Your podcast downloads really don’t matter as much as you think they do. After producing over 100 top performing shows, these are the metrics that matter: To be sure we're on the same page: A download does NOT equal a listen. That's right, your podcast may show a number of downloads your episode has generated, but that is simply proof that a podcast app like Apple Podcasts pulled the mp3 file from your RSS feed. So it's very possible - probably, even - that a good percentage of your downloads have never resulted in a user hitting that play button. Your episode is sitting on their podcast app, unloved :( Or, that they've only listened to the first 60 seconds (for users streaming on Spotify, that's enough to count as a download that'll show up in your analytics). So your download number is good to know, but it only tells a small piece of the picture. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭: 1️⃣ Episode Consumption: How much of the episode are people listening for? 2️⃣ Engaged listeners: How many listeners are tuning in to more than 50% of an episode? 3️⃣ The qualitative stuff: What are people saying about your show, and how many listeners are emailing/DMing/sharing your show? It's better to have a small audience that is loyal and actively engaged than a large "audience" that never even hit play! Focus on keeping the listeners who really care around first and foremost.
