Collaborative vs. Siloed Hedge Fund When considering a position at a hedge fund, it's important to evaluate which environment aligns with your working style and career goals. There are typically two kinds of environments in the hedge fund industry: Collaborative and Siloed (also known as Multi-Manager). Collaborative Hedge Funds • Teams work closely together across various strategies and asset classes, often within a single book • Encourages open communication, idea-sharing, and collective problem-solving • Creates a sense of shared success and team achievement Siloed Hedge Funds (Multi-Manager) • Individual portfolio management teams operate independently • Each team manages its own portfolio with minimal interaction with others • Performance is directly tied to individual teams, making it easier to track success So, which is the best environment? There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Both have their pros and cons. A collaborative environment might be better if you value teamwork and shared success. If you seek independence and thrive under personal accountability, a multi-manager setup could be more suitable. There’s much more to consider, but I hope this gives you a clearer picture if you're thinking about a move to the hedge fund industry. As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need more insights into navigating the hedge fund landscape.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲? Reflecting on your motivations is crucial. A word to the wise: most firms seek compelling reasons beyond “my friend from University makes more money than me". 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜... ◽ Greater intellectual challenges (Coding + Maths + Finance) ◽ Closer collaboration with quants - every day ◽ Greater impact on fund performance (one quant developer at a hedge fund was paid an £8M bonus in one year) ◽ Better career progression (Firms with QD’s tend to have offer a steeper learning curve through a more 360 role) 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴? There is significant overlap between pure engineering roles on the buy-side and quant development roles – but to make a successful move, you need to identify areas where you might benefit from upskilling, as well as those where you can add value. *𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙡𝙮 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙙* 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙌𝘿 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙎𝙒𝙀 𝘚𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳: Focuses on building infrastructure components required for trading and occasionally assists quant developers with their strategies. #Relocation to the UAE for Machine Learning Scientists (LLM)! Durlston Partners is working exclusively with a firm based in the UAE who will be hiring ML Scientists who are interested in exploring the application of LLMs to various stages of the investment / research process. To manage expectations on how the process starts: - I cannot tell you who the client is from the get-go, it will require a leap of faith. No your profile won't have been sent to them already, that's the luxury of exclusivity. - After said leap, if you are requested for an interview, I then tell you all the information about with whom you shall be speaking. You will need to have a bachelor's from a hashtag #Top100University globally. For clarification, this is the classification generally, not for your specific subject. Whilst I completely understand you might not like me for highlighting that, at least we're both saving each other some time. Fit the bill? Come on, walk on fire with me! 📩 warwick@durlstonpartners.com
