We are currently on the hunt for a new lay member of our Complaints Committee. Members play a central role in our work by making decisions on whether there has been a breach of the Editors’ Code of Practice in individual cases. The work is extremely varied and requires Committee members to reach judgements on how the Code applies to many different types of journalism, on many different subjects. We want fair and impartial candidates with an interest in press standards and the process of balancing freedom of expression with other rights of individuals. You'll need outstanding analytical skills as well as verbal and written communication skills. Find out more: www.ipso.co.uk/vacancies

A new poll from the Science Media Centre, published today, has found that almost three quarters of people get their science news from traditional media rather than social media (30%). The IPSOS poll, which surveyed 2,337 people aged 16 and over, also found significantly higher levels of trust in traditional news media as a source as compared to social media (55%:19%). Half of those getting their news from social media say that it usually links back to a traditional news outlet. (Links in the comments below 👇 ) Charlotte Dewar, IPSO chief executive commented: “For 20 years the Science Media Centre has encouraged dialogue between journalists and scientists, who have in common a duty to challenge, investigate, and scrutinise. This engagement has promoted better editorial standards as well as improved scientific and public understanding. This poll illustrates how engagement coupled with experience can drive up standards in the reporting of challenging and nuanced issues. We believe that regulation has a role in generating trust too, because it is a signal to readers that journalism is accountable.”
