Saving the small things that run the planet

About us

Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates, and we are actively working to save Britain’s rarest little animals, everything from bees to beetles, worms to woodlice and jumping spiders to jellyfish. There are more than 40,000 invertebrate species in the UK, and many of these are under threat as never before. Invertebrates are vitally important to a healthy planet – humans and other life forms could not survive without them. The food we eat, the fish we catch, the birds we see, the flowers we smell and the hum of life we hear, simply would not exist without bugs. Invertebrates underpin life on earth and without them the world’s ecosystems would collapse.

A huge congratulations to the Canvey Wick project partnership team on winning Project Of The Year 2024 in The Land Trust awards on Wednesday! 🤩 A great result & deserved recognition of the importance of this brownfield site & all the work taking place there. ℹ️ Canvey Wick is a 93 hectare Site of Special Scientific Interest on Canvey Island in Essex. Rich in plants, insects and animals, there are more species per square metre here than any other site in the UK. It has even been referred to as ‘England’s Rainforest’. As such, it’s one of the most important British sites for endangered invertebrates. The RSPB manage just under 19ha of the SSSI as a nature reserve in partnership with Buglife, on behalf of the Land Trust, with work underway to bring more of the site under management with public access. 🎉 Congratulations to everyone involved in preserving and sharing the story of this once threatened brownfield site and its smaller inhabitants. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eQFexFN7 . . #CanveyWick #Brownfield #Award

This week along with Fidra, the Environmental Investigation Agency, and 15 co-signatory organisations, we have published a joint position paper highlighting the critical and urgent need for regulatory action on addressing microplastic and chemical contamination of sewage sludge used in agriculture. ℹ️ Full Position Paper: https://lnkd.in/gQr8Vr39 We urge the UK Government to adopt these recommendations swiftly to protect our soils, waterways, and public health. ✅ Such regulations will pave the way for a safer, more sustainable circular economy. . . #Microplastics #PFAS #Sewage #Sludge #CircularEconomy #WildlifeWednesday

Join Buglife Conservation Director, Craig Macadam, as he shares some interesting insights into the Species on the Edge Partnership Programme Tadpole Shrimp project, which aims to re-establish a second population of Tadpole Shrimp on the Solway Coast. "It might not look like much but the handful of sediment in my hand probably contains 50 or so eggs of one of the rarest invertebrates in Britain, and one of the oldest known animal species in the world. 220 million years ago, while dinosaurs roamed the land, these amazing crustaceans were swimming around their feet in temporary pools and wetlands...!" Did you know that today (July 6-7) is #WorldFireflyDay?  The Common Glow-worm (Lampyris noctilucca), is now categorised as Near Threatened according to the latest assessment of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  👇 https://lnkd.in/e3QNwVYk ❓The Common Glow-worm is a beetle which produces its own light through bioluminescence. It's the most familiar and widespread glow-worm species, but recent assessments suggest that their populations are threatened and may be pushed to extinction in the near future.  🌎 Their global distribution ranges from northern Portugal to eastern Siberia, where they thrive in open grasslands and the females' glow is most visible; their larvae prefer scrub and hedgerows where they hunt for snails and slugs. 🤔 Have you seen a glow-worm this year? 📑 Have you seen our 2024 General Election - Manifesto for Bugs? 🤎 It sets out what our smallest and most numerous creatures need from any future Government. Invertebrates are the foundations of a healthy environment, they are essential to ecosystem function and without healthy populations, it is impossible to halt nature's decline.    ✅ As well as achieving existing targets and pledges, halting nature loss, and reversing invertebrate declines will require the following actions and commitments:  🌼Reconnect our landscape by filling B-Lines with wildflower-rich stepping-stones;  💡Set light pollution reduction targets;  🐝 Strengthen bee-friendly pesticide;  💚 Dedicate new resources to save our most threatened species;  🏠 Improve planning for invertebrates;  🌍 Lead global action on nature-positive trade;  ❌ Stop the sale of banned toxins for domestic use. ℹ️ Read the full Manifesto for Bugs in detail  👇 https://lnkd.in/esP-vtv5 ❤️🔃 our Manifesto for Bugs to keep bugs on the agenda! . . #Manifesto #ManifestoForBugs #BugsMatter #WildlifeWednesday #GeneralElection #SolitaryBeeWeek

The Common Glow-worm (Lampyris noctilucca), is now categorised as Near Threatened according to the latest assessment of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  👇 https://lnkd.in/e3QNwVYk ❓The Common Glow-worm is a beetle which produces its own light through bioluminescence to communicate. It's the most familiar and widespread glow-worm species, but the recent assessments suggest that their populations are threatened and may be pushed to extinction in the near future.  🌎 Their global distribution ranges from northern Portugal to eastern Siberia, where these beetles thrive in open grasslands and the females' glow is most visible; their larvae prefer scrub and hedgerows where they hunt for snails and slugs. 💡Light pollution has been identified as a driver of their population decline along with other human-induced challenges such as habitat loss, climate change and use of chemicals in agriculture.  Female glow-worms emit light to attract mates but the increase in Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) has meant a lack of success in mate attraction, resulting in decreases in their populations.  🔍 Solutions to reversing the negative trends in their population include switching off unnecessary lights, identifying, protecting, and restoring glow-worm habitats and recording glow-worm sightings.  Stronger policies that recognise light as a pollutant are needed to save these glorious bioluminescent beetles. . . #GlowWorm #FireFly #LightPollution #NurtureTheNightShift #CurtainsForLightPollution IUCN DarkSky
