility to protect people and the planet at the same time as pursuing profit. We know that a majority of directors want this too. The amendment would provide a firm legal basis for directors to advance the interests of society and the environment alongside those of shareholders. This would in turn provide a clear framework for business to engage with the many existing initiatives that seek to drive up standards. A small change in the law will make a big change in the world. It will allow businesses to make decisions in all of our long term interests, helping to create a fairer, greener future for all.

Today is #BetterBusinessDay – celebrating the trailblazers and innovators shaping a world where business can be a force for good. 📣 The Post Office, P&O and many other high profile corporate scandals have made clear that the current model of business – where making profit for shareholders is prioritised – is broken. To help solve the urgent problems facing society today, all businesses need to be empowered to think beyond profit, and create solutions to the social, environmental and economic crises we face. Introducing the Better Business Act. The #BetterBusinessAct calls for an amendment to Section 172 of the Companies Act, which sets out the ‘job description’ for company directors to ensure they align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns. This small change in the law will make a big change in the world, allowing businesses to make decisions in all of our long-term interests. A coalition of over 2,700 businesses are backing this change. We asked six of these supportive business leaders to help spread the word and make the pitch for better business – now it’s over to you. Just a week into the new job, it's encouraging to see the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed make sure water companies place customers and the environment at the heart of their company objectives, principles that we believe every company should adhere to. This is a strong signal: the most effective way to ensure companies make better decisions is by baking in a long-term, multi-stakeholder approach to their Articles of Association - ensuring directors look beyond shareholder returns. This is what the Better Business Act is calling for: a change to Section 172 of the Companies Act to ensure that all companies, regardless of sector, align the interests of people and planet with profit. Where do Labour’s manifesto commitments leave British businesses and the role they can play in creating the future we need? With a new government in place, Chris Turner, the Better Business Act's Campaign Director and Executive Director of B Lab UK, reflects on Labour’s commitments and what they mean for British businesses and our collective future. Labour's manifesto calls for a ‘mission-driven government’ and recognises the vital role of businesses in achieving these goals. Their focus on sustainable growth, strategic partnerships, and inclusive economic contributions aligns with a better way of doing business. But voluntary actions alone aren’t enough - and we know that all businesses have a role to play in helping the government deliver its missions. The Better Business Act aims to amend Section 172 of the Companies Act to ensure company directors align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns - empowering them to become part of the solution. We’re excited to collaborate with our new government to ensure better business is at the heart of a thriving British economy that thinks for the long-term. Last night, the Better Business Act and B Lab UK joined Higginson Strategy for their summer party at Westminster, marking the first day in parliament for the newly elected MPs. Welcoming MPs, policymakers, journalists and business-owners, the packed reception heard from our Campaign Director, Chris Turner, who spoke about the opportunity and need to harness the power of business for good in pursuit of the missions we share with the government. Interesting read from Sara Drake, the Chief Executive of The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland, on the need for the new government to prioritise corporate governance in order to foster investment and economic growth. The article makes it clear that company directors themselves want to see corporate governance reform pushed up the political agenda. Drake highlights The Institute of Directors (IoD)’ call for an amendment to section 172 of the Companies Act, which sets out the ‘job description’ for company directors to ensure they align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns. We look forward to working with the new government to ensure corporate governance stays high on the agenda. Read the full article.👇 https://lnkd.in/e-5iYKkj

The results are in and the work to hold our new government to account begins now. 🗳️ In their Manifesto, Labour recognises that ‘sustainable growth requires government to be a strategic partner with business’, but we feel the new government must go further to address the outdated governance structures that are holding UK businesses back. Britain needs business at its best - helping to fix urgent problems like climate change and inequality, poverty and unemployment. The Better Business Act would transform the way Britain does business so every single company takes ownership of its social and environmental impact. "Estimates suggest a potential £149bn boost to the UK GDP per year if businesses operated in a manner that purposely benefited society.” Great to read commentary from former Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Sir Stephen Timms, about the role that purpose-driven business can play in advancing the Labour party's mission. Findings from The Purpose Dividend report are referenced — the adoption of stakeholder governance would add £149bn to the economy. This research shows a stakeholder-governed economy is not just the right thing to do, but imperative for sustainable, long-term growth. 📈 We welcome the acknowledgement that business has a fundamental role to play in shifting us towards a more inclusive, equitable and regenerative economy. The Better Business Act would ensure all businesses play their part in creating an economy that has a positive impact on society and the environment. 🌍 Read more in City AM. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e8KU2DGP
