Netacea's Threat Research Team developed the BLADE Framework - an open-source knowledge-base to help cybersecurity professionals identify the TTPs used by adversaries to exploit weaknesses in the business logic of web facing systems. The team noticed, when they came to the bot protection market, that existing frameworks like Mitre ATT&CK that help cyber professionals model and respond to traditional cyber-attacks were not well suited for modelling business logic attacks. I recently posted about the myth that cryptocurrency transactions are untraceable. Skilled investigators can map networks, gather evidence, recover funds, and trace those responsible. Here are some techniques: 💵 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆: Use blockchain explorers and tools like Maltego and Breadcrumbs to trace the path of transactions between wallets and exchanges. 🗺 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: Use behavioural analysis to link addresses related to one entity. 🌐 𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗧: Search for wallet addresses using Google advanced operators, internet archive sites and open-source crypto abuse databases. This is just the tip of the iceberg. You also need to factor in the proper process to run a successful investigation, as criminals' use of crypto exchanges to obscure their identities can be highly sophisticated. When it comes to business logic, convenience for users means convenience for attackers. I can log in and stream House of the Dragon from any device - laptop, tablet, phone, TV, Sky box - but so could attackers. The sheer number of login endpoints available for streaming services makes it really challenging to defend them all from credential stuffing bots. Streaming accounts are some of the most abundant items sold on illicit marketplaces across the clear web, deep web and dark web.
