A message from our Group Chief Executive, Mark Irwin, on World Environment Day 2024: 🌎 Serco’s purpose is to impact a better future, and environmental sustainability goes to the very heart of that. Today, on #WorldEnvironmentDay, we are renewing our commitment to drive progress in meaningful ways to address climate change. Impact is front and centre in everything we do, and as Serco’s Group Chief Executive, I see that determination to make a positive difference and have a real impact right across Serco, in every colleague I meet and every worksite I visit. We’ve recently refocused our ambitions for the environment and wider approach to ESG, pledging to measure our positive impact on People, Place and Planet. Under Planet, we’re committed to reducing our carbon emissions under the Science Based Targets initiative. I’m happy to say we’re making good progress towards our net zero goal: Our carbon emissions from our operations fell 18.4% between 2022 and 2023 📉 47% of our total electricity usage is renewably sourced, up from 27% in 2022 ⚡ Electric & hybrid vehicles now make up nearly a third of our fleet 🚗 We know there’s more to do and we’re laser-focused on continuing to drive down our carbon emissions, contributing to the net zero and nature recovery ambitions of our value chain partners, and reducing our environmental footprint. Find out more about how we’re impacting a greener future by going to www.serco.com and visiting our Impact Hub, or read about our wider impact in our Impact Report: https://lnkd.in/eWeWKVAC #ImpactABetterFuture #WorldEnvironmentDay #Serco #GenerationRestoration

A fantastic partnership between Serco and Take2 offering Tane at Auckland South Correctional Facility the opportunity to learn computer coding, something that would never have been considered 4 years ago. This will help them gain critical skills for when they are released, and with Take2, a potential pathway for employment. #ImpactABetterFuture #SercoASPAC

From a student at Auckland South Corrections Facility: "The world is changing. Everything’s going digital – you can see it when you watch the news. You can see where it’s heading. That’s why coding is such a good skill – every person should learn a bit of it. I’ve done heaps of programmes in prison: building, welding, working with my hands. But this is the most challenging thing I’ve ever done, way out of my comfort zone. I’ve been in here for almost 10 years, so long that I didn’t know anything about computers. My kids were more computer savvy than me. So I have had to put in the work. I have to read the books, I have to try to understand the code and all the different aspects to it.    But I’m enjoying the challenge. There’s no cheating and no shortcuts with this course. People outside have got the internet, they can just Google answers. But we can’t do that – there’s no internet here, so you’ve gotta grab the book and flip through the pages to find the solution. It means you really have to learn the basics and understand the fundamentals. You have to be really mentally resilient.    On the outside I worked in warehousing, dispatch, goods, that kind of thing. I’ve got my parole coming up soon, and I’m definitely gonna continue coding, or something similar. When you have a criminal record, you're already on the back foot when you get out of prison and are looking for a job - that’s part of the reason why I joined this course. Take2 has wraparound support and the path continues when you get out of prison. I can keep learning and they’ll help me move forward and support me on the job hunt.   I’m keen to work in the tech industry. And I tell you now, I don't know many Islanders that are doing coding. I just figured it would be cool if people rock up to their office and they see a brown boy me sitting at the computer, instead of the stereotypical developer!   If I get a job in that industry, it will show people, my family and friends, that there is a pathway here. All the Pacific Islanders I know are all doing labour jobs, which is hard on the body when you reach a certain age. But I think this will show them that they don't need to sweat and they don't need to break their backs.    At some point, it's so good to have a job where you can sit down at a desk. You don't even need to be at an office. All you need is a laptop and internet and you can do your work from home. It just opens the door to this whole world aye. I just want to pursue this and see how far it takes me."
