This June, two of London’s most-loved, free-entry public events, Pride In London and West End Live 2024, benefitted from outdoor Wi-Fi connectivity provided by Ontix over two consecutive weekends at the iconic hotspot Trafalgar Square. Over 70,000 musical theatre fans attended West End Live this year to see a star-studded lineup of West End musicals, and over 32,000 took part in the Pride in London parade alone, with thousands more visiting.  Ontix’s freely available public Wi-Fi network, installed on surrounding street furniture like lampposts, carried over 100GB of data for Pride in London and 130GB for West End Live, equivalent to over a month’s worth of video streaming. Visitors could access Ontix’s Wi-Fi to stream, transact, download, upload and communicate without the risk of slowing down network traffic. The Ontix team were busy on a beautiful evening in Trafalgar Square yesterday making sure the organisers of West End Live 2024 this weekend have sufficient connectivity for the operation of key event facilities. The team deployed units on stage and on street furniture around Trafalgar, such as lampposts, to ensure boosted connectivity for the organisers of the free entry, open-air musical event in collaboration with Westminster City Council Council and for sponsors including TikTok. The network will enable the effective operation of key event facilities, such as CCTV and EPOS (electronic point of sale) systems, supporting organisers in efficiently, successfully and securely running the event and prevent any network over-burdening. Over 65,000 musical theatre fans will be attending to see a star-studded lineup of live West End Musicals, from Disney’s Frozen to Six The Musical, and Ontix’s technology will ensure everyone can stream, access, download and upload easily at the event with free access to public wifi. #Connectivity #PublicWifi #WestEndLive #Ontix

With another Mobile World Congress behind us, Andy McKinnon and Tom Hayden recap on 3 of the biggest insights and takeaways from Barcelona this year.    1. Accelerating Open RAN Momentum   One major takeaway was the accelerating industry drive towards neutral host Open RAN technology. By significantly reducing the number of radios needed on street furniture such as lampposts, neutral host small cells are paving the way for more efficient, collaborative, decluttered connectivity in urban and rural areas alike. This is complemented by Open RAN for indoor deployments.   2. Realising the Full Potential of 5G   With the power of small cell technology deployed on street furniture, operators will be able to deploy 5G on street-level in a more cost-effective and energy-efficient way. Small cells provide the way for 5G to become fully fledged.    3. Promoting Sustainability   Given increasing energy consumption and the drive to meet sustainability goals, there was a focus on promoting sustainability within 5G infrastructure. Ontix and Virgin Media O2 have achieved another boost for UK mobile connectivity as the first Virgin Media O2 small cells have gone live in Birmingham. Residents, businesses and visitors across the UK’s second largest city have received a major improvement to their 4G mobile services after small cells were deployed across some of the city’s busiest sites. Ontix have been working closely with Virgin Media O2 to deploy small cells as a cost-effective solution to boost capacity in dense urban areas and improve customer experience. This deployment marks a growth in the number of Virgin Media O2 small cells nationwide, following our recent deployment in Skegness and previously in London and the South East. The speed at which Virgin Media O2 and Ontix could deliver this project was only made possible with the support of Birmingham City Council and WM5G.
