  • 📈 This was a good shaker test for Sensoteq's Kappa X wireless sensor! In the case example below, Stuart Walker is tracking a troublesome bearing defect. Spoiler: the sensor passed with flying colours! 🏭 'Critical vibrating cleaning screen for a food production factory. Vibrating screen, 2 off gearboxes run at 200mm/sec RMS 840 RPM. Bearing defect monitored, avoided plant shutdown until end of production campaign saving an estimated £42k in operating costs.' 🛟 For more Kappa X examples, visit the Website via the links in the comments, or email the VA team: info@rms-reliability.com. #gearbox #fans #shakers #foodindustry #conditionmonitoring #wirelesstechnology #vibrationanaysis

  • 📷 This week for #MAMonday, the video shows how RDI Technologies Inc.'s Iris MX™ camera helped the Motion Amplification® team to detect the root cause of failing temperature probes on a large Gas Compressor. 💬 Stuart Walker "We have had some great applications in the Oil & Gas Industries. MA technology works really well on piping and instrumentation vibration problems helping get down to the root cause and rectification of the problem. ♨️ Nice example here of some failing temp probes on a large Gas compressor. Vibration was the suspected cause so MA was used to visualize the problem in a poor access area. Now with the vibration (Pulsation frequency from compressor 5XRPM) occurring 250 times a second (250Hz) we used our high speed IRIS MX™ camera to capture this motion to visualize in full HD. We could see straight away why the probes were failing due to the out of phase motion with the main discharge pipe. As the vibration was very directional on the pipe we suspected a resonance problem. 📈 A quick bump test confirmed the pipe had a natural frequency of 242Hz very close to the compressor pulsation frequency of 250Hz. Plan is to change the natural frequency of the pipe at least 20% away from the pulsation frequency and re-assess levels. We will probably do some temp stiffening and visualize with the camera on how the piping and probes react before fitting a final solution." 🔗 Learn more about the Iris MX™ camera online at: https://lnkd.in/decTw7b, or email the MA team: info@motionamplification.co.uk. #motionamplification #vibrationanalysis #reliabilityengineering #oilandgas #resonance

  • 💡 In this short video-snippet, Dean offers a comprehensive insight into the vibration monitoring and prediction of a 25 megawatt steam turbine and a 45 megawatt gas turbine at a CHP (Combined Heat and Power) plant: 🚨 The Turbines: • Both turbines are equipped with online vibration protection systems that monitor the shaft movement within a white metal lining. • The turbines utilise hydrodynamic bearings, also known as sleeve bearings or white metal bearings. 📈 Vibration Monitoring: • The turbines have X&Y probes that measure the gap between the probe tip and the shaft within the bearing, effectively measuring the movement of the shaft in free space. • The steam turbine shaft operates at 9,000 rpm. 📉 Machine Protection vs. Prediction: • Machine protection involves safeguarding the turbine from immediate threats. • Machine prediction focuses on foreseeing potential issues based on current data. 📐 Measurement Process: • Dean demonstrates how to take measurements on the casing of the bearing in three axes: horizontally, vertically, and at the non-drive end. • It's essential to measure the dynamic movement of the shaft itself, which requires accessing the control room and connecting to the X&Y probes. ⚡Gas Turbine Specifics: • The 45-megawatt gas turbine's power turbine operates at about 10,200 rpm, while the compressor end runs at approximately 3,500 rpm. • A gearbox reduces the speed to 1,500 rpm, which then drives the generator at the same speed. 🛠️ Control Room Measurements: • The gas turbine protection system is designed to shut down the machine in case of sudden, catastrophic changes in machine dynamics. • Dean connects to the X&Y probes and any relevant casing measurements to monitor the dynamic movement of the shaft in free space. • A speed reference signal is used as a trigger to understand the motion of the system. • Dean emphasises the importance of recording process parameters like flow rate, temperature, and load before starting vibration readings. 🌱 Conclusion: • Vibration monitoring provides predictive information about potential issues in the turbine, complementing the existing protection systems. • The dynamic movement of the shaft, separated by a film of oil and a white metal lining in the bearing, is crucial to understand for effective monitoring and prediction. 🔗 Watch the full video on YouTube (8 mins); link in the comments. #conditionmonitoring #vibrationanalysis #turbomachinery #steam #turbine #powerplant

  • 🔎 For those new to the channel, or the topic of Vibration Analysis, this #MAMonday Motion Amplification® video taken by Stuart Walker, shows how bad things can get when fans have severe vibration levels: ⚠️ "Probably one of the worse fans i have ever measured with levels well over 100mm/sec!, should be around 1-2mm/sec. Just shows you how destructive high vibration levels can be, this Motion Amplification® footage is slowed down and is only 9 seconds in real-time. It shows the fan ramping up to to full speed 2980 RPM, note the NDE bearing becoming loose due to the severe vibration levels then gas seal failure. ❓ This fan historically had been a problem for many years and was not relied on as a spare. Multiple companies tried to balance it and really struggled to get the levels down. We were asked to have a look at it and started with a runup using an Emerson's Automation Technologies & Solutions AMS 2140 4 Channel Analyzer with transient, tach and RDI Technologies Inc. IRIS M™ Motion Amplification Camera. 📈 The run up showed a couple of severe resonant excitations, this caused the NDE brg to be come loose then the gas seal failure as the fan was runup. When we carried out the bump tests after tightening everything back down, we found the structure was okay but the impellor had clear natural frequencies close to the operating speed, very surprised this fan had not disintegrated. 🆕 In the end a whole new fan was designed by Halifax Fan Group fan with the much preferred mono block arrangement for the bearing assembly, this is now running sweet at 2 mm/sec RMS and the site has a reliable spare for the process now." 🔗 For more information about Motion Amplification® technology and Emerson's AMS 2140, see the resources list in the comments. #motionamplification #vibrationanalysis #conditionmonitoring #petrochemicals #fans

  • 📌 Another country unlocked for JPS Reliability Ltd.'s Book of Gold and Enhanced System Reliability; both books en route to Thailand! 💬 James S.: "Our first publication was effectively 20 years of black book notes put into a VA reference book to assist people learn and written for the tradesman and technicians. The feedback we had from that publication was that people loved the case studies and found them helpful, this was why we wrote this second book. This second book will suit anyone from a newbie to a seasoned vibration analyst – the book will also be a great resource for the reliability engineer who needs real life data for comparison of failures. The Book of Gold has 118 case studies with VA data and strip inspection reports and some thermal imaging data as well." 📚 The Book of Gold is included as part of the course materials on VA CAT-II courses; Enhanced System Reliability is included on VA CAT-III courses. 🛒 Free next-day delivery for UK orders!
