The Open Data Institute works with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem
About us
The ODI is a non-profit company, founded in 2012 by inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and AI expert, Sir Nigel Shadbolt, and headquartered in King’s Cross, London, UK. Our mission is to work with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem. We want a world where data works for everyone. To do this, we work with businesses, governments, research organisations, public bodies, civil society, and philanthropic and other grant-giving organisations. THE WORK WE DO The ODI operates as an institute, and we also undertake commercial work that advances our mission. Our operating costs are met through a range of grants and commercial revenue. Our work includes applied research; consultancy services; training; and providing free reports, tools and webinars. We focus our efforts in three broad areas: 1. Improving the data practices of organisations so that they can build and manage adequate data infrastructure and data use 2. Tackling challenges so that the data ecosystem works better 3. Gathering and creating research, evidence and knowledge about data and the benefits of open, trustworthy data access, to inform companies and policymakers as they create data infrastructure, assets, practices and policies. If you’d like to help us advance this work, we'd love to hear from you – please get in touch at info@theodi.org

The #KingsSpeech took place today. This sets out the programme of legislation the government intends to carry out for the forthcoming Parliamentary session Today’s speech contained an ambitious 40-bill agenda and its very clear theme was that of a ‘mission-led’ government, covering 'economic stability & growth', energy, borders and crime, breaking ‘down barriers to opportunity', health, and 'national security and serving the country'. While data was not explicitly mentioned in some of these bills, it is clear that the success of the Government’s agenda will hinge on trusted, transparent, and high levels of accountability in data use. Whether it is cleaning up our waterways or improving transport, monitoring school admissions policies or evaluating community needs, high quality and open data is a necessity. The ODI stands ready to help in this mission - this will require strategic and long term investment in our country’s data and AI infrastructure and data skills. Our Global Head of Policy Resham Kotecha has written a blog about the key policies on all things #Data and #AI. Find out more. https://hubs.li/Q02GZ8gx0

The UK is a leader in open banking – the ecosystem is already worth more than £4 billion to the UK economy, attracting inward investment and creating almost 5000 skilled digital jobs across the country. We must maintain the UK’s position as a global leader in developing smart data schemes, like open banking. This legislation builds on the important work of the implementation of open banking in the UK, laying the foundations for future growth of the open banking ecosystem, and will now propel us forward towards an innovative, data-driven economy. We look forward to continuing to support the Government, regulators and others to ensure open banking goes from strength to strength as a UK success story and public good. https://lnkd.in/eVbkHseg #openbanking #smartdata #smartdatalegislation #fintechinnovation #fintech #SMEs #smartdatabill UK Parliament | HM Treasury | Department for Business and Trade | Henk Van Hulle | Marion King
