✨ Sony Pictures Classics have announced that they will release The Outrun theatrically in North America in partnership with Stage 6 Films. The Screen Scotland-supported film will open in theatres nationwide on 4 October 2024 🇺🇸 Based on the bestselling memoir by Amy Liptrot, who co-wrote the screenplay with director Nora Fingscheidt, The Outrun is an acutely honest drama about addiction and recovery. Twenty people from across the UK have joined a Channel 4 scheme designed to work with TV drama writers in the West and South West of England and Wales, North of England, and Scotland – providing them with months of expert industry training, mentoring and support to develop their first pilot episode-spec script. https://lnkd.in/ecAMA-jP Following the successful pilot in the West and South West of England in 2022, the programme has since expanded to work with participants located near Channel 4’s regional hubs: Bristol, Glasgow and Leeds. The writers will benefit from nine months of expert industry training and mentoring from scripted indies and a script editor, alongside feedback from Channel 4. The New Writers Scheme is funded and developed by 4Skills with Channel 4 Drama and supported by the BFI NETWORK (Film Hub South West and Film Hub North) alongside support from Screen Scotland.

STV Studios has been commissioned by BBC Factual to produce a landmark documentary film for BBC Two and iPlayer, Disease X, which will see virologist and broadcaster, Dr Chris van Tulleken, set off on an international hunt for the source of the next global pandemic: https://lnkd.in/dyVEySb3 With millions of undiscovered viruses currently present in the world, this Horizon Special will follow Dr Chris as he travels the globe to meet the scientists racing to prevent the next pandemic. During his high-stakes investigation, Chris will speak to leading experts in the fields of virology, epidemiology, vaccinology and public policy around the world. Disease X, a 1 x 60' film for BBC Two and iPlayer, is made by STV Studios Factual – the team behind BBC Two documentary, Unvaccinated – and co-produced by The Open University, with support from Screen Scotland.

📣 Edinburgh International Film Festival have revealed the 2024 programme: https://lnkd.in/enW-ri75 Running from Thursday 15 August to Wednesday 21 August, this year’s Festival programme features musical odysseys, dystopian worlds, laughter in the face of darkness, vivid portraits of characters from the fringes of society and reimagined inner and outer spaces. Complementing the previously announced Opening Night film, Nora Fingscheidt's The Outrun starring Saoirse Ronan, the Festival presents a selection of compelling new and established voices in cinema including 18 World Premieres with an Out of Competition strand offering additional World and UK premieres. The Closing Night film is the World Premiere of Carla J. Easton and Blair Young’s powerful new documentary Since Yesterday: the Untold Story of Scotland's Girl Bands, which sits within a strong presence for Scottish filmmakers and Scottish talent also elsewhere in the programme 🏴 Competing for The Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence, ten feature-length World Premieres will be presented, with the winning filmmaker being awarded £50,000 to support their future projects. Decided on by an audience vote, the winner will be announced at the end of the Festival and the award is fully funded by The Sean Connery Foundation. Tickets for the EIFF are on sale from midday on Thursday 11 July 2024 🎟️ EIFF 2024 is supported by Screen Scotland and the Industry Programme is backed by EXPO funding from the Scottish Government through Creative Scotland.

Glasgow Film Festival have opened applications for their new comedy talent lab, Funny Features. Open to comedy writers, producers, and writer / directors developing their first or second feature. Successful applicants will have access to one-to-one consultancy sessions, online workshops and mentoring. Teams will leave the scheme having gained extensive knowledge of the film finance landscape, confidence in navigating the marketplace, a clearer understanding of their audience and market placement, a widened network of decision-makers, a film finance package, a final draft of their script and a project ready to enter the international marketplace.
