  • What a fantastic and inspiring story!

❓ Who do you know that quietly does amazing things ❓ Some people spend their lives doing amazing things, never seeing themselves as anything special and receiving any accolades would be the last thing on their minds. Sarah Shepherd is one of these people. So, when she was invited to be presented with the Lord Mayor of Leicester’s ( Susan Barton ) Honoured Citizen Award, Sarah was more than a bit shocked! Passionate about Fairtrade, in 1996 Sarah gathered round her a group of expert friends to get the first Just for Christmas pop up shop in a church foyer in the centre of Leicester. Newenglish Design were there at the start, making sure everything looked great and communicated with clarity. @Robin Pointon used his PR and Marketing skills to engage with local press, securing a huge package of editorial coverage when Sarah had enthusiastically explained what she was doing to the local newspaper editor. Another friend secured a huge hoarding en-route to the city centre where two artist friends worked with local school children painted a huge colourful mural with the shop name, the location and opening times. Other theatrical friends created a flash-mob of Christmas Shepherds following a huge ‘star’ with people following them to the JUST pop-up. Rosemary Connolly, a local celebratory opened the pop-up with a large crowd. There were Celebrity Shop Assistants - all covered by the press - where the actors from the local theatre production, Leicester Tigers' Rugby players, local MP’s and a radio presenter spent an hour working in the pop-up shop. All this backed up by a roster of amazing volunteers, all inspired by Sarah to give their time to this. The pop up was a huge success, with great press coverage, amply explaining what Fairtrade and the idea of making ethical choices when you shop. The pop-ups became a permanent shop, with work in the community, schools, regular fashions shows, attended by hundreds - one hosted by the wonderful late George Alagiah, Patron of the Fairtrade Foundation that year, who said he’d never seen anything so professional. Along the way, Sarah was also instrumental in Leicester becoming a Fairtrade City. Not to mention the paid workers and volunteers (apart form Sarah, who has NEVER taken a wage) who keep the Just shop what it is today, with the reputation of being one of the best Fairtrade ethical shop in the UK. Today Sarah, her mum Mary and I (as nominee) were honoured to go to the Lord Mayor’s office for Sarah to be presented with the award and enjoy afternoon tea with the Lord Mayor Councillor Dr Susan Barton.

  • We’re now a Certified B Corporation! Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies verified by B Lab to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. Going through the process towards certification itself was immensely valuable to us. And I’d highly recommend it to any business. But the reality is we would never have started nor completed the process without participating in the BIA programme (B Impact Assessment programme) offered by Business On Purpose (bop), wonderfully facilitated by Andy Hawkins, bop’s founder and C-3PO (Chief People, Planet, and Purpose Officer). (Thank you. Naomi Trentham (MITOS Global) for introducing me to Andy. You were spot on!) We would not have had the capacity and knowledge, nor the headspace, to go on the B Corp journey without that hand-holding and mentoring. It was an invaluable experience that helped Koshy Associates capture and articulate our values and what we were already doing well, and enabled us to gain knowledge, see the gaps, learn from what other were doing, see what good practice looks like, access tools and take practical, manageable steps to move us forward in being a purposeful business. Engaging with B Lab UK and their Impact Assessment Platform has been a pleasure. B Lab is a non-profit network created in 2006 with the mission to inspire and enable people to use business as a force for good. There are B Labs across the globe. B Lab UK, launched as a charity in 2015, to redefine success in business through building a community of engaged businesses, raising awareness of the B Corp Movement and influencing change in the UK economy. We procrastinated several times on the certification journey: “Oh no! We have to gather and submit evidence!” But that was actually straightforward, and we really got into it. “Oh no! we’ve got an interview with an assessor!” It was fine. The two-way communication on the platform pre-and post-assessment, as well as during the interview itself was really positive. After all, it’s not about blagging it; the certification process is about encouraging and supporting lived values of meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability; of using business as a force for good in the world. As B Lab states: “By harnessing the power of their business, B Corps commit to positively impact all stakeholders – workers, communities, customers, and our planet.” Not a bad thing to commit to. It’s not about jumping on a band wagon, adopting jargon, or having other people’s values foisted upon us; it’s about empowering us to live out and articulate the values we already have, setting ourselves up better to deliver on our commitments, and continuing to grow by learning from others’ example. Now the work continues to live it out and make a positive impact. Wish us well. Andy Hawkins, Business On Purpose UK; Naomi Trentham, MITOS; B Lab; B Corp UK (B Lab UK).
